You need to tell us more details.

  1. Is this 8 mm film or video, is it regular 8 or Super 8?

  2. What does the image look like when projected on a screen with a projector? (If film)

  3. If you can project the image, measure the height and width, divide the width by the height, that is the Aspect Ratio.

  4. On the Sony camera, does its say in the specs what the image size is and what the aspect ratio is.

Sony made Analog and digital 8mm video camcorders. What is the model number? Capturing analog and digital are two different methods. The aspect ratio depends on how you set the camcorder. I dont' recall if my old Sony analog 8mm had widescreen mode, but I do know the digital 8mm did. Intel i7 4770k, 16GB, GTX1060 3GB, Two 240GB SSD, 4TB HD, Sony HDR-TD20V 3D camcorder, Sony SLT-A65VK for still images, Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

The best capture is from using firewire to capture dv-avi. The settings are in the preferences if you have and setup firewire correctly.

It does sound like that you are not familiar with this particular type of camcorder at all. The aspect ratio is 4:3 standard definition of 720 x 480 resolution on d8 tape. The link you supplied is not correct for PD16. There is no mpeg-1, vcd, or QuickTime available. Mpeg-2 HQ capture is good for about 1.2 hours of capture for 4.7 GB. For a 2 hour 4.7 GB capture you need to use the SP quality capture. The EP capture setting is good for 3 hours of capture for the same 4.7 GB and this would be the lowest quality setting.

Thank you for fixing the text formatting problem by deleting your post. You can set Aspect ratio to 4:3, mpeg-2 hq for capturing.
