For issue 2. Are you sure that you are editing in "timeline view". "Storyboard view" creates a thumbnail for each clip.

Looking at the screenshot you sent, it looks as if it is "timeline view" but your symptoms describe a selection of the "storyboard" setting. You can check this by looking to the far left on top of the time timeline and hover your mouse over the far left buttons Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Issue 3

I would guess that you are editing a fairly long clip, perhaps a whole project when you begin. In this case your project is called t900 blue ray speaker. Am I right?

When you put this project on the timeline and make a split the name is automatically transferred to the split. I suppose you could shorten the project name and that might help, but the splits in your screenshot are only about 10 seconds long, so a long name take up all the room Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Your screenshot definitely looks like Storyboard view. I think it's fair to say that most if not all of us use Timeline view. With that you only get a thumbnail at the beginning and end of each clip. You also have the ability to keyframe effects such as varying the audio amplitude at different points within a clip.

Regarding your difficulty with transitions you need to be aware that they can be applied in 3 ways. You can place one at the beginning of a clip, at the end of a clip or between clips. If you do the latter the clips will be overlapped by an amount equal to the length of the transition. This is necessary because if, for example, you want to dissolve from one clip to the next then during the dissolve there must be elements of both clips on screen.

If you want to fade through black one way this can be done is to place a fade transition at the end of one clip and another at the beginning of the following clip. In this case the clips will not be overlapped.

Working in timeline view expand the timeline to allow yourself to easily see where the transition is going. Drag the transition to the end of a clip and you will see it snap to the end. If you continue dragging you can position it equally over the boundary between the clips and when you release the mouse button you should see the second clip move back to become overlapped with the first with the transition positioned over the overlapped area.
