I want to trim a load of avi files to pick out the bits I want and reduce disk storage space while retaining the best quality for the shortened clips as I don't yet know what I want to do with them. After reading up on this topic as best I can (I am new to all this), I plan to import the files, group related clips on the timeline, trim them as necessary and then produce a new avi file in the same 720x576/50i format as the originals. Is this the best approach?

Questions I have been unable to answer which I would really appreciate guidance on:

  1. PD13 seems to offer 25Mbps as the only option for bitrate but I'm not sure what this means or what the figure is for the original which was sourced from a mini-DV tape. I believe higher is better but is higher than the original of any benefit?

  2. Why does SVRT indicate that even a single, untrimmed clip needs rendering if both in and out are avi?

  3. Will I suffer a significant loss in quality by rendering the grouped and trimmed clips as avi files?

  4. What are the pros and cons of rendering to mp2 or mp4 format?

  5. If I did choose mp2 or mp4 is there any benefit in choosing a higher resolution than the input of 720x576?

I am using PD13 on Windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron 3650 desktop.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Carl312 and thanks for response,

I understand about not being able to open a PD13 file in PD12 but that's not my main issue. I am using right click and the 'open with' command but in most cases PD13 is not available to select, only PD12 - which I didn't think I had any more since I upgraded to PD13.

I recently bought MediaSuite13 which includes PD13 (which works OK). But when I try to open any .avi, mpg or .mp4 file using the 'open with' command I get offered PD12 but not PD13 as an option. Even after pressing 'choose another app' and 'more apps' PD13 does not appear on the list of programs. PD12 opens and will handle the avi and mpg files OK but when I try to open the mp4 file I just created in PD13 it shows it as an .aac file which is silent when I play it. MediaSuite13 shows in my program list in control panel but PD12 does not. When I use 'open with' on a .pds file both PD12 & PD13 show as options.

Please can anyone explain what is going on and how I might fix it? I am using Windows10 on a Dell Inspiron desktop which came with a cut-down version of PD12 so maybe that has something to do with it.

Hi Barry,

Thank you for your reply. It was the 'produce' step that I had not deduced so I think I am now OK.

Hi,

I understand how to trim and split video clips but as far as I understand it this does not alter the source clip. Is it possible to cut pieces out of the source file (avi, mpg etc.) to make it smaller.

I am using Power Director LE 12.0.0.4405
