GPU utilization by CyberLink, AMD vs Nvidia?

I have an opportunity to get an excellent deal on a i7-7500U laptop. There are two models, at the same price; one with an nvidia 940m and the other with an AMD R7 M440. The AMD laptop has DDR4 memory, the Nvidia laptop has DDR3. Otherwise they're identical.

With PowerDirector 15 and the current state of the Nvidia and AMD drivers, which of the two GPUs, AMD or Nvidia, are likely to be more effectively used?

I'm one of the ones who have never, ever seen Cyberlink utilize my current Nviaia GPU (an older 840M). Searching the forums, I read far more comments about problems getting Nvidia GPUs running in Power Director than I see AMD-related posts.

I don't care which GPU is 'better' laughing. Pretty much only care which one is better utilized by PowerDiretor.

Thanks.

It depends on the model of the video card and the driver software. Newer video cards have much more capability.

There are differences in what video formats are supported on which brand of Video Card.

I am no expert on such matters, but I have read here that laptops with certain configurations cannot "properly" utilize their various graphics cards within PD. Bios issues, some of which can be worked around, apparently. Not sure what you should search for here, but there are answers.

Thanks Barry, Carl. Your answers are certainly more useful than a web link to sales literature ;-(

Anyway, that's about what I've found searching. Was hoping that someone (Cyberlink, hello out there, anone home??!!) would have finally figured out what's up with AMD vs Nvidia on laptop platforms, driver versions, etc.

A poorly working or totally inop laptop AMD/Nvidia will always be outperformed by an Intel IGP. But since high-end 7th gen i7 laptops nearly always come with a GPU, it would have made sense to go for the GPU with the most real-world potential.

Perhaps a go at the Nvidia user forum would be a worthy pursuit. The two most knowledgeable people in such matters no longer come here. JL_JL and Sonic.

You might to search here for Optimus and bios, and laptop refunds. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Let's get real here. The difference you will see in a GPU on a laptop will be nothing to even talk about. It won't even be on the radar! Negligable at best even in the most extreme/optimized/greatest driver configuration.

Get a serious desktop computer with a multi-core CPU and some serious CUDA power on the GPU and then we can talk.

I have a Sager laptop i7 7700HQ with GTX 1060 6GB RAM. Could easily replace my aging desktop with i7 4770k GTX1060. If you're willing to spend the money, there are plenty of higher end laptops can can out perform most desktops.

Oh Brother! Your CPU is ranked 87th per CPU Benchmarks (http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-7700HQ-vs-Intel-Core-i7-6700HQ/m211019vsm34954 I am NOT shaking in my boots! But to be fair, ALL laptop CPU's are WAY BELOW Desktop CPU Benchmarks contrary to what Laptop manufacturers will have you believe! And to render 4K on a Laptop would be Laptop suicide. Better have a fire extinquiser handy! Sorry for the reality check. It is what it is.

That link was for the 6700HQ NOT the 7700HQ. At least get it correct.

I have no problem editing 4k on my laptop. Reality check! And it has great cooling system. THink you need to brush up on your laptop technology. Stop being such a desktop snob.

PD favors Intel & nVidia than AMD! besides AMD doesn't fully utilize available memory that well...

however, your pain level is high. read this thread.

New PC for video editing; advice sought.
