Hello,

I have used PD for the last 4 years but stopped upgrading at PD14 because my computer is so old, I didn't think it was worth it. Well now I'm going to finally buy a new computer in the next 30 days and am thinking about whether to stay with PD or find something more prosumer. Below are a few things I want to be able to do.

  1. Edit anamorphic videos without the bars at the top and bottom. I just bought a Pixel 3 and am going to buy a Moondog labs anamorphic lens to go on it. Can I edit and export the footage in the proper native format?

  2. Does PD17 support ProRes 422? I have a BMPCC camera and want to import and edit the footage.

  3. Can I edit 3:4 or 9:16 footage. Essentially, 4:3 or 16:9 footage turned on its side for instagram or facebook?

Thanks!
Bex

  • you can edit but 2.35:1/21:9 isn't supported. 4:3, 16:9, 9:16 & 360 are supported.

  • no. iffy it'll import because .MOV container isn't supported. exports to 8bit 4.2.0.

Well PepsiMan I am not aware of 3:4 AR video being required for facebook or Instagram. That may be desired. I just use whatever is produced by PD. Other AR can be created or modified using available freeware utilities. The 21:9 AR stirred my interest again in May of this year with this post: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/43481.page#311654 and this one: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/76274.page#312055 .

In this post the OP wants to use an anamorphic lens on a cell phone that can captures 4k 16:9 video. The number of sensor pixels will be the same. Do not know if the OP will be capturing video in HDR. She needs to do her research. That is a good camera.

Anamorphic 21:9 3440 x 1440 resolution of gameplay video can be edited in PD17. It can be produced, and the anamorphic flag be set using a utility to display in the 21:9 AR. See the attached video. It should display as 2:39AR on a monitor using the latest VLC without the top and bottom black bars. It may display in 16:9 using an older win 7 media player. It should display correctly on newer players. The 21:9 question to me has been solved.

Need other users to test it on their PC and report other viewers that display this video properly.

Thanks for all the details! I tested your clip in 9 player/converters, and only 2 of them (VLC and VirtualDub2) showed the clip with the correct AR. My visual cue for this is whether the gun's scope was circular or oval. VLC's was circular:

In the other 7 apps (Win10's Movies & TV player, Windows Media Player and Photos app; and Cyberlink PD17, PD14, PhotoDirector 10 and MediaEspresso 6.7), all were clearly squished horizontally, like this:

The IrfanView app displays the number of pixels and aspect ratio when you draw a selection rectangle, and in the VLC screenshot, the video frame AR is 2.347:1.

In the Movie & TV Player screenshot, it's 1.773:1, which is waaay off. MediaInfo (shown in the VLC screeshot) shows the AR as 2.35:1, so I don't know why the majority of the apps show a distorted image. Maybe they all use the same codec while VLC and Vdub2 use their own.

On the other hand, none of the apps showed any black bars with the clip, so that part of the formatting seems to work universally.

I put all the full size screen captures in this OneDrive folder.

I also tried uploading the original clip to YT, and you can see that it displays correctly (the horizontal black bars only appear in the thumbnail image below, not when viewing the actual video):

    thanks Tomasc.
it was four years ago, i've created a borderless 21:9 ONCE and couldn't reproduce it consistently. didn't know at the time that it was the player i was using. hence taking down the tutorials.

past couple of days trying to recreate borderless like your saw but ran into the wall every time. MPC-HC i was using was v1.7.6.217(sep2014). downloaded newer version Media Player Classic - HC 1.8.3 and displayed borderless correctly as you've stated. usual modifications to the custom profile in the Profile.ini will do the trick even with PD10.

me, three. it's been solved four years ago but because of the now older MPC-HC, i had to settle with bordered 2.35:1 & 21:9... ^^

Thank you optodata for testing the anamorphic 21:9 video using several different players. It does seem that many players do utilize the anamorphic flag in 4:3 pixel aspect ratio video to display 16:9. There are relatively fewer players to utilize the anamorphic flag in 16:9 video to display 21:9. You have inadvertently solved the problems for all the other players by uploading and posting it to YouTube. It displays in the 16:9 YT frame. After downloading it from YT, it becomes a true 21:9 instead of being an anamorphic 21:9. It works in all players I tested with no black bars seen on the top and bottom.

Thank you PepsiMan for your work and introducing 21:9 AR videos to the PD Users. I do miss those tutorials you made. Your work is acknowledged in PDRNews Issue 3 and the links for our work and others on 21:9 is in there. Thank you again for finding more players that works in displaying 21:9 video correctly.

There are at least 5 players we all found so far that display anamorphic 21:9 video correctly. They are:
    VLC
    VirtualDub2
    Media Player Classic 1.8.3
    Div-x
    QuickTime Player 7.7.9

My own HTPC is connected to a 16:9 monitor and a 16:9 television. I will always get black bars on the top and bottom in viewing 21:9 AR video full screen from any source. There are users with 21:9 monitors that have expressed an interest in editing and then producing video with PD that can be seen without the black bars on the top and bottom. This will work if the user is using one of the five above players listed above with their 21:9 monitor. It is possible that as more people buy 21:9 monitors then newer versions of player will be updated to display these videos correctly.

Attached here is the same video download from YouTube that has been recoded to be a true 21:9 instead of being an anamorphic video that displays properly in all players without the top and bottom black bars. This should be good news for the users who have the 21:9 monitors and those who want to add an anamorphic lens to their camera.
