Hello, since your stupid homepage is stupid, messy, and doesnt provide ANY important information whatsoever.

All im wondering is, if i buy PowerDVD 17 ULTRA - TODAY, for 45~$ (blackfriday sale?)

Will i be able to playback my store-bought Blu-rays?

will i be able to playback blu-rays that i buy 20 years from today? (AACS)

will i need to pay cyberlink ANY more money than those 45$ from now til the day i die? (for new AACS updates, or other HIDDEN subscription fees)

You are aptly named.

1) Depends on your computer/monitor or other playback device.
2) Do you guarantee you will be alive 20 years from now?
3) Do you guarantee that there will be NO changes in your computer or for industry standards for 20 years?

I'm sure your post was in jest and I answered in like for like. What information are you missing?

Remember also that this is a users forum and not Cyberlink Tech support. Contact Cyberlink directly if you need real answers.
We had nothing to do with Cyberlink's Home page nor with the PowerDVD information. .

Hello Day-Dreamer,

Steve gave you a good reply, but let me clarify some things:

1. PowerDVD 17 will play your current Blu-rays. What you need to be aware of is that it is more than just the player (PowerDVD) that needs continual updating. Your GPU driver and firmware also need updating to get the latest DRM content playback compatibility. Remember that. With that said, please download, install, and run the free Blu-ray Advisor to ensure your system is ready to play Blu-rays. Also, download and try the free trial as well before you buy.

2. What you are asking here is about the software EOL. Best to show you that users who purchased PowerDVD 9 Ultra, can update to version 12 for free to get the latest AACS keys: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/65609.page.

3. As noted above, even though PowerDVD 9 is EOL, users can update to version 12 which still gets the latest AACS keys for free.

There are no guarantees about the future, especially with technology. You also need to think about the Windows operating system. Windows security updates made Blu-ray playback on Windows XP and Vista unavailable: https://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/0/65616.page . So if you had updated your Windows, you would be required to update other software as well.

Hope this sheds some light on things.
Cheers
PowerDVD Modeartor

I updated ASUSDVD v10 to POWERDVD v12 at CYBERLINKs nagging (continual CYBERLINK, not ASUS, nagscreens every time player is used).

Please advise why updating to V12 starts an endless AACS key required loop which prevents me from watching any BluRay movie.

Don't simply ask why support does not continue on a free bundle software for your ASUS device.
ASUSDVD 10 has probably released for 7 years I guess, and you got a powerdvd 12 upgrade later for years.
You paid all the bucks to ASUS to buy an ASUS device but not cyberlink.

Do you know what a retail license is for a digital software and the difference between hardware bundle license?
(if some software has commcercial license (not powerdvd), it will much more expensive than other type of software license.)

If you know the price of a powerdvd retail license, you will understand what you got with an ASUS device is not a retail or full version software. It's just a free bundle for your "convenience".

CYBERLINK was the company who required me to go to a link at CYBERLINKs website to download CYBERLINK software. Not sure how much simpler I can make this for you, but that puts CYBERLINK as the vendor at the first required upgrade.

Do you know what a retail license is and hardware bundle license for a digital software? (if some software has commcercial license (not powerdvd), the pricse will raise more.) Yes, I understand the difference in licenses, this makes no difference as will be explained in the next reply.

same "full licensed" version upgrade without any purchase?
I suggest that you open the software version page in your powerdvd 12 to see the version type.

if the upgrade was freely given, then ask for a full licensed support does make any sense.

So for CYBERLINK to stop me using the ASUS version (made it unable to play), REQUIRE me to swap to its product to be able to do the same as I was previously on ASUS version, then abandon me with no working product does make sense? All because it wont properly update a 3rd party license on some platforms.

Im sure CYBERLINK did not just give its software to ASUS for free, there would have been some exchange which makes it a purchased product in any court of law.

If that the case, why not just give an error message, that tells me Im no longer supported, instead of the AACS license update loop that has been ongoing in CYBERLINK software since ver 9 ( I suggest you look at the forums to see Im not the only person this has affected, or on the only version, or retail vs non-retail customers). They seem to be pretty hot on annoying popups, surely this would be an easy one for them.

The most logical explanation is greed by CYBERLINK, wanting people to keep paying for more upgrades.

All of the version and other information has been sent on a customer support docket, but the usual templated responses are happening. Was hoping for some direction from other users, but I guess the forum user base is a reflection of the company.

Hello,
The original quote from the moderator was about the retail full version that users paid for, so you should not try and compare.

You received an OEM version, which is not a full version. You paid probably $1 for it (at most) and it has lasted you probably 4 or 5 years. Maybe more?

The reason the software is nagging you to update, is because the AACS keys have expired, and new ones were issued, which was done by the movie studios, not by CyberLink.

PowerDVD is looking for the new keys, but they are not available because the OEM license from your drive manufacturer has ended. This is what it is telling you. You are aiming the blame at CyberLink (understand why, but it is misguided) but it was your drive manufacturer's decision to stop providing the new keys. You should ask them for a newer OEM version of PowerDVD that they give when buying a new drive. You got an update from 10 to 12 previously.

I agree that this should be clearer in the update wording, but it is what it is. The movie studios and the Blu-ray Disc Association really do a lot to try and protect their content, and the hardware and software vendors are left being the bad guys.

Dave
