I'd skip XP if I were you and go directly to Windows 7 64bit. Win7 handles hd video much better than XP. On the hardware front I'd recommend the fastest quad core processor you can afford, at least 4gigs of memory and a current generation nvidia or ati graphics card. Anything around 100 bucks should get you sufficient speed. Nothing less than a 9600GT on the nvidia side or a 4670 on the ati side.
