How to add transitions to the OVERLAY only, NOT to the main video

Hi, is there a way to add a slow blur to the 2nd track, and not to the first? I would like a slow blur to bring in a PIP but not make the top main video have the blur in it. Thanks.

A 'blur' is a transition effect.... listed in the transitions 'room'. Is this what you are talking about?

Transitions are things applied between two items - two video clips, two images, or an image and a clip.

If you put a image or a clip in track 1... and then another clip or image in track two,.... and only apply a transition effect ( a blur perhaps) to the beginning of the image or clip in track two..... does this do what yo are looking for?

Just tried that in PD13 ( as this is what I have) and the blur, while its only applied to the track 2 clip, still blurs out the clip in track 1 before blurring INTO the clip on track two.

So, I'm not sure how to achieve what you want - and am still not sure what you want.

Yes CS, you are correct that the blur still blurs out track one.
So, I need to find a way to "softly" bring in a logo on track two, and then "softly" let it exit the video a short time later.
Any ideas? The client told me it is to "hard" to have it appear and then not appear..... he wants the logo to transition in and transition out.... same with titles.

On the Logo in the timeline...
Click the image to hilite it.
Click Modify button when it appears.
Scroll down to the bottom of that menu and you'll see ENABLE FADES.
Click FADE in and FADE out. Time of fades can be altered, you will see now in the timeline your image will have lines that control the opacity, adjust as necessary by pulling the dots on that line.
Done.

However, the fade in fade out for titles is grayed out and I cannot adjust it, I have attached a photo. What am i doing wrong? It worked for the logo, but not the title.

Hi, Angela123!

Barry's version is one method, quite valid, here's another:

1) Position your PiP item onto Video Track 2 at the point at which you want it to appear(having set the size of the PiP in relation to the image/video on Track 1).

2) Just ahead of the clip on Track 2, select a colour board and, with modify, chroma-key it so it becomes invisible. set its length to about six seconds and move it up to the beginning of the PiP clip.

3) Copy the chroma-keyed colour board(Ctrl+C) then paste it in at the end of your PiP.

4) Enter the Transitions room and select your blur effect, lay it across the start of, and again at the end of the PiP(between the chroma-keyed colour board and the clip) and, in Modify, set your transition's time(between 3 and 5 seconds should give good effect) then set the transition behaviour to "cross". Apply these settings at each end.

And there you have it! This can be done in PD14, and possibly also in versions of PD going back to, perhaps Version 9 or 10 whereas it was not possible in PD8(or it was possible but with a fixted 2-second transition time).

This method will only apply to the PiP track, and I believe that's what you want.

Oops! Almost forgot....

Cheers!

Neil.

Er...ahhh sorry 'bout that, chief...er... Angela(channeling Maxwell Smart there! ha-ha)

Okay, to get a colour board, look for the bar across the top of your media room(where your clips go before dragging them to the timeline) Where it says "Media Content", click on the downward arrow and the options will open, colour boards are the second option from the top. There's also backgrounds, but these are for other uses. Just pick any one you want to use, though I would recommend black, or white. They are the two I generally use.

Cheers!

Neil.

How come the fade in and fade out in titles is grayed out, I attached a photo. Seems the place to do this with titles, am I wrong?

Okay, this is my second attempt to explain this, on my first attempt, when I clicked "submit" it went "ker-blooey"!

Here's how titles are added:

1) At the point on your video where you want to insert your title, from the Title Room(T), choose a template and lay it on the track immediately below Video Track 2. then left-click on it to enter the Title Designer workspace. Here you can type in your title, position it on the screen, set the font size and style - and colour!

2) Once you've done all that, while still in Title Designer, at Top-left you'll see the tab for "Effects", you have Starting Effects and Ending Effects, each in their own groupings. Fade In is in the Starting group, with Fade Out in the Ending group, along with a jaw-dropping array of other effects in there as well. It's just a matter of clicking on the one you want(in your case, you wanted "Fade")

Cheers!

Even though Angela has resolved her immediate issue by using fades rather than blur transitions, I thought I'd post this...

Some transitions, when applied only to a resized PiP Object (whether it's a clip or an image) DO affect the whole screen, including the background video. FACT.

In PDR, it's been that way for a good while & was discussed here - https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/38560.page#198884

The video I posted then (2014) still applies to PDR14 & I still can't explain it:

Neil - inserting a colour board then applying chroma key to it results in NOTHING. The process you suggested above works only for particular transitions & NOT for a blur transition.

In the timeline setup below, with blur transitions applied, I got exactly the same result as Angela did in her original post. The whole screen is blurred - not just the PiP Object.

Attachment for Neil (Maxwell Smart) laughing

Cheers - Tony

Yeah, you really demonstrate the flaws in what should be completely reliable at this stage of PowerDirector. I admit I focused on easy fades rather than the blur Angela asked for. Just now I placed a giant PIP squirrel on a rooftop to represent the logo. I used Blur FX directly on the squirrel, it only affected the giant tree-dwelling rodent. It can be keyframed to go from blur-clear-blur. Add the fade in/out MODIFY I discussed, Blam, finito. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)
