MTS Thumbnails in Vista
[Post New]
Has anyone figured out how to show "Snapshot Thumbnails" (my term for a little picture) when looking at a file list of MTS or MT2S files in Windows Vista (or any version of Windows I guess).

Sure would make it easier to review long folder lists of files!!?

Hi Fred -

Sorry - I don't have an answer, but I'd like one too... When I transfer clips of the Canon, it gives me the option of creating thumbnails.

That doesn't help much. It only identifies each folder of clips with a thumbnail - not each clip.

If you work it out, give us a hoy!

Cheers - Tony

I own a Sony HDR12 HD video camera and it came with an application called: Picture Motion Browser. I am sure it can be downloaded from the Sony website. It displays the m2ts files with thumbnails (even in 5, 10, 30 second increments of the clip) as well as all your photo files. It serves to organize your files by date taken, type, etc.

The best part is the files can be dragged to the PD8 Media room from this application like Windows Explorer. This way you can see (thumbnails)the clips that you need and drag them into PD8 for editing.

I hope this helps!

Thanks Kevin for the heads up with Picture Motion Browser. I am downloading a copy now but at over 200 meg it must be a hell of a browser. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

It is more than just a browser, sorry about that, it is a rather large file. It has a multitude of things you can do with it. I find it very useful...it plays the m2ts files...you can edit picture files (red eye reduction, cropping, etc..

Lets cross our fingers and hope it works for you!!

Hi Kevin,

Well it is a very difficult program to obtain. The 217 meg file I downloaded will not install. It says something about not finding anything that will use the program. Google led me to a forum that said I had to download version 1.1 first. Well after downloading version 1.1 which was over 300 meg, it installed but does not show thumbnails of m2ts videos.

I then tried to install the upgrade to version 3 and again it would not install. Thanks for the info Kevin but I guess I don't need thumbnails of my m2ts videos that much, 1/2 gig of downloads is enough or me.

Further reading on some forums seems that you really need a Sony camera and in fact different PMB for different cameras.

Cheers

Holy cow, that was quite a bit of trouble you went through to find out that you couldn't use the application!! Sorry for your trouble.... Since I am using a Sony camera, I never ran into that problem...sorry about that!

Here is a Reg edit solution that I found, use at your own risk:

Open Notepad and paste in the following text

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mts\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.m2t\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.m2ts\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11D1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"
Save the file as:

AVCHD Thumbnails.reg

Then double click the file which will run it, then accept the merge.

I also personally downloaded a codec package that resulted in thumbnails appearing in Windows Explorer for m2ts files. But Windows crashed quite frequently after that ill fated installation. So be wary of that type of solution!!

Good Luck,
Kevin

Thanks Kevin for your extra help, but I am very wary of playing with my registry. I think I will pass on the registry hack, especially when all of my m2ts videos are those I have produced with PD8 and have a name describing what they are. That being said though I am very visual and 10 seconds of video usually tells me more than a name I gave a video 2 years ago. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

A very WISE and Intelligent decision!! It was fun trying to help...and after all of that I got to know you Robert a little bit better!!

I have LOTS of questions about PD8....and am looking forward to learning more!

Happy Editing!

P.S. Maybe its time to buy a shiny new Sony HD video camera!!

Kevin

Kevin;
Thanks for the reply. I am aware that there are a multitude of products that you can use that will display thumbnails. I am sure that my Canon camera shipped with something similar (pixela imagemixer?) but it is rudimentary. Besides, I have too many Video Applications iNOW!

Just looking for the solution that will let Windows Explorer render the icons. THANKS!

Enjoy the forum!!

CyberLink MediaShow 5

Just to throw that in the works.

It displays video as a thumbnail and plays the .MTS file I have. Pretty good at cataloguing images and video.

Please see attached image. MS5 is displaying mp4's in my sample, I have tested mts and they play etc etc.

Greetings Dafydd,

Can you drag clips from the MediaShow Application to the PD8 MediaRoom? If it is possible, then that would be a great tool to sort through all your video clips for folks without Sony's PMB application.

And MediaShow is not Hardware dependent (Sony Camera Required!! that is just plain crazy!!)

Hi Kevin,
The answer to your question is YES.

I have PD8 open in my left monitor and MediaShow5 open in the right. I browse through MS5 and select from the video thumbnails (you can catalogue the MS5 layout) and then using click and drag, I dropped a video into the Media Library.

MS5, of course, allows playing of the video etc in full resolution.

The Tray selection is a let down, but I'm not bothered with that bit of info as it doesn't display the item correctly as 16:9. I'll have a chat with CyberLink on that in a while.

I just re-installed MediaShow and to answer your question Kevin, no you cannot drag the clips into PD8 media room.

One thing though when you go to import videos using the media room it will actually show you a preview of the actual video but the icon will not show an image. So the software is there to process the video it is a shame that the Media room cannot show you an image in the icon, especially if you are working in a folder with say 20 or 30 video clips. As it is you have to click on each individual icon which then shows up down the bottom of the dialogue box.

I know it is just a small thing, but it would be nice if the actual Media room icons showed up as an image.

EDIT====Dafydd I just noticed you must have been typing at the same time as me. Is there a difference between MediaShow 5 and MediaShow Expresso as I cannot drag and drop from MediaShow Expresso to the Media room in PD8

Double EDIT=====I just noticed that I would have to pay out another $25 to upgrade to MediaShow5. Sorry at this stage I don't see the value it that. Face tagging would be nice for my photos but Picassa does that now for free.

Hi Robert,
You had me perplexed when I read your post ha ha

Although I have MSExpresso build somewhere on my hard drive I didn't get around to using it.

MS5 is a delight. I'm just careful which directories I open with it at one time.

Hi Dafydd,

Yes as soon as I hit submit I saw your post and thought huh did I miss something.

It looks as though MediaShow Expresso is just for converting videos and I can use PD8 for converting any videos I need. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

In think it must have more to do with Windows 7 as I am using Vista and I just set Splashlite to open by default my m2ts videos and my explorer still does not show thumbnails of the videos only a default icon. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

I agree..I had splashlite installed on VISTA, too and no thumbnails.
Windows 7 was a fairly painless upgrade.
