Advice for new rig please

Hi All,

I would really value your advice regarding a new rig build. This will be for editing using Cyberlink Powerdirector 14. Files will be 4k video files, some of which may be 10Gb or approx 25 minutes in length.

I'll be building this rig myself as I have done in the past. My budget for the build is aprrox NZ$2k.

Components I have ear marked for this are as follows... any feedback,suggestions on alternatives etc would be greatly appraciated before I part with my money!

CASE

Am I missing them, but you don't seem to mention hard drives. If you are working with 4K I would suggest the biggest you can afford, and they should be SSDs as they are far more effiicient. Panny TM10, GH2, GH4,

Are you in the US so you don;t have to worry about extra taxes on working computers?

Are you going to build your own? Why? When was the last time you built a computer like this. .

Hi Guys,

Yes I forgot to mentio the HDD's. I will be using two Adata 256GB SP900 Series SSD's. One for OS and programs, the other as the storage for working files only - currently I copy the files I'm editing to one SSD while editing then when I'm done I delete them.

Dollars are as Shadowman picked up in NZ dollars, and unfortunately GST is applied to everything here in NZ!

I've always built my own and my sons gaming rigs so I'm not phased by putting the componentry together. What I'm really wanting to know is if the components I've selected are the best spend for my money vs Cyberlink & 4K requirements.

In my experience, and I only shoot and edit 4K, you will still need the use of shadow files. So be aware, no matter how powerful you build your machine, it MAY still need some help with these huge files and high bit rates.

What I am saying is don't be disappointed if, when you have created your masterpiece, you get a few jumps and jerks on the timeline still. Just be prepared to use something like shadow files for an easier edit.

Seems like you already got your rig. In my experience with the ADATA SP550 240GB, the write performance sucked. After writing a few GB (really, only a few seconds), it dropped to much slower than HDD performance.

Not sure if this is the case on your SP900 also.

I returned it for something better. The machine that I was using was an HTPC running Skylake. Replacement is a Patriot Ignite, and does not have any problem sustaining writes at 200 MB/s +.

Anyway, this might not necessarily matter for editing . It's a shame when copying video files from the camera when the SD card (95 MB/s UHS-1 or 200MB/s UHS-II) is faster than the SSD . MSI X99A Raider
