A quick feedback of my hdr experience with powerdvd 17.

I have a GTX1080 with a skylake CPU (so not a kabylake) and I'm running Win10 1607 (Anniversary Update). FYI Shadow Warrior 2 and RE7 are working well in 2160p hdr.

I tested hdr demo from http://demo-uhd3d.com/ and mkv files from various origin.

Both Sony demos are working fine in HDR:

  • Sony_BRAVIA_OLED_HDR.mp4

  • Sony_4K_HDR_Camp.mp4

With most others demos, like LG_Cymatic_Jazz_HLG_Astra_teststream.ts, powerdvd is crashing.

Regarding mkv files, no crash, but only few are switching in hdr mode, most of them are displayed in sdr. I checked metadata with MediaInfo Tool, all mkv are in 10bits depth so it is still a mystery for me.

I’ve noticed some differences in HEVC format profile, not sure it's revelant.

Edit: according to this article https://ngcodec.com/news/2015/11/16/fpgas-are-best-for-encoding-high-dynamic-range-hdr-content-with-hevch265 there are multiple metadata requirement for hdr.

These are missing with my mkv files:

  • Color container/primaries: BT.2020

  • Transfer function (OETF/EOTF): SMPTE ST 2084
