I am currently using a Sony HDR CX350 Camcorder to film at 1900X1080 17Mbps. The files produced are .mts and they play flawlessly on my PC, Laptop and on my PS3 (both streamed and directly from USB or HD).

Hi Rhodri,

When you say "streamed", I hope your PS3 is not connected wireless? I had problems streaming HD (1920 x 1080) to my PS3 from a Synology NAS while it was playing smootly on my LED TV. The reason was because my PS3 was not wired on my network. Once I plugged it in instead of using the wireless, it was playing smootly.

So, it might by only that, we never know. I just tried to help.

Hi all,

I've read this thread with interest. The Sony camera you have is from the 2010 range and is SVRT compatible, unlike the 2011 range! I've no experience with playing files via USB or streaming on a PS3 because all my footage ends up on blu-ray and the PS3 has bever let me down when playing back discs with SVRT footage on h.264 encoded discs.

Can I suggest you goto 'Edit' -> 'Preferences' -> 'Produce' and ensure the 'allow SVRT....' box is ticked and then re-run your tests with SVRT on.

For your footage I'd select h.264 with profile AVCHD 1920x1080.

Hi again

Your MPEGing - if there's such a word is what I had to do a camera or so ago.

The camera was a Sony HDR SR10, and no matter what AVCHD file type I produced it resulted in blurred edges etc.

I then used MPEG and choose the BD1920x1080 profile and it worked flawlessly.

It just seems odd that PD8 could produce a faultless AVCHD file and PD9 couldn't on my computers.

As was suggested if your using the wireless mode try using a cable - it must be HDMI to get the true HD look. Happing editing

Hi again,

Dynamite: I too initially thought it was a streaming issue, but the original footage streamed without problem. Since then I have tried all test footage from USB stiick or direct from PS3 HD.

Andrew: I will check my settings again and try what you've recommended. Do you suggest I keep the Bit Rate as default 15.5mbps and 'Top Field First' and 25fps?

Neil: I'll try the BD1920 x 1080 profile too.

The SVRT function produces fantastic results on the PC playback but doesn't work on PS3.

All non-SVRT renders are playable on PS3 but flawed on PS3 and PC.

Sorry for requesting so much assistance, but this issue is driving me nuts!

Cheers,

Hi Rhodri

What I can do in a few hours is to upload your original 17sec clip in the AVCHD render/produced format that I made in PD8 which played and look stunning on my 47 inch LED/LCD 1920x1080 TV.

This will 'narrow' the problem down to:

Your computer

Your PD9

Your PSP

Your TV/leads

I'll post this clip in approx 5 hours due to work commitments

Hi Rhodri

Attached is your original 17 sec clip produced using a custom AVCHD 1920x1080 17mbps rendered/produced with SVRT ticked and using PD8

Try downloading this and watching - as I said before it plays perfectly on my TV set up.

I note with interest that there is another patch for PD9 - 2930.

Try downloading and installing this as well.

Good luck

The new update has a PS3 profile that may help. Look in the produce mode under Devices and Sony. __________________________________

Hi again!!

Andrew: I appreciate your suggestion - unfortunately it made no difference.

Jaime-esque: Thanks for letting me know about the new PS3 profile. I tried producing a clip using this setting and the results were pretty good. The picture was clear with crisp edges to subjects & no motion blur, however, the footage is a little bit jerky. Could this be because the frame rate is now listed as 29fps in the properites and not 25fps? I cannot see a way to edit this variable.

Neil: Thanks for the PD8 rendered sample - it was perfect!! Really clear, crisp & smooth.

I also tried re-rendering the footage with SVRT in PD9 with the new patch installed - back to ridiculously choppy again!
I followed your directions to create a file using the MPEG BD1920x1080 profile - again a lot of motion blurand not great.

I guess from this trouble shooting I can only conclude that PD9 altering the m2ts file in some way that PD8 didn't, when SVRT is selected.

I'm really appreciative of everyone's help with my problem. I hope the tech team can figure it out and fix in a future patch.

Kind regards,

Rhodri

Shw mae Rhodri,
Let's take a different tack with the approach here.

For a start the 29.97 output file would cause a jerkiness in the produced media. I didn't replicate it my end. I dropped the attempt and I possibly could have continued with multiple clips in the track. The PS3 template creates a 29.97fps regardless of whether you have PAL 25fps selected in Produce.

When a PS3 mp4 is created a .THM file is also made. I don't know the purpose of this file format or the file. Perhaps you can enlighten me? I haven't a PS3.

OK, the different tack. I use .mp4 all the time. That's the format my camera records to, while another records to .mov. These are QuickTime formats which PD9 can create and an editor can tweak custom templates.
1. Place your video into the track
2. select Produce
3. select Mpeg-4
4. select Best Quality
5. select the "+"
6. In the dialogue popup enter a Profile name for the template
7. Enter a description - let's come back to this in a minute.
8. Go to the Video tab
9 Resolution - chose one for your NEW PS3 template
10. Ensure the frame rate is 25
11. select progressive
12. Leave at "Main File"
13 Entropy coding - I select CABAC
14. Average bitrate... the PS3 template was quite low. set yours about 13000, the lowest.
15. Advanced - I set mine to HQ on the slider but for PS3 you may want to lower it.
16. I have Use deblocking checked.
17. Audio tab
18. Audio compression rate - you may want to play around with this to see what's best for you. PS3 was 128, so that should do.
19. Back to the Profile name tab and alter the description to note the selections you've made.
20. Click OK
21. You will then be ready to render the footage to your own PS3 template.
22. Check back on the quality and tweak the custom template by selecting the "pencil" icon.

OK, we're done - let me know how you get on.

In the test I carried out the finished file was 25fps.

Shw mae Rhodri,
Now you should have carried out all the above and been reasonably successful BUT...

The frame sizes available in a customised profile template do not match those you have for the PS3. The PS3 template frame size is 480x720 (it's the one that creates to a 29.97fps).

You MUST carry out the above Profile creation before this next bit.

CLOSE PD9 before carrying out the following

1. Go to: C:\Users\YOUR-PC-NAME-HERE\AppData\Roaming\CyberLink\PowerDirector\9.0

2. Select Profile.ini and create a copy (this is your fall back) then open the original in Notepad - make sure when you select "Open with" you uncheck the "Always".

3. Select Format>Wordwrap - this is to allow you to view the information on screen.

4. You are looking for 1280 and 720 in the text.
Change the 1280 to 480 and the 720 to 270.
You will need to do this for the description and the Profile instruction.

5. See highlighted section.

&
<Class>MPEG-4 AVC
<Name>PSP-Rhodri Jones
<Description>
Frame size = 480x270.

Bitrate = 13000kbps

&&

6. Now go back to Format and uncheck Word Wrap.

7. Select save and close the file.

8. Now OPEN PD9 and test with a file and see if you can select the altered custom profile and produce with it.

You should be able to produce a 25fps PS3 video file - 480x270.

Let me know how you get on.

Shw mae Rhodri,

You could of course always use "copy'n'paste" on the quoted section and put that into the Profile.ini. Hey, that would be too easy

Hi Dafydd,

Thank you for your very detailed instructions.

I created a Custom Profile as you suggested. I selected the resolution as 1920x1080 and the bit rate I selected was 16000. I replicate all your other settings.

The footage produced was 25fps but it suffered from a huge amount of motion blur again - see attached screen shot.

I haven't yet had a chance to change the 'Profile.ini' file. I wanted to know the purpose of that because the resolution I want is 1920x1080 and not 480x270?

I might upload a clip that was rendered using SVRT to see if other PS3 users can test to see if they have the same issues as me.

My aim is edit any footage that I capture and render it in a format that maintains the quality of the original and is playable on the PC and PS3.

I think that with Neil and your help I've come to the conclusion that there is an issue with PD9 rendering footage from my Sony HDR-CX350. The only decent footage rendered is using the SVRT setting which produces excellent results during PC playback but is unwatchable on a PS3. However, when rendered using PD8 - it is perfect on both - o there must be some difference in the way that PD9 is 'finalising' the produced footage when compared with PD8.

Cheers,

Rhodri

Hi all,

I am hoping that a fellow PS3 owner would be kind enough to download my attached video to see how well it plays on their unit.

When it plays on mine it is very, very jerky and impossible to watch. I appreciate any feedback or comments.

I got the same result, very jerky. I looked up the specifications on my older Playstation 3 and it is apparently NTSC only. Newer versions do both. I don't know if that effects our tests or not. It did play fine on the computer. __________________________________

Thanks for doing that. I have a PAL version (Australia) and I've tried coding in both PAL and NTSC with no difference in result.

Shw mae Rhodri,
Sorry, I don't think I can be of much use to you with your PS3 query and quality issue for your footage.

The template frame size I gave for the PS3, was the maximum (I believe) PD9 offered.
