Changing "MY VIDEOS" and removing unwanted "text"

Firs, I have never, ever, worked with a software package that is so unser-unfriendly as this product. I mean, the software itself is setup in such a way to purposely make it impossible to use it without a manual - and then, the manual is written in a manner that leaves about 60% of the software completely unexplained!

The first question I have, in fact discovered less than 2 minutes after trying to use the product the first time, and which remains unanswered despite reading the manual 3 times and attempting to use the software for over 28 hours, is HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE STUPID "MY VIDEOS" label that is everywhere? No only should this be easy to do, it should be obvious. And, it should be clearly documented in the user manual.

Second, how do you delete these stupid "Item 1", "Item 2", and "Item 3" things? They are completely worthless from what I can se. The manual doesn't even come close to explaining their purposes, especially since you CANNOT CHANGE THE TEXT!!!!

And, to add insult to all of that injury, the only "tutorials" I can find outside of Cyberlink (meaning ones that actually take more than 3 minutes to go into details) are for 5 or 6 versions ago.

If I wasn't working on someone else's project (evaluating the software before they fork over the cash), I'd tell 'em to forget it. Unfortunately (for me), they're stuck on this at this point because their "best friends son's girlfriend loves it." If it's impossible to use without 3 degrees, a wigi-board, and 12 experts in close attendance, what good is it?

Perhaps a screen shot of what you see would be helpful. I don't know where you are seeing those items.

Perhaps this post should be in Power DIRECTOR rather than Power DVD? .

I agree with you. If the software built in the Mac OS could burn Blu-ray I would have never switched.

Interesting that you agree that a piece of software that was never designed to burn ANY DVD/blu ray/AVCHD was not as good as a piece of MAC software.

Perhaps you should look at the products sold by Cyberlink and what they can do. PwerDVD is a DVD and video PLAYER and not much else !

Here are 3 images. The first is the template - I've circled the red I can't change or remove. I can't see what Item 3 is for (root), nor can I see any properties that explain what it is for.

The second is what the template "turns into" when previewing. Now, I spent almost two days trying to change the title from "My Videos" to anything else. Of course, today when I open the project to take screen shots, it has "Season 1" (darvit!). I have no idea where, or how, that was changed. It was definitely "My Video" when I saved it because that was just before I submitted this thread original post.

The third is the Menu Structure; which is now showing "Season 1" as the root. But, I still can't change the Root or sub menu titles. The last time I was in, at one point it did let me change the sub menu name - but I can't remember what I did. Even at that time, the same action wouldn't allow me to change the Root title - only the sub-menu. Now, despite it showing "Season 1" in this screen, I can't get it to let me change either value again. >Right Click< does nothing, and >Single Left Click< doesn't enter Rename mode (this method works in some of the other screens).

I also can't see how to change the root menu value (Item 2) "Scenes" to, for instance, display "Episodes" instead. Nor can I see how to make it allow for more than 4 videos per sub-menu, or how to add additional "Item" values on the root menu to allow for jumping immediately to a specific "group" of videos.

For instance, there are 8 groups of "My Videos" with 4 episodes each in this project. Ignoring the fact that each is titled "My Video", it's stupid to have to scroll through each one sequentially (> icon) rather than having a "Episode 1-4", "Episode 5-8", etc on the Root menu to jump immediately to the desired episode.

I know how to add text to the template. When when that is previewed, they disappear the same way "Item 3" does in the examples above.

What this client is asking me to show her is how to make a BluRay disk of the TV show CD's and DVD's she has so she can reduce the number of disks. We expected it to be a simple, click, click, type a little, and burn the BluRay. But, without detailed instructions and/or more the hyper-speed tutorials, the instructions that exist are so cursory as to be worthless.

If you can tell me where there are detailed instructions on this, or a tutorial (not the 3 minute hyper-speed version on Cyberlink), I can see if I can work it out.

STEVEK, what do you mean "wasn't designed to burn ANY ..."? I thought that was specifically what it (PowerDirector) was designed for? The PowerDirector 12 site has "comprehensive tools for high-quality video productions - all with easy-to-use features and fastest 64-bit video editing" as their description. Video production would seem to include menu's (even if "easy to use features is an outright lie). Wouldn't the fact that the function used to "finish" a project is "Create Disk" confirm that???

Am I wrong in interpreting the description this way? If PowerDirector isn't for video production, what software would be?

Your posts are in the PowerDVD part of the forum. Not Power Director part of the forum.

Since some people specialize, you may want to do some copying and pasting in that forum to get the best answers from the best experts. .

It should have been in PowerDirector 12 forum - that was where I clicked on "New Topic".

THank you for moving it.

If you are reading this, you are already there!

Sorry that it took so long to address your issue. I'll look at it now. WHere did you get that menu template? What is the name. I don;t see it ion my list. Is it something you downloaded from the Director Zone?

Something to remember . A title is a complete movie. A chapter is a point in that title. When a title finishes playing it typically goes back to the menu (unless you change it. When a chapter finishes playing, the next chapter starts. When that one is done, it goes on to the next chapter. When they are all done, then the DVD goes to the menu nless you change the navigation.

It is not a good idea to put more titles on a menu. The "buttons" are larger than they look and if they end up overlapping, they will not work properly.

I'm going to look more closely at your issues and will post back if I have more answers.

I have looked at your issue and , fi that is a custom or DZ Menu, that is maybe where the issue is.

The two attached screen shots of a standard title should answer 2 of the questions. Try remaking you project with one of the standard menus.

Try working with one of the standard menus and if you still have issues, come back and ask again. I don;t know if I have answered all the questions and how many of them are related to the menu you are using.

I downloaded it from the DirectorZone. The two that were "default" on the trial version were "Cinematic", which wouldn't do anything, and "DVD Menu 1225".

DVD Menu 1225 was giving me the same error, so I downloaded the other one (My Video - DVD - Page 4 5th format in DZ). It was the first "basic" one I found at the time.

I've been trying to get a new, from scratch, menu to work, with similar results. I'll try the two you have above to see what I can do with them.

In the mean time, is there a way to change what "Item 2" resolves into ("Scenes")? For one thing, "Scenes" implies what you say Chapters are. For another, the project I'm working on is to make a DVD of TV Show episodes - so I'd like it to say "Episodes".

Thank you for your help.

Oops. I thought hey were menu formats.

1) Your first image (rename) isn't what I can't get to work. I'm trying to alter the title that appears at the top of the Root menu's. It's "default" is "My Videos".

Most of the time, that's what it stays. In my 11/10 post, it somehow got changed to "Season 1", but I can't figure out how!

I also can't change the resolved "My Videos" value in the Chapter menu (in my 11/10 post, it stayed "My Video" and was the 1st level below "Season 1" in the Menu Structure.

Well, that was stupid - I'm not sure of me, or if it's a stupid program design.

I can't edit the values in the template when setting it up. It has to be "Item 1", "Item 2", ..., "My Videos", etc.

However, after I've selected it (I'm in the Content tab, NOT the Menu Preferences, I can change the values there.

And, equally unfortunate, any changes to the template defaults ("My Videos", "Scenes", "Play", etc) at that point crashes PD12.

I'm going to have to tell her this just isn't a tool for casual use. Even if I can eventually get it to work, it's too temperamental and there is no way she's going to be able to do it herself.

Thanks for you help.

I agree, it can be frustrating.

There's loads of tutorials for PD on Youtube about creating DVDs

Here's a link to the PDtoots Channel, it might help

Whatever you think of the program design (& I'm not a great supporter of PD's Create Disc module), it's not hard to change the words once you've selected a menu. I agree with Neil - it certainly isn't a user-friendly interface

The two you've mentioned are:
Film 638 menue - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/4388953
DVD Menue 1225 - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131579378

There's nothing wrong with the menus in question that would cause an issue.

Take a look at this hastily constructed, low-res, screen capture and you'll see how easy it is - http://youtu.be/VSOEGMSjx6k

Cheers - Tony

in my understanding, there are 2 concepts for disc authoring in PowerDirector.

1. Menu Designer is used for creating "menu template", not current project, so what you make in that is a template, not the final result of the disc. That's why you see the object names with default wording like item1~3 and "My Videos"

2. Create Disc page has many controls for current project you are editing like removing opening video, playback mode settings, etc. So you have to change the "My Videos" here, not in Menu Designer.

For example, if PowerDirector allows me to change the "My Videos" to "Halloween Party 2013" in Menu Designer then save it, which means it becomes the default wording of the menu template, that does not make sense.

I had the same issue with the "My Videos" text being ornery and not editable in the "modify" section. This to me seemed odd that it isn't globally editable or removable in the custom menu modification area.

When I went back into the main screen and clicked on "Menu Preferences", then the Root and menus. I was then able to click on the "My Videos" in each of those sub-screens, and the cursor appeared inside the editable area of "My Videos". To remove it, I replaced the "My Videos" with a SPACE and it disappeared. If you just remove all the text it defaults to "Enter Text here" which is worse. So now it is still there, but not there, if you know what I mean. Doing a preview showed that it has been removed.

It would be preferable to be able to remove the item entirely while creating the template, but at least there is a way to make it invisible.

Hi,

I've had plenty of experience dealing with the 'Create Disc' module.

If I'm creating a disc with multiple PD projects I usually:

1. Import the projects first in 'Create Disc' -> 'Content'. I usually have 4 or 5 projects to import;
2. Go to 'Meny Preferences' and select the theme I want;
3. Go through each of the menu and sub-menu pages getting rid of annoying words, moving text etc.

My projects tend to have a lot of chapters, due to them being family videos. Once you have selected a menu theme, there are many chapter pages to go through in the scenes sub-menu. It is a major pain having to rename each page from 'My Videos' to, in my case, 'Scenes' as well as moving text into the correct position etc.

I feel your pain!

I have been having my own problems and been getting help in another area of the forums. What I did about the 'My Video' problem was to grab it and move it off of the page completely. I then put _my_ title in that spot, as it looked like a good spot, design-wise and in the saved template that name stayed there. :
