Image stabilization problem!

You know what it's like, out with your camera, you rush to get the shot you can see developing in front of you. No time to sort out the tripod, so hand held is the way to go! The result is a pleasant enough shot but maybe it's too shaky.
I have at least one slightly shaky video clip I wanted to use, to finish off a sequence. Having just upgraded to PD13, I thought I'd try out the new and enhanced image stabilization in the Fix / Enhance tools.
It is not very good. In fact it's as bad as in PD12
I've tried the different settings from ...
1 Stabilizer , from #1 through to #50
2 Stabilizer + Fix Rotational Camera Shake (this creates even more rotational shake, making the video clip look very jittery!)
3 Use enhance stabilizer

After all the hype, I was expecting this tool to produce something a bit more stable but, if anything, it's made the video clip appear worse

Maybe I'm using it incorrectly ( I'm sure I'm not ) but you guys in the forum have helped me before so here I am, cap in hand, asking if anyone can offer some help in this matter?

I'm on the verge of uninstalling PD13, to reinstall it but thought I'd make a cup of coffee to simmer down first

Has anyone else used this tool and found an improvement?

Cheers all

Hello,

I used the improved stabilizer coupled with the shiver of rotation of the camera and I am very satisfied with it; much better than with PD 12. I made a comparison with " Mercalli 3 " from Prodad and the result(profit) is similar. Hi All

Thanks borgus1 I'm sure Barry also mentions another program that he also uses for image stabilization which is excellent. I just want to edit and make pictures, walk my dog and go fishing.

Thanks for the reply PapidoFrance, that's interesting, I'm pleased that your stabilization has worked well for you.
I wish I could figure out why mine doesn't work

Kyle,

I'll second the motion that the "enhanced" stabilizer is an improvement overall. In fact with some images it's very good. However, I have found some instances (I can't point out why) where it's actually worse. Win 10, i7

Hi HDedit I agree with your findings Having now tried the Enhanced Stabilizer on a few wobbly shots, I also find varying degrees of picture quality from a slight improvement to the subject being stable but the rest of the image is "stretched" at various corners. Not pleasent at all Hopefully it will improve ...................................................

The PD12 stabilizer starts by cropping a "safe" area around. That area is proportional with the amount of stabilization selected.
Is the PD13 trying to keep image not-cropped? I can't check, I un-installed the trial.

PD13 uses similar method. In enhanced mode it appears to take more samples to improve the image quality. And as a result the rendering takes more than 4 times longer. Win 10, i7

Hi,
I'm also using the improved stabilizer. To me, it works better than the ordinary, but the preview is teribly stammered. The Picture stops but the sound continues. Also the timer stops. After a while preview jumps to the actual Position.
A stunning > 2.5 GB RAM is used (not a Problem).

Thank you for help.

I have the same result as you Heinz (with a much lower spec PC - nothing like yours).

What is interesting is the info box next to the "Use enhanced stabilizer" check-box. It said "...it is recommended that you switch to a non-real time preview or render a preview for the applied range".

The non-realtime part I understand but I'm not sure how to render a preview for the applied range? (edit: Found out how to do the render preview now - thanks to youtube )

Also I found that it will not render a title into the clip that is being stabilized as expected. In my case I have a bit of text that shows up in the middle of the clip. It looks like image stabilizer treats this as 3 diff sections.
First the section up to the title gets stabilized – then the section with the title – then the last section after the title. If you have some really shaky footage like I used then you see the “jumps” (looks like a cut) at these points in the produced video (This is not visible in the render preview - only when I produce the output).
My guess is I would have to produce stabilized clips first and then pull it back into the timeline to add the title.
