Playstation 3 Playback/Rendering Issue

Hi,

I hope someone can help me with the prblem I've been having with PD9. I am very new to PD9 so I appreciate any input or assistance offered.

I am currently using a Sony HDR CX350 Camcorder to film at 1900X1080 17Mbps. The files produced are .mts and they play flawlessly on my PC, Laptop and on my PS3 (both streamed and directly from USB or HD).

However, when I pass the footage through PD9 the resulting .m2ts file is competely un-watchable on the PS3 as it stutters constantly and is very, very 'choppy'. The files play fine and look great on the Pc and laptop.

When editing producing the file I have tried pretty much every combination of variables in order to improve the quality of the playback on the PS3 - but unfortunately to no avail! Even when SVRT is selected and I am told that no -recoding is necessary, the file is still not watchable on the PS3

The best file produced so far is an MP4 but even that has a huge amount of ghosting or motion blur which again is at an unacceptable level.

Any help or asstistance from some more experienced experts would be greatly appreciated as I have run out of ideas!!

Many thanks and kind regards,

Rhodri

Hi Rhodri

Welcome to the forum

In addition to Dafydd's request your camera files are probably identical to mine - see my signature.

Here's what I do when producing my projects to watch from a hard drive/USB stick:

1. In settings uncheck 'shadow edit files' and 'enable hardware decoding'

2. Produce your project using a custom H.264 AVC profile - mine reads AVCHD 1920x1080 with 17mbps/24mbps depending on camera used OR use the default AVCHD 1920x1080 or AVCHD 1920x1080 (24 Mbps) setting.

3. If SVRT is checked - uncheck it - the project may take longer - but the results can be dramatically different.

4. In the output folder select the name and location of your file.

5. Press start

The time it takes varies due to computer specs, size of project and effects/transitions used.

Happing editing

Best Regards

Please update your Video/GPU driver, I see there is "no date" for your current driver . Please update by visiting the AMD/ATI website and not through Windows.

PD9 is particularly picky when it comes to having the latest gpu driver.

After you've checked out what Neil has suggested and updated the gpu, please then retest - the stuttering should be sorted.

The latest version of PD9 is 2701 full build. For those who have applied the patch it is 2702. Please check to see if you're running the latest build. Note: Keep your eyes peeled for a newer updating patch which should be out very soon.

Thanks Dafydd and Neil for your help.

Dafydd: I updated my drivers with the latest version of Catalyst Control Centre from the ATI website and I also downloaded the latest PD9 Patch. When I run a DxDiag there is still no date listed for the GPU drivers and it's still the same as the previous version.

Neil: I tried your recommendations with mixed results. I tried a number of different settings based on your suggestions and here are my findings:

Settings 1: Profile: AVCHD 1920 x 1080 - all settings default - NO SVRT

PS3 Playback: Plays reasonably well with significant motion blurr or ghosting
PC PLayback: As PS3

Settings 2: Profile: AVCHD 1920 x 1080 - all settings default - SVRT Selected

PS3: Unwatchable - extremely choppy
PC: Great - smooth and no ghosting

Settings 3: Profile: AVCHD 1920 x 1080p - all settings default

PS3: Pretty good playbabck (best of th lot) but still not perfectly smooth
PC: As PS3

When viewing 'properties' from file created from 'Settings 3' I noticed that it is now 23fps not 25fps of original file.

I also tried a number of variations on the above default settings e.g. increasing bit rate to 17Mbps but none of these files could be played on PS3.

As you can imagine I am pretty confused now. I thought that the SVRT function was supposed to eliminate the need for rendering the video, therefore if the produced video is unchanged, shouldn't it play as clearly as the original?!

Any further help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Rhodri

Shw mae Rhodri,

Please can you attach a sample file from the " Sony HDR CX350 Camcorder to film at 1900X1080 17Mbps". 5 to 10 seconds, unedited and attached to your reply. select: http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/reply/0/17572.page
Please supply a selection of samples matching the capability of the camera. They'll be used to test on our system and see what results we achieve and how best to assist you.

Currently the new range of Sony cameras do have problems in PD9 - re the SVRT function. The next patch may correct the situation.

Once we have the samples we can try and mimic the issue and see if we can get a suitable output file for you.

Diolch yn fawr Dafydd,

Please find attached the smallest un-edited suitable sample that I had, I'm sorry but it is a bit longer than you requested in that it's about 17seconds.

Good luck!

Hi again,

Yesterday I tried re-coding some .m2ts files using tsMuxeR. The original camcorder files imported without issue. However all files generated using PD9 came up with the error message as seen on the attached screenshot.

Hi Rhodri

I downloaded your clip and:

1. I watched the 'raw' clip on a USB stick on a full HD 1920x1080 LED TV.

Result: Video was perfect - sharp and crisp.

2. Using PD 9 I imported clip and produced the clip using the default AVCHD 1920x1080 profile with SVRT ticked - it took 3 seconds to render.

Result: Video showed minor blur to edges and the dark areas were mildly pixulated.

3. Using PD 9 I imported clip and produced the clip using the default AVCHD 1920x1080 profile with SVRT NOT ticked - it took 60 secs to render.

Result: Video showed minor blur to edges and the dark areas were mildly pixulated.

I then used PD8

1. Using the default AVCHD 1920x1080 profile with SVRT ticked - it took 3 seconds to render.

Result: Video was perfect - sharp and crisp.

2. Using the default AVCHD 1920x1080 profile with SVRT NOT ticked - it took 58 secs to render.

Result: Video showed minor blur to edges and the dark areas were mildly pixulated.

Conclusion

PD8 produced/rendered the video clip with the default AVCHD 1920x1080 profile with SVRT ticked perfectly. With SVRT unticked the result was not that good.

PD9 couldn't produce this video file to an adequate quality with SVRT ticked or unticked.I not sure why PD9 doesn't like this video file.

Andrew - Wales, UK is a guru with the Sony file types and Powerdirector - may I suggest you send him a PM.

Sorry I can't be of further help. Happing editing

Hi Neil,

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to help me!

I thought I was going mad! I have been having alot of trouble with my laptop too - it pretty much crashes every time I play an HD file, so I started thinking that it might be related to that. I have managed to negotiate a full refund from Dell.

Thanks for your suggestion, I will try getting hold of Andrew.

Cheers again,

Shw mae Rhodri,
I have placed your video into PD9 and rendered it to m2ts using SVRT, using Hardware acceleration, no Fast video Tech and to Mpeg2.
I then placed the video into PD9 as shown in the image with all video on screen in Full HD resolution in Preview, displayed in staggered formation to examine and compare each as it played - or the slider moved. Full HD preview is a real drain on resources. I had no pixelation and i could not see any perceivable edge variations in comparing clips.
I then transferred all the video to a memory stick and played the video on TV. No pixelations and I again could not see any edge differences. The video clip doesn't make this task particularly easy as the edged areas are mottled in the original as well.

The most obvious difference in my system from both yours and Neil's is the brand of GPU. Mine's a Nvidia, and an "older" one which has proved very reliable, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250, but it doesn't have the full use of DirectX11. Neil's computer is more powerful than mine.

I don't have a PS3 so cant check that function.

For me the render is excellent - sorry not to be of more assistance. I will refer this thread to CyberLink for them to check out and ask why you and Neil are both experiencing the same results.

Hi Dafydd,

Thanks for your efforts. I am very grateful.

Seeing as my laptop is soon to be returned to Dell, I will uninstall PD9 and install it on my PC which has an NVIDIA 8880GT Card, so i'll be interesting to see if there's any difference. I will keep you posted!

Hi again,

I have installed PD9 on my Desktop PC and there seems to be little difference in the results obtained. I am still unable to view the files that have been rendered by SVRT on my PS3. The best settings I have come up with so far have been 1920x1080 PAL Default and No Fast Render. The files produced play pretty well on both PC and PS3. However there is quite considerable motion blur when during movement of subjects or camera. Please see attached screen shot. This blurring is not present on the original file.
If could eliminate this 'motion blur' I would be quite happy!

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Rhodri

Shw mae Rhodri,
That "blur" you've displayed (image) so reminds me of interlaced footage as opposed to progressive, I used MediaInfo to further look at the media file.

The interlaced scan type is reported but that could be misrepresented by MediaInfo as previously discussed on the forum.

1. What are your selections on your camera please - choices for video capture?
2. As this is "new" 2011 sony footage which PD9 has previously had problems with, we'll have to wait for the patch.
3. I cant see or view that problem... darn I'll have to blame the new verifocal specs, but Neil does.

I have referred the thread and maybe support will come back to me soon, likely to wait for the new patch and then ask you to retest.

Hwyl

Hi Dafydd,

The setting I use on my camcorder is: AVCHD 17M FH - this is 1920 x 1080. There is also an AVCHD 24M FX mode and 2 other lower quality modes. I do not have any other variables that I can alter within the camcorder (as far as I'm aware)

I just produced a sample clip using the settings: MPEG-2, Profile Name/Quality: (HD) MPEG-2, 1080i and the results were pretty good on PC and PS3 in that there was no motion blur. The only issue was that there was quite a bit of pixelation.

Hi Rhodri,

When you say "streamed", I hope your PS3 is not connected wireless? I had problems streaming HD (1920 x 1080) to my PS3 from a Synology NAS while it was playing smootly on my LED TV. The reason was because my PS3 was not wired on my network. Once I plugged it in instead of using the wireless, it was playing smootly.

So, it might by only that, we never know. I just tried to help.
