Preview Window Scrolling

Until recently I've never had this issue.
When I load a video into the Library window I can scroll through it in the Preview widow without any problems but when I drag it onto the timeline line I cannnot scroll smoothly through it in the Preview window.
The scroll slider will move but the video will only 'catch up' when I pause scrolling.
I have never needed to enable shadow files before, although I have tried this option with no success.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
I have also optimised my GPU's hardware acceleration.
Thank you.

It is possible that the video clip may be a higher resolution than one that you used previously on your timeline. Please read this sticky: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/80133.page and supply a DxDiag.txt.

  1. Right mouse click on the clip on the timeline and click View Properties. Take a screenshot of this window.

  2. Load a video clip that you know that worked properly on your last project and repeat the step 1 above. Attach the two screenshots on your next reply.

Thank You for supplying the information. You have a powerful pc built 4 years ago for 4k video editing. The files you worked with previously were Standard Definition 720x480/60p 6.5 Mbps.

The files that you are currently working on are Full HD 1920x1080/30p 1 Mbps. Creating shadow files at the 720x480 resolution should solve the problem. In Preferences/Hardware acceleration/ Enable Hardware decoding should be checked since you optimized it. If it is not enabled then make sure it is checked. Check your Preview Quality. Set it to high preview quality.

You should be able to edit 4k on this pc. The particular 1920x1080 video file is highly compressed causing the problem. If you simply produce this video on the timeline as a mp4 Default AVC 1920x1080/30p 17 Mbps and then use this produced file to replace the original on the timeline, editing should be more responsive. The produced file size will be about 16 times larger than the original. Shadow files should not be necessary. It should only take a couple of minutes to produce this new 6 minute video file with the GTX 1070 video card.

Lower the Preview Quality to high and no shadow files should be necessary with the newly produced 1920x1080 video files.

In addition to what tomasc just posted I see a couple of things that look a bit off but I'm not sure if they're related to the previewing problem you're seeing.

It looks like you (or someone else) downloaded the Additional Skies clip from YouTube, and it has a very low bitrate. Normally, low bitrates are easier for PD to preview, but there's a chance that it's got an unusual format that's causing PD to lag when decoding it. See if you have the same problem with literally any other HD clip.

If you decide to use shadow files, make sure you wait until the little yellow icons on the clips in the media library turn green.

Your nVidia driver is a few months out of date, but that shouldn't be causing any preview issues.

There are a wide range of app crashes shown at the end of the DxDiag results, and oftentimes those kinds of crashes are caused by problems with Windows' core system files and/or configuration. You may want to run these two commands to detect and repair any system issues.
