I've got a video that desparately needs some basic audio track adjustments. It needs usual equalizer stuff (less bass, etc.) and gain.

I'm not facile with how to do this. What is "best practice" or common practice to do this?

Do I need to remove the audio from the video, and use a separate audio processing editor? If so, how do I re-import it and

get it to stay in sync?

Thanks

Try to either use the WaveEditor (comes with PD), or AudioDirector (separate buy or part of a suite). Select the clip in the time-line and click on edit Audio in the Bar just above the time-line.

Thanks. Got it to work doing a basic equalizer task.

Then tried to do an audio compression and Windows complained that WaveEditor had stopped running. It looked to me like it was running, but Windows splashed up a dialog box and then canceled the run, closing WaveEditor.

This failed twice. I'll have to try it a few times to attempt to isolate what is going on.

Running PD16 with the beta patch

Hmmm. Interesting to know why you would want to compress (and what kind of compression you use). Hard to say from a distance why your computer gives up (also from very close by it is often hard: If you are looking for a lower quality, compressed audio track, maybe this can also ben done by using appropriate output parameters at produce time?

audio compression is not related to file compression. Nothing to do with PKZIP or MP3 or that kinda stuff.

In recording studios, you compress the audio (making loud parts softer and soft parts louder) so that you can hear the soft parts. Radio stations do it so that you can get more distance out of the signal. I want to do it so that the loud parts don't blow out the listener's ears while the soft parts are loud enough to hear.

Audio compression is also used as an effect. It can increase sustain, letting a note ring on rather than decaying quickly. Its often used with reverb and noise gates, which is how you get the classic drum sound on 80s rock/pop music.

You can use VST Plugins in WaveEditor or in AudioDirector, if they cannot compress audio by nature.

Sound compression I understood that : There are in waveEditor various ways to compress the audio amongst which VST plugins, if you have thme or can find them. I was only wondering what you were using when your computer stalled.

I was just using the standard CyberLing Wave Editor 2's audio compression option, no VST stuff at all

I did some tests. It keeps working for me. Hard to tell what went wrong. Alternative would be to use a free audio editor like Audacity; you may have to unlink video and audio depending on the format used. Good luck!

I'm considering PD16 after using Vegas Movie 14. In Vegas I can simply click on an fx icon in any audio track and I'm given a choice of any effects I have on my PC. Am I correct in seeing that the only way to do this with PD16 is to open the audio file in a seperate editor?
