Bertie,- and others

you have NIS and so do I.
I checked if PDR9.exe has access; it has- and has always had.
Still, I have had NO ads.

(I do not have auto login to dir.zone on startup, and I don't upload to YT via PD)

You all seem to have ads, I don't. ??

Just something.

Nina

What build of PDR9 do you have?

Did you instal over PDR, or remove the previous version?

I find all this very odd and time wasting!

But at least I no longer get the ads.

I tried unchecking auto sign in and thought that worked, but it didn't. Sorry,

Quote: Are they really that annoying ???

We should probably let this topic die (because nothing will change), but...

Annoying is the least of it.
What is unacceptable ("if" my theory is correct), is that Cyberlink is feeding a streaming flash video or Power Point type of presentation, via an internet connection, and playing their advertising presentation on my PD9 screen, using my computer’s resources to do so. And this is happening when I want "all" my computer’s resources to be devoted to the task of editing, burning, producing, etc.

Just as CL (who pays for this forum), does not want, and will not allow me to advertise or post links to a competing product (via an internet connection). So also do I not want CL (via an internet connection), to stream any media files (advertising or not), to my computer without my consent.
I mean... What’s good for the Goose, is good for the Gander. Right?

But then again, maybe we all need to take a gander at the license agreement that we clicked “I Agree” on, when we installed our PD. Perhaps there is verbiage in there somewhere, stating that by agreeing to the terms of the license, one also agree to allow CL access to our computers (if an internet connection is found), for the purposes of streaming advertisement presentations to our computer’s PD9 screens.

"Are they really that annoying?" (as Pat C asked). No, not really. This is indeed the least of the issues that has been associated with PD9. But I would prefer that CL did not stream any files or media presentations to my computer, period. Or at least give me an option to “Opt Out” from allowing CL access to my computer every time I simply open my PD9.
Yes, I can disconnect my Ethernet cable, or find a setting in my firewall.
But when I purchase my trusted neighbor’s car, I don’t expect him to keep a set of keys, so he can have access and take the old Buick out for a spin every now and then when he feels like it.

I’m not a tech guy, so if I’m wrong about all this, I’d love to be shown the flaw in my proffered logic. Maybe I’m just missing, or not correctly understanding something here. Anyone, please feel free to shame me with facts, if I'm way off here.

I ignore them, to the best of my ability, but they could cushion it a little with TIPS or something. As it is, I get the impression that CL is a sales organization using media-creation software as a pitch vehicle.
To expand on the car analogy, if I buy a new car, I don't expect the salesman to be in the backseat yelling at me to buy another one overandoverandover.
As for "least of it's problems", I actually think (gulp) I love 9 since the last patch. Can't wait to see what the next patch does, if there is one. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Topic most likely to fade away soon, and that's ok, I guess.

I have no other explanation other than the ads you got "free", but not asked to get (?)
must have been a gift in patches I havn't installed.
I have the .....was it 2316?- and then, without uninstalling, patch 2330.
However, my small,"consumer"laptop has the latest patch as an experiment.
It was installed directly upon the first build- and, there's NO ads there either.....
and there shouldn't be. I would find it disturbing when I work,
and somehow it's just not right.

1Nina;
Very interesting....can you try this:
Click on the word POWERDIRECTOR in the program. Do you have ads in the "About" window that pops-up?

I just ignore them, mostly! However, the little "pop-up" ad that suggests that I upgrade to PD9...when I already HAVE PD9 is just ridiculous.

I suspect CL will not look on this kindly -
Please note - I have no intention of trying it, nor do I recommend it, the experiment was done for research purposes only, no money has changed hands, no commercial benefit/offset/reciprocal arrangement/hidden subsidy or honour has been received, discussed or intimated. My mobile phone has not been hacked .

This is a very "quick and dirty procedure" with absolutely no finesse. I have not tested it in all circumstances so....
Done at your own risk, I haven't tested it much but for those who really, really hate the ads, it may lower your blood pressure. As such, there may be a medical rationale for trying it.

The adverts appear to be called by file EVO.xml.

This file apparently has to exist - PD "rebuilds" it on startup if it is deleted/renamed.

This .xml file contains the pathways and URLs for the adverts.

Since the file cannot be deleted, the contents must then be altered either in notepad or an xml editor to prevent the URL's being available.

In some modules the advert is then replaced by the Director's Chair image - you can, of course modify this to suit your own taste - by altering the source file in an image editor.
In other modules - I haven't spent time looking in detail - a blank navigation error window is presented.

EVO.xml locations (on my systems)
Win7 64bit
C:\ProgramData\CyberLink\EvoParser\PowerDirector\9.0

XP 32 bit
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\CyberLink\EvoParser\PowerDirector\9.0

Some of these folders are normally set as hidden.

Done at your own risk, I haven't tested it much but for those who really, really hate the ads, it may lower your blood pressure.

Well, I guess it is a statement to the good for Cyberlink. So few problems exist in the program that people have time to worry about little pictures in the production interface..LOL

Fred,

no adverts in the "about"- window, just director's chair.

PS: I have the "EvoParser.dll".

Hey Adrian,

If you try it and it works.... send me a copy of your fix.... or send me the .dll file and I will replace mine.

Or we could all just uninstall Power Director and never use or purchase it again....

Big Brother PD is watching your computer...

Nina,
You do not have any ads in Powerdirector because you have Norton by Symantec blocking internet access to Powerdirector. Carl312: Windows 10 64-bit 8 GB RAM,AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 GHz,ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB,240GB SSD,two 1TB HDs.

If I just right click my network connection icon and disable it before I start PD9, no adverts when I render or produce....

Remember, you do not "own" the software, you just have a license to run it.... that's how they get you.... I was going to download the end users agreement if I could find it to see if it had a section about them being able to rob me of my MUCH NEEDED resources just to run their resource hog software. That may by why some people with lower end computers cant get rendered jobs because they are having to watch a "video slide show" at the same time taking their nominal resources.... the same reason I never preview while rendering....

Hi people,
I was wondering how much longer this thread will "hog" the top spot of the forum. Oh darn, now I've raised it again

Adverts have been previously mentioned in another thread here on the forum a good while ago (I think Tony's linked to it) and workarounds provided. I don't see the adverts as a big deal breaker for a competent computer user to block these incoming communications. I've done that in the past for many of the reasons given above. Nowadays, I'm not bothered by them as much... worn down perhaps

Ok, with all that's written, each to his/her own and do what you want on your PC's. I'm off to do some editing and then more videoing

Have a great day.

Hwyl
Dafydd

I would like some way to turn them off.... so far nothing does it... It may be robbing some of my resources when I render/produce.... I could care less what the advert says, don't look at them anyway, a waste of time on my machine, like so many others, they only drive me away from buying other CL products.... not to mention the unauthorized invasion of my computer.. it's like getting a porn site pop up during a Google search As Nipsy Russel would have said...I been violated!
