I have issues with Power Director crashing when I go to produce a video.
I have emaile all the information to Dafydd BUT I wanted to add it here in case other people are having the same issues OR have come up with a solution.

The information in this posting are guides for members.

PowerDirector Version build PD7.00.1714

Clips 1. mpg2 3:10 184mb
2. mpg2 3:25;07 79.5mb
3. wmv 03:24;20 36.2mb
4. 2 mp3 made goldwave at 192mbps ripped from video 1 and 3.

Loaded clips clips in timeline as follows

Clip # Time

3 0:00 to 02.02
fade of 1:01
2 0:00 to 15:19
fade 2:00
3 14:22 – 43.15
fade 1:10
1 29:20=36:01
face 1:00
2 46 :01 – 0 :08 :19
fade 2:00
1 55 :04 – 01 :05 :06
fade 2:00
2 01 :14 :22 – 01 :24 :06
fade 2:00
3 01 :23 :02 – 01 :32 :22
fade 2:00
2 01:29:22 –01:44:29
fade 2:00
1 01:31:20 – 01:45:00
fade 2:00
3 01 :55 :10 – 02 :06 :06
fade 1 :15
1 01 :52 :12 – 01 :58 :27
fade 1 :15
2 02 :08 :21 – 02 :31 :10
fade 2:00
1 02 :17:28 – 02 :29 :12
fade 2:00
2 02 :38 :24 – 02 :51 :22
fade 2:00
1 02 :38 :10 – 02 :58 :25
fade 2:00
2 03 :08 :06 – 03 :21 :11

In addition to these clips

Mp3 of clip 2 runs along the bottom the first bit is audible as is the last bit, the main audio is
Audio from clip1

There are two PIPs 1 from clip 2 02:30:02 – 02:40:07 at about 02:30:15 in the montage

2 from clip 3 03:10:16 – 03:24:20 at about03:10:15 in the montage

both PIPs are full screen transparency about 48 fade in and out (aspect ratio kept)

Once the video clips are in line and synced the video clips are muted. Audio is running along the bottom
Once I’m happy with this I go to produce
Create a File
Mpeg2
My custom profile is 720x480 DVD NTSC 8000kbs CBR mpeg audio 192 kbps
Speed Quality 6
Click next
Choose a name for the file and just saved to desktop. I allowed view during production (but I also tried this without it on)

I click on start rendering
Specs are I have almost 64g left after production

Click on start rendering and immediately it comes up with PowerDirector has encountered a problem and needs to close. (before it would hang for about 30seconds) it doesn’t do that since the uninstall.

I uninstalled and reinstalled as part of the test.
NOW I have processed the exact same compilation with PD6 on my laptop. Which is also XP. I have Vista but the time it takes to load ONE clip into the timeline is ridiculous seconds (Xp) to minutes (Vista) Vista is going bye bye really soon.
No problems with processing the file on laptop. Same dimensions same everything, other than a different computer and a different PD version.

To test, as suggested.
I put the video in three times and produced mpeg default 352x240 1500-3500 kbps prob vbr audio 256

Same three clips went to Custom 1 720x480 8000kbps cbr 192 audio
And it errored (just as it did before)

Look forward to your response.

ETA Seems that the constant bit rate, as opposed to variable is the problem. I redid the acquariumx3 with the higher quality vid but vbr and it processed, with cbr it doesn't

I don't know if this has anything to do with the problems that I have encountered in burning discs, but I found that the trigger for the failures was an XP security update, dated June 6th. When I uninstalled that update I was able to burn to disc (unless I tried to add a customised menu!!). I uninstalled PD, re-booted, uninstalled the XP update, re-booted, re-installed PD, re-booted and then was able to burn OK. Seeking wisdom - finding fluff - but wise fluff!

Dafydd, super. I will wait to see if you can come up with anything. Thank you.

Hall I don't have automatic updates running on my PC so I'm pretty certain that this isn't what is affecting it.

As I noted at some point (not sure if it was here or just in my second email to Dafydd it seems to be an issue with the bitrate. I can produce the test (3 aquariums) at variable bit rate but not at constant.

Thank you though, because that information might be helpful to someone else with the issue that you solved.

Just an update as V and I have been exchanging quite a few emails. The data being provided by V is comprehensive and is based upon the instructional guides located at:
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/2405.page
Subject: PowerDirector - information we request and tasks to carry out.

It appears that V has a corrupted PD7 installation and a thorough reinstall is needed. [I'm waiting for confirmation on this matter]. In Capture settings the Profile change option was not available - a clue that something was remiss.

For PDR installation issue, clean GUID (Microsoft cleanup tool+ clean up PowerDirector Registry ) can solve most of cases.

Clean up tool
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. Run the program and then install PD.
Use the program if you have installation problems

I have responded to Dafydd, but just want to update. I have uninstalled and reinstalled PD7 and have actually done a full clean up of registry on this computer (XP). I am missing the option to change my capture settings on PD7. My PD6 works fine, in fact i reinstalled it and all is well. I have not been able to get the Profile button to work on PD7 only on PD6.
(just an update)

Edited to say I still have not gotten it to work (sorry for the misunderstanding)

Added comments: At this stage I still have no button to change my capture settings, but a different build has allowed me to choose cbr as a production option and it doesn't crash anymore. Still trying ot figure out why I can't change capture settings. (That's next)
