I already had hardware encoding disabled after testing encoding with the gpu, i am not trying to encode with hardware cpu.

I have always found best quality renders came from software encode which i have never had any problem with until this AMD system

i agree with optodata, too.
it's a PD17 hiccup. i've been using PD and amd systems for years. open a tech support ticket.

I didn't suggest to enable hardware encoding, I said to disable hardware decoding, a big difference.

Decoding is also disabled if this screenshot is the right area

I have tried pd versions 14 through to 17 and all do the same, so i assume it can`t just be pd17 ?

I hope you don't give up. You should get really good quality when producing H.265 with the GPU, and if you do end up with a section of any particular clip that you're not happy with, you could then produce that clip to H.264 using your CPU, right? Seems to me like that's something worth trying.

I think all of this info and the fact that your issue isn't limited to PD17 will help tech support figure out what's going on. Maybe there's even a Windows or BIOS/UEFI setting that none of us thought of that can resolve this?

hmmm.
i've been using it for almost 8 years on amd cpu and nvidia gpu.
pd14u is on windows 7 pro sp1a 64bit with amd 8370e n gtx 1060, no problems at all rendering hevc h.265 videos.

i'm wondering now how about other forum members who has Ryzen 7 2700X systems??? don't be afraid to chip in...

This now has me wondering about clock speed. Is your rig overclocked? Can you drop the speed down a bit, or maybe change the profile in the tweaking app to something like normal/balanced/standard rather than max performance?

Thanks Pepsi, Opto & Jeff for all your help

Opto your last post was on the money, i did not even think of that as the cpu was not specifically overclocked, but was running an out the box turbo boost which takes it from 3.7ghz to 4.2ghz.

After i disabled all boosts and set the cpu to stock 3.7ghz, i can finally render a full length H.265 video.

However i now see in ryzen master 2 sections are hitting 100% usage and the system is clocking the cpu speed down as low as 3.2ghz, i can certainly live with this, but would like to figure out why this is happening and why the turbo boost had the effect of freezing the whole system, i always monitor my temps during render and they just touched 70c so should have been no where near thermal throttle ?

Quote ... and the system is clocking the cpu speed down as low as 3.2ghz,... just touched 70c so should have been no where near thermal throttle ?

that is the sign of thermal throttling. when my fx-8370e thermal throttles, cpu freq goes down as low as 1.4GHz then back to 4.3GHz...

i read that 70°C(158°F) is the temperature limit for the AMD. continued use at this temp or higher will shorten the life of the CPU and the motherboard. bringing down that temp(70°C) to 40°C-50°C ideal op temp, i would look for an alternate cpu cooling fan or a cooling system and a cooling fan for the VRMs as well...

I'm really glad I thought to ask that question!

Overclocking is actually a very complex process. It's not just increasing the clock speed, it's a very delicate balancing act of adjusting CPU voltages vs power dissipation alongside precise tweaking of the inter/intra CPU timing. When pushed to its limits, a CPU can easily hit a "race condition" (where the expected result of a process isn't ready when the next physical block has to act) and completely lock up the processor.

That can even happen without going near the thermal limit, but it's much more likely to happen when you're also running close to the max operating temp. That's apparently what was happening when your 2700x was rendering to H.265.

Thermal protection is there for the long haul, and like PepsiMan said, lowered clock speeds are a clear sign that that's occurring. I imagine you can actually get by just fine the way things are, but if you decide to push your CPU harder (while now knowing what happens when you've pushed too far ), I agree that an add-on liquid cooler upgrade would be helpful.
