Hi I know this is a budget loaded question so I'll tell you what I'm thinking for a system and please let me know your thoughts.

  • CPU-AMD Ryzen R5 3600X

  • GPU-Geforce GTX 1660 6GB

  • Storage- NVMe M.2 1 TB SSD

  • Ram- 32GB DDR4 3200 2-16GB

I don't use it a ton but my current system doesn't allow me to scub through or get smooth playback of 4K unless I pre render it.

Thoughts?

PS The budget could go a little higher if the performance per dollar spent was worth it...

You'll be pretty happy with that setup, although you may want to push up the number of CPU cores with a 7 or 9 series CPU. See this very recent discussion (especially the ending posts) for more details.

Check this out. For $200 more you get an 80% increase in passmark rating: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare/AMD-Ryzen-9-3900X-vs-AMD-Ryzen-5-3600X/3493vs3494 .

Definitelly the CPU can be better, like tomasc said above.
The GPU choice is good, given the NVENC and NVDEC capabilities.
The SSD is not really helping that much the video editing, any normal HDD has plenty of speed to cope with the decoding/encoding process. Personally I use an SSD for all the program files and a big RAID5 with HDD's for all my work spaces.
The memory is another thing that you need to be paying attention. Ryzen CPU's like fast memory. The 32GB won't really make that much of a difference, compared to 16GB, PD can't use that much memory.

I've just had a new PC built for me using the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X Gen3 8 Core AM4, very slick. It's about £290:00 at the moment.
I'm still using my old NVidia GPU as I needed to save some cash by keeping the GPU and spending money on the CPU. Now, I think that the time has come to replace my old GPU as it's struggling with 4K and two streams of video in the timeline plus video corrections. Also the other video editor I have, now requires GPUs with over 5 GB ram !
I'm using a Intel 660p 1TB M.2 PCIe QLC 3D QLC NVMe SSD/Solid State Drive, the difference between this and the old drive is astounding. however it's been superceded by a 1TB Intel 665p Series, M.2 (2280) PCIe 3.0 (x4) NVMe SSD, QLC 3D3 NAND, 2000MB/s Read, 1925MB/s Write, 160k/250k @ £89:80 Black Friday deal. I might buy it !
Ram used is Corsair Vengeance LPX Black 32GB 3600MHz 2x16GB DDR4 Memory Kit
It's a very quiet set up .

Good luck I just want to edit and make pictures, walk my dog and go fishing.
