The detailed issue description

Watching any blu ray movie is interupted with video pausing/freezing, video chunky pixel, and/or video freeze with audio stopping and then video and audio starts where audio left off, video freeze then fast forward to match up with audio. This can happen ANYWHERE. I have seen it during previews, the movie, and the movie extras.
I have tried replacing hardware. I am just short 2 items now of having 2 complete machines. I have tried multiple fresh installs with different combinations of the hardware and they all do this.
Fresh install windows 7 64 bit with every hardware change and most software changes.
I can get all windows updates or i can skip them it does not mater.
I can install SATA drivers or leave them windows 7 default it does not mater. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=18859&lang=eng
Install audio.
Install video.
I can install latest directx or i can skip it there is no difference. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0cef8180-e94a-4f56-b157-5ab8109cb4f5
I can install updates to the included Visual C++ runtime that comes with powerdvd or i can skip them it does not mater.
I can run powerdvd in cinema mode inside media center or normal mode outside media center it does not mater.
During all of my testing just when i think i gots it working i get a really nice playback that i can never reproduce again. I can play the same movie 3 times in a row and the problems are always in different spots.
I can play all different movies or even alternating movies and it still happens.
The disc are clean. There are no scratches the human eye can see. There are no holes in the reflective layer that light can shine through.
I have even monitored for heat and cpu issues. The cpu usuage barely hits a 3% max when playing back blu ray movies and sometimes even goes to 0%. The process list shows powerdvd only using 0-3% and usually the only other item is system idle process.
The video card and cpu are not getting hot enough to drop cycles. I have even forced all fans full bore and there was even less heat but it did not make the problems go away. The cpu is like 42C idle and less than 50c when watching blu ray. The video card is 50c idle and less than 65c when watching blu ray. I have monitored locally and remotely with software.
I have disabled the moovielive stuff and other services that are installed and started by powerdvd. I have noticed once powerdvd is loaded the one executable that is loaded like a service is active and does not exit with the software.
These are bare bones installs with media center configured and not configured.
I have even disconected the HDMI and used a DVI -> VGA adapter to the TV VGA input or a REAL CRT monitor. It still would do this annoying random behavior with blu ray.
All blu ray play flawless on a ps3 using the same optical spdif cable/input and hdmi cable/input!
Why can i not watch a blu ray movie without some form of playback issue?

I got this from my tech support request, but can anyone explain why they did not read the part where i described that i am using a single display or did not unzip my attachment to find the files are requesting?

I have replied to them informing them i was using single display and that the files they were requesting were in the original posted zip file and that they just needed to unzip it.

Dear Larry,

Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.

I understand your concern related with PowerDVD 9 Ultra.

I wish to inform you that you can PowerDVD 9 Ultra for Blu-ray playback however, for BD playback you can single monitor and extended monitor display.

PowerDVD 9 Ultra can not work on dual display however, for playback you need to use single monitor.

However, while playback of BD disc if you are facing any issue then please provide me below mentioned information:

1. DxDiag.txt log file

DxDiag.txt: You can use the steps that follow to create this file:

1. Start --> All Programs --> Accessories -->Run (Windows Vista)

2. Type in DxDiag and press Enter or click OK, this will open the DirectX diagnostic tool.

3. Click on the Save All Information Button (save this file to your windows desktop and name it DxDiag.txt).

2. CollectUserInfo.cab : Steps to generate "CollectUserInfo.cab":

Note: Make sure you logged in as an "Administrator".

Step 1:

Download the tool and double click CLCollectUserInfo.zip (given below) to unzip files. The winzip will create the folder name, CLCollectUserInfo.

Tool Download:

http://download.cyberlink.com/ftpdload/trial/pdvd/tool/CLCollectUserInfo.zip

Step 2:

Select the folder, CLCollectUserInfo, and double click "CollectUserInfo.exe"

Step3:

Click on "Collect" button.

Step 4:

Once the process finish, click the "Cancel "button to close the program.

Step 5:

Provide send "CollectUserInfo.cab" to us. (The CollectUserInfo.cab will be stored on "CLCollectUserInfo" folder)

After getting the information I am able to assist you further.

Please feel free to contact us back for any further clarification or for any assistance related to CyberLink Products. Use the below mentioned link to get back to us for your further queries:

Well i see i have stumped folks with all the details...
Even worse this is the latest TS reply....
The zip file attached to this posting is the same file now attached 2x to the TS request.

Dear Larry,

Thank you for writing back.

I understand your concern related with BD playback in PowerDVD.

In regard to your issue, I request you to please send us the DxDiag.txt file.

DxDiag.txt: You can use the steps that follow to create this file:

I have kindly replied 2x to my original TS request. The first I attached the first 3 files of 6 that were in the original single zip file. The second i attached the last 3 files of 6 that were in the original zip file.

I wanted to include everything the first time instead of waiting for a reply several days later asking for a different file. I can see now even if you get complete information and detail the staff seem to be only following teleprompters and are not allowed to go outside the box.

I am sooo tired of the support system used by cyberlink. I wish my software worked so i wouldn't have to even use it. All i want is a complete the complete HTPC so i dont have multiple hardware, but i guess i choose the wrong software to use for my blu ray support.

Sorry for the ranting but just sick and tired of doing my own tech support work.

Hi Larry,

Just for kicks, have you tried installing and running Slysofts ANYDVD HD?

This other topic was having very similar playback problem with pixelation and other visiual problems. He installed ANYDVD HD and his issue of Avatar playback was resolved. This might be a short term fix.
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/11415.page

http://www.slysoft.com/en/anydvdhd.html

It's worth a try. What do you have to lose?

Regards,

Kevin

Yea i was reading about HDCP issues and people said to try the Slysofts ANYDVD HD, but it did not get rid of the problems i was encountering I ended up proving my problem was not HDCP related with even a standard monitor with ANYDVD HD installed and a fresh without it installed. The same problems kept appearing.

I checked out the forum post you marked and its interesting you mention the hardware acceleration. I will check again, but when i play blu rays it doesn't use that function on the nvidia drivers. You can't turn it on and off during blu ray playback.

You can turn it on and off during DVD playback. For my DVD playback I have it off and use the True Theater with CUDA turned on for now. Not the AUTO mode cause I like how the DVDs look this way.

I will take a look at this again.

Got to love the TS at Cyberlink... I am uncertain how i want to approach this one.

I have so far confirmed that NVIDIA is still only offering GEFORCE 197.45 WHQL drivers as listed in my original posting.
I guess i could look and see what BETA drivers they have to offer that might be newer, but i am not thrilled about that right now.

It is clear to me they did not read fully my complaint and just gave a me generic answer back.

Sad to say item 1 i do NOT have AV installed and I uncertain if you can turn off windows defender in windows 7. The only time i have seen windows defender disable is when another AV is active. I will take a look again.

Item 2 pisses me off because i can't stress enough that i have formated and installed my OS so many times now and installed fresh copies of PowerDVD only to be greated with the same crappy issues. Again i feel as if they did not read my original posting.

Item 3 dang I thought i gave a wonderful list already in the original posting ugggggg!

Item 4 i never see a freakin error message or i would have taken a snapshot of it for you!

item 5 I do not have anything else installed 3rd party for watching movies or videos.

Dear Larry,

Thank you for writing back.

I wish to inform you that you are using Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT Manufacturer: NVIDIA Chip type: GeForce 9800 GT and the drivers on your computer is 4/3/2010, I suggest you to please log-on to nVidia website and install the latest drivers for your card.

However, after updating the drivers if you face any issue then I request you to please use the below mentioned steps and provide us the information:

1) Turn off the anti virus.

2) Re-install the PowerDVD on your computer.

3) However, if the issue persists then let us know the "Region Code" of the BD Disc / title.

4) Snap shot of the error message.

To take a screen shot, please press Print Screen key on your keyboard when this error comes.

Then go to Start>programs>Accessories>Paint. Paste the screen capture there by pressing Ctrl+V or alt+Edit+Paste. Save the file and send to us for analysis.

5) If you have any other playback software installed on your computer then please let us know the name of the software.

After getting the information I can escalate this issue to RD.

Please feel free to contact us back for any further clarification or for any assistance related to CyberLink Products. Use the below mentioned link to get back to us for your further queries:

Hi Larry,

Your experience is pretty typical when it comes to technical support problems. I did notice that Cyberlink Michael seems to be back in the picture, so he might be able to offer some insight into your issue.

I wish I knew more details of how to solve or look for the problem, but aside from the things that I had mentioned in the other post, I am stumped.

Maybe try sending a PM directly to Cyberlink Michael would be a good step. He knows quite a bit about how to correct problems.

Good Luck!

Kevin

I tried to be gentle and polite back to my TS helper...

Yes I know I am using a NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT and the 4/3/2010 are the latest drivers offered by NVIDIA for my hardware.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_197.45_whql.html
I might be able to find a BETA driver, but this should work just fine for playback without a BETA driver.

Item 1)
I already said I do NOT have an AV package installed. I will scour the net to see if Windows 7 allows users to disable Defender, but keep in mind defender is for malware and spyware and not a full fledged AV.

Item 2)
I can't count how many times I have even done a fresh formatted and installed for both the OS and PowerDVD over again, but i can inform you have i had to already get a new key because i have used my original key too many times. This is a fresh format and install of the OS and powerdvd. I have kept the 3rd party products to an absoulte minumum as my testing has shown me that powerDVD is picky when other items are installed. I have now also seen a difference in performance even with hardware difference since I am even using a different motherboard right now.

Item 3)
There is a wonderful list of Blu Ray titles in the original post. I know that not all of these titles have specified Region codes, but i gave all the information i could see on the package and disc. ALL of these disc had 1 or more problems during playback that never produced a true ERROR window that i could snapshot.

Item 4)
I wish there was an error that popped on the screen, but there is NOT! The error is seen in the video playback quality with anything from chunky pixels, to sound and video issues. I can NOT take a snapshot of this activity or even record it since those features are turned off for Blu Rays.

Item 5)
I have purposedly not installed other 3rd party software or CODECS for playback. Windows 7 Enterprise does include media center and i suppose that could be considered a playback software, but only for DVDS. There is no built in blu ray playback in media center.

I really want to get this fixed once and for all.

Thanks Cap'n Kevin for letting me know that Cyberlink Michael was back. I have dropped him a private message asking him to visit this post and give his thoughts.

I am quicky getting the feeling that PowerDVD and NVIDIA do not play well. I am half tempted to buy my first ATI card to prove my theory, but here i go again tossing more $$$ i dont have for a solution to this. I would really rather toss money at a HDMI AVR and newer Geforce that can use the AUDIO HDMI CODEC. The sad part is then i have to upgrade to PowerDVD 10 also in order to use that hardware for true 7.1 audio.

I wish i had a million smackers and money was not an issue.

Found a way to disable the windows defender from running in windows 7. I am not seeing how to uinstall it, but at least its stopped.

Didn't help at all. My first test was to run IGOR. I selected the special features, alternate opening scene. The playback was going smooth, then the video paused (stopped on a scene), the audio kept going, the video did a fast forward (multi speed playback like 8x, not a skip forward), and played the remainder normally after it was synced with the audio again.

I am torn on if i even want to bother with watching the movie now. I am 100% certain it will have playback issues.

Guess i can see if anybody found a way to uninstall windows defender, but soo tired of it all.

I was correct...
16 times in a 87 minute blu ray movie....
The family screamed bloody murder everytime the video paused!
3 times it paused long enough for the audio to stop completely creating a murderous mob with pitchforks.

Totally lost and hanging by a rope while they poke and probe me.

Is there ANYONE with a NVIDIA card that can play blu rays without such horrors?

Sorry Larry,

I went the ATI direction....somehow I am glad I did...the thought of my 20 month old twins with pitchforks...

I can only tell you I have Two ATI Radeon 5770's and they work great...but as you know...no promises...It seems to be such a tangle of getting everything just right. Who knows what the magic combination is?

I just wish it all works out for you... Come on over to my house and watch some movies! Bring the popcorn and leave the pitchforks at home!

Regards,

Kevin

Normally I run a true 720p, but i was doing some special testing at the end when i had given up on it working.

I have set the resolution back to 720p, rebooted the computer, started up media center, told media center to redetect the new display and resolution of 720p.

I started a test tis morning, but had to get my butt to work. During that test i was not fully paying 100% attention as i was getting ready for work. I will try to talk the family into watching something tonight, but after last night (which was the worst it had ever done) i might not win and get overruled.

I have set the resolution back to 720p, rebooted the computer, started up media center, told media center to redetect the new display and resolution of 720p, and then rebooted again.

I started a test tis morning, but had to get my butt to work. During that test i was not fully paying 100% attention as i was getting ready for work. I will try to talk the family into watching something tonight, but after last night (which was the worst it had ever done) i might not win and get overruled.

Thanks Cap'n Kevin. i have taken a quick peak so far to see where we differ. I am going to guess your audio is using the ATI HDMI CODEC out of the ATI video card, over to an AVR, then from the AVR over to the TV using HDMI again?
