Choppy mp4 playback

  • Intel 8700K 8th gen CPU on an MSI Z370 Gaming M5 motherboard
  • nVidia GTX 1080ti
  • 16gb DDR4 3200 RAM
  • Samsung 960 PRO M.2 SSD
  • PowerDVD 17.0.2101.62

I have dual 2k monitors, one plugged into the nVidia, the other plugged into the Intel, both DisplayPort. Blu-Ray playback is perfect - smooth as glass on either monitor, but mp4 (1080p) playback is terrible and choppy on either monitor.

  • Gaming is perfect (on the GTX of course), incredible framerates!
  • Movies & TV Windows app plays mp4 perfectly fine on either monitor
  • Windows Media player is fine with mp4 too on either monitor

Any suggestions?

MP4 can be encoded with various video codec. eg H.264, H.265

Did this problem happen on all of your MP4, or ceratin of them that produced from same source?

Are you playing a HDR video?

Talking with support (which so far has been frustrating).

To answer though, it's all H.264 encoded. H.265 plays back fine on either monitor/GPU and so does regular blu-ray. It's only my H.264 videos that are causing problems, and it's pretty inconsistent when it happens. One time the movie will play fine, another it won't. Also it may start out fine and then stutter, or possibly even when I move the app window from one monitor to the other. I haven't been able to nail it down yet.
