Have reinstalled the patch twice now, same result. Suppose I could just remove all of PowerDirector and start over from scratch, but wanted to check first whether anyone else is having this problem.

Complete uninstall of PDR11 apply activation key, then install patch.

If you go back and "play" or check on your subtitles in any way, this can disrupt the setting and revert it back to default.
