Well sure, but I would hope that their recommended format would get you the best results after they've processed the video.

I post a lot of photos on Facebook, and I finally saw a suggestion to upload png files rather than jpegs. Uploading a png -- which is lossless -- gets you noticeably better results than you get with a jpeg of any quality, once it's been compressed by Facebook. I would hope that a video file in their recommended format would likewise look (and sound) the best after their processing, otherwise why would they make such specific recommendations? Though perhaps their recommendations just gives them files that are easier for them to process, while producing essentially the same results. They probably use AAC audio, without necessarily compressing it, so nothing would be lost, as compared to reprocessed MP3 or whatever.

There are a few reasons why Facebook would be a convenient place to post videos, but it seems like Vimeo beckons. It's been suggested that Vegas will produce videos that come out better on Facebook, perhaps because it can generate files with the recommended format. I'll be trying that.

I'm mostly hoping that I can define an optimum proile in profile.ini. I haven't gotten into how to define a profile, and I don't know yet if I can build one to produce files in the recommended form. If anyone already has a profile like that I'd love to see that before I dive into the profile.ini file.
So, Facebook recommends:

  • H.264 video with AAC audio in MOV or MP4 format

  • An aspect ratio no larger than 1280px wide and divisible by 16px

  • A frame rate at, or below, 30fps

  • Stereo audio with a sample rate of 44,100hz

When PowerDirector 13 Produces for Facebook with the "HD Quality 1280x720" profile, it's generating a file with:

  • WMV3 video (8000Kbps) with WMA audio (320kbps) in WMV format

  • 1280x720

  • A frame rate of 29.97

  • Stereo audio with a sample rate of 48,000hz, same as the rate in the input file

and then it presumably uploads that file to Facebook.

The video certainly plays on Facebook, but it's a little blurry and the audio certainly isn't as good as the original.

Can you choose or build a profile that will get better quality out of Facebook?

(Sorry this is so spread out vertically, but this is what I get, without any double returns. Is there a way to make it more compact?)
