I don't know what the cause of the sound issue is with WMP, but (over the last 12 months or so) I've had a few similar anomalies when using WMP... particularly videos made in 16:9 insisting on being played back in 4:3. It didn't matter what I did to try to correct it.
In the end, I gave up on it. I wasn't able to determine the reason for it - even after seeking advice in this forum and everywhere I could.
As you say, other players behave properly. Since I'm not tied to WMP, it now sits in the background doing nothing. I use WMP Classic Home Cinema as my default player (Splash for AVCHD) - and never have any problems.
It would be nice to learn the reason for the inconsistent functioning of WMP, but I ran out of motivation (too many simple alternatives).
