Jittering Video Only in Reverse?

I have a phone video shot in 1080P/30. It looks fine and smooth when played forward but when I apply "Tools/Video in Reverse" it becomes jerky. There is a regular pause every 1 second of so. Anything I can do to avoid this jerkiness when viewed in reverse?

Pre-produce the clip/section in reverse and bring that new clip into your timeline.
