Quote: to PD. PD14 does not take advantage of SLI or Crossfire, yes, great for gamers but this is a PD user forum. Discussed previously here,

Didn't know that, thanks.

My programmer friends say that doing multi-GPU development is a bear. I wonder if Elements or Final Cut do it today? Not that I want to spend that kinda money for a casual hobby.

Rendering speed for video has been a problem since we started doing video on computers

Personally speaking I don't find rendering speed a problem. My system renders pretty much in real time or less and although it's well specced, its not 'bleeding edge'. It's a long time since I left my computer running overnight.

Having said that, I'm glad I broke away from rendering on a laptop. My take on it now is that it is an activity for desktops. If you're travelling with a laptop it should have the biggest HDD you can get to store the footage until you can get home and edit it smile.

Agree.

The pros use rendering farms of servers for CGI, etc

Which does not help the OP

Provlima - I think you can see the general consensus is that laptops are not ideal for editing. If you have to use a laptop and need 4k editing it can be done. Here is a list of laptops for editing similar to Steve's but 4k editing is pushing the limits.

I think a reality check is in order here. I'm advocating a well specified desktop PC. Neither you nor I are pros I suspect.
