Hi all, long time pd user, however just upgraded to pd17 and have found my entire system is freezing while rendering H.265, even ctrl-alt-del does not work

This only happens when rendering H.265 and does not happen with any other codec, up to date windows 10 and ryzen 2700x

We don't have any details about your system or how it's configured. Please see the Read Me post at the top of the forum and post your DxDiag results to give us volunteers a better idea.

Please also screenshot or describe the profile and hardware settings on your Produce page. Lastly, some details about your source clips might be helpful. Screenshot a MediaInfo screen, or upload a short sample clip to a cloud sharing service and post the link here for others to download and test.

amd ryzen 7 2700x do not have hardware HEVC H.265 decode and encode... only way you can encode HEVC H.265 is through GPU that support HEVC H.265 decode and encode. GTX950, 960, 1050Ti etc...

My GTX 780Ti can only encode H.264, but PD can still produce to H.265 with the CPU. It's just slower than with a compatible GPU, and the HW option would not be available on jamesd1981's computer, either.

^^. that's it. JamesD1981 should disable HA and try it that way! untick all HA if it's checked.

got problems with gom and vlc players. there isn't any hevc decode n encode software in your DxDiag.txt.
Download K-Lite Codec Pack and install to see if this will help.

Quote pd17

your PD17 is v2211(???) Updates PowerDirector 17 to build 2126 or there is a beta [PDR17] GM3 2224 Beta Patch Now Available. .
GTX 970 is capable of hardware encoding hevc h.265 only. if you've tried beta patch and still don't work then for the GTX 970 driver stick with 411.xx drivers or version that optodata is using 411.70.

good luck.

I agree with PepsiMan. Your source clips are Quicktime (Apple) and K-Lite may help make sure your system (and PD) are able to decode them properly as well.

Also, you stated you have a Ryzen 2700x but your DxDiag shows a GTX 970. Is this the same system, or did you swap out GPUs?

I will install k-lite and beta update and see if it solves the problem

My pd17 is build 2126

The source clips are from a gopro hero 6

My cpu is a ryzen 7 2700x, my graphics card is the gtx 970

Installing k-lite and the beta patch has not helped.

I have also tried various videos from different devices and various resolutions, all result the same when using h.264 it renders fine, when using h.265 it freezes, occasionaly if i trim to really short like only a few seconds long it will render

With the beta patch installed, do you have GPU encoder access restored? Does it make any difference when you produce with the Fast video rendering technology: box checked on the Produce screen?

Also your screenshot shows a custom H.265 profile shown. What happens if you try a standard profile? Please check for CPU-only and GPU producing.

trying a standard profile made no difference, however i can select hardware encoder which does render the video i assume via my gpu as while it renders temperature rises.

Although this is a kind of workaround, i never use hardware encoder due to the dip in quality, surely my 2700x should be more than capable of software encoding h.265 ?

i am rather puzzled i just built this system to have the most up to date hardware for editing my videos

OK. It's actually great news that you can use your GTX 970 to produce to H.265!

Obviously, your CPU should be to do that as well, but the fact that only the GPU works is a big clue. I doubt that the issue has anything to do with your processor's power, but more likely something in how PD interfaces to it or the supporting hardware.

You've laid a lot of real groundwork here, and now I think it's time to get Cyberlink tech support involved. Be sure to reference this thread in your problem description, and post back here with the ticket number. Doing that seems to help speed things along.

jamesd1981, it really sounds like you may have AVC H.264 source footage and encoding to H.265 and it fails/freezes with CPU encoding. For such path, you may want to try disabling hardware decoding in the pref > hardware acceleration area. From experience, this may allow your CPU to encode the H.265 without the freeze, worth a try.

Thanks to all for your help so far.

i have now spent ages testing various version of pd with the same settings and various source files

pd 14 through to 17 will encode h.265 no problem on my lower spec intel skylake system, this freezing problem appears to only be happening on my new ryzen system

it`s the first AMD system i have wasted my money on for years, i will be getting rid of this trash and never giving amd the time of day again, clearly they are always going to be junk, put it down to an expensive lesson and punt it to a gamer or something and stick to my well tried and tested recipe of Gigabyte boards and intel cpu`s

Try Jeff's suggestion just above your last post, and let Cyberlink work on it. They may have a setting for you to adjust, or they may have to come up with a patch, but either way you should be able to get work done with using the GTX 1070 for H.265 (or either that or CPU for H.264) while you're waiting.

I already had hardware encoding disabled after testing encoding with the gpu, i am not trying to encode with hardware cpu.

I have always found best quality renders came from software encode which i have never had any problem with until this AMD system
