Ok - since Adrian tried it on his computer, and I hadn't by my first post,
I had to try. Open PD9, go right to import the file, asked if convert- "yes" - "ok" -
and no problems occured. Did it again, no problems - played fine in timeline.

Hi Nina, Yes I too can do that. It is with the recorded tv files that I am having problems with. See attached files which is the progress of trying to import these files. As I can only attach 3 files the last one is just the progress message window that shows you the progress of the conversion. In that message window it only lists an audio file and no video files. After completion of conversion it disappears and there is no file in the Library window.. thanks Mark

Hi again, Mark

(just ignore this if it's too dumb)

So- you can convert/import/play the small sample file, but not your large ones?

Have you tried to convert/import/play a small file recorded from TV?
(just activating common sense here, no knowledge, really....)

Hi Nina

You might be a mind reader!! I was just wondering the same after viewing those files and wondered the same. I'll give it a try to record various lengths and see what happens. Thanks Nina.

Just throwing something out there, you said you are recording off your cable TV not free to air TV. Could it be protected somehow to stop pirating. My youtube channel====> http://www.youtube.com/user/relate2?feature=mhsn

Hi Robert, Thanks for your thoughts. I too had thought that. What I recorded, which was through a tv turner card in my pc to which is a fixed my cable tv, was the Royal Wedding of William and Kate on the PBS channel which was I believe a feed from the BBC in the U.K. as the narration is all a uk accent. At the moment I am recoding a 2 hr piece of the same channel, one to see it it might be copyrighted and two to see if it is as Nina suggested too long a recording /too big a file. Hang in there and watch this space as they say. After it has finished abouts 8:45 est I will try to import it and see what happens and post the results. Thanks Mark

Hi Nina,

sorry, but not good news. I recorded 15 to 20 mins off 6 different tv channels and none of them would import. Seems we are back to square one.
Any fresh thought would be appreciated any one!
Thanks

Hi Barry,

I'm very much a newbie Barry so you will have to explain to me what a FFdShow is.

Many thanks

The question was to more senior members who are watching this, but to sum it up, FFdShow is a well-known collection of codecs for playing and converting audio/video streams.
Most (if not all) of us have it installed, and I am wondering if you are having problems due to a lack of a proper codec.
The WTV sample on many of our computers is probably a little different than what you are producing/capturing, so it has limited use as an example of what you are doing.
Please ATTACH a dxdiag file and that will tell us exactly what your computer is, OS, and what's included for codecs.

PART B
Create a Diagnostic File
Win7 operating system
Start icon > Click
In the Search box type in > dxdiag
On your keyboard select > Enter (return)
Select > save the information
save as ****DxDiag.txt
Replace the **** with your name so the file can be identified easily.
Example: johnsmithDxDiag.txt

XP and earlier:
Go to > Start
Select > Run
Type in > Dxdiag
Click > OK
Select > save the information
save as ****DxDiag.txt
Replace the **** with your name so the file can be identified easily.
Example: johnsmithDxDiag.txt
A diagnostic file is used by PowerDirector Technical Support to analyze your PC set up.

I am not an expert at reading these DXDIAG files, but nothing jumps out at me. I was hoping that a more qualified person might notice something. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Well, thanks all the same Barry.
Was editing from my Panasonic HDC-HS700 last night and the program hung up on me twice! Once when I went to record the edited file and then when I tried to burn it to DVD. Resorted to the software included with the camera and it worked fine. C.L.PD9 tech guys supposed to be taking it to the next level to find me an answer but beginning to wonder. Mark

You can always convert your files before importing them. Plenty of free converters out there.
As for tech support's spotty record...I come here for help and information.
Now then, PD hanging, just twice? Cool.

"editing from my Panasonic HDC-HS700 "?
Any files you are editing should be on your main hard-drive, not a camera, or external USB drive. This may be part of the hanging, but...? HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Mark, hi

Barry has tried to call on some people to have a look at your problem(s):

The question was to more senior members who are watching this

I am not an expert at reading these DXDIAG files, but nothing jumps out at me. I was hoping that a more qualified person might notice something.

and I will second him. Your Dxdiag has been posted and downloaded 15 times as I write this.
Let's hope a few of those in here that usually ask for dxdiags' and look at them to find solutions
will be able to give you some qualified comments.

Although I have looked at a few dxdiags over the past months, I am not at all qualified to make
correct comments on tech specs. What I can do, is to tell you what I noticed in your diag.
You have a lot in there (!)- and "heavy duty" on a couple of other video software.
I have experience from only one of them- a few years back, and what I can tell you is that
it ruled my computer. I got rid of it, and never will go near it again.
The program might have changed since then.
Only hung twice?

A question or two; when you have these, what are you looking for in PD, and might it be an idea to
un-install and clean out at least one of the others?

ha en hyggelig dag,
vennlig hilsen

Nina

Right at the beginning of this thread a request was made for a sample wtv file from Mark. I think Mark stated he didn't know how to load an attachment. Barry jumped in and gave a location for a sample on the W7 set up and that file was tested by a number of editors who posted their results (Adrian, super input).

I see a diagnostic file was provided, excellent. However the issue here is the importation/conversion of a wtv file which is produced/captured by Mark. Unless the requested wtv sample file is provided then this thread is going to continue going nowhere.

Jaime, asked the right question.

Mark, please zip compress a wtv media file and attach it to your next post please - maximum of 10 seconds, unedited and direct from source.

Members can then check the source file and not rely upon another which may or may not reproduce your current issue.

I imported your file, it asked for a conversion to MPG2, I gave it the go-ahead. The file aspect is 4:3, although it's properties state 720x480. Works fine.
