PD7 - Not Responding. SORTED - Beware of Haali Media Splitter.

I seem to be experiencing a lot of freeze ups and "Not Responding" anytime I click on ANY buttons.

for example:

I play the entire movie with say 5 clips and it freezes on the second or third clip. The progress bar continues past the second clip but the movie is frozen at the end of the first clip and then stops midway in the second clip.

While editing a clip I can expect to wait minutes after I click on ANY buttons, the program freezes and windows task manager show a not responding status.

This is becoming a regular routine and somewhat irritating to have to wait.

Has anybody experienced this instability?

Thank You,

RC

Hi RC,

I find it is becoming more important to keep on top of these routine housekeeping tasks as PD becomes more complex and we use more HD etc etc.

My own opinion is that PD is quite sensitive to fragmentation and CPU/disc drive loading. I currently have a visual CPU/RAM and page file indicator that is quite instructive, especially when testing new things.

Thanks Adrian,

Great information and I've implemented all the suggested fixes.

I'm still getting the same responses when clicking on ANY buttons.

Anytime I click on a button the software freezes and takes as much as a minute and half to react.

When I monitor my Windozs Task Manager I get PD "Not Responding"

When playing the entire movie (5 clips); the first clip plays and the time line indicator bar travels across the screen but the second clip is not visible and half way through the second clip the indicator bar stops and everything freezes.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Should I be reinstalling the software?

I would really like to fix this

Hi RC,

It's a bit of a pain but I resort to an uninstall/reinstall if PD seems to be falling over for no single reason. It happens more than I would like but a reinstall often seems to reset things.

For example, I seem to recall having problems with my preview on PD6 that seemed to be linked to autoupdates of itunes/quicktime (which seems to be frequent) but I was never sure but which needed a reinstall regularly.

I uninstalled PD7 and defraggled the disk and reinstalled.

Getting the same problem.

Wow if I had known I was going to have to install/reinstall the program on a regular basis I would have considered another editor.

RC, don't think this is normal. I have installed PD only once each time I have reinstalled the operating system and never needed to do it again.
I suspect there is more to your troubles than just needing a re-install

Presently, I can't use the software and I need to produce movies in the next few weeks.

How can I solve this problem?

Thank you,

RC

Hi Scope -
I was having similar issues, till I uninstalled using the Windows Install Clean Up Utility, available at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

There are also some good tips on Dafydd's page
http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/2405.page

By the way, when I reinstalled (the last time) - I agree that it's a pain to have to do this (!) - I didn't update PD7 with the latest patch. It seems to be happier now (at least on my machine).

Cheers -
Tony

CORRECTION!
It was happy until I tried to open a project I'd been working on previously... got the "created by a newer version... blah blah" - so I had to reinstall the 2519 patch.

That's about the 5th seriously senior moment I've had today. GAWD! Tread gently and you'll hear the daisies grow...

Tony,
Sorry to read about the "senior" moment, I hope you've recovered

I think the "newer" pds can be tweaked to become the older build - I haven't done it but it should be a minor scripting change, I think, to alter the read info in the pds so you could open it with 2227 for example.

I run Windozs XP on a one year old machine

I'm willing to uninstall again and update as per Tony's instructions

Don't get me wrong, I like the software it's the instability I can't live with.

Perhaps another patch will become available soon.........I hope.

Will report on the results

Thanks,

RC

OK!

I've uninstalled the software and defraggled the drive several times which took as long as three hours on the first try.

Reinstalled PD7 and the update and defraggled the drive again.
Installed Scotty and turned off start up program to minimize CPU demand.
Turned off the modem and shut off Bit Defender.

I'm having the same problem with freeze ups and the preview window stopping at the end of the first clip while the time bar travels midway through the second clip and stops.

NOW!

I've noticed that several Haali Media Splitter icons appear in my system tray. There are between 3-6 icons that appear and disappear like Xmas lights.
Would that have anything to do with the freeze ups and "not responding" error messages?

I'd sure like to get this fixed.

Thank you,

RC

ps Also updated windoz and NVidia drivers. I'm thinking it's in the software, I have no problem with playing movies, gaming etc.

Take this issue to Tech support please, they may know why you're having this issue - looks isolated to your set up.

Dafydd
[Post New]
Agreed, Dafydd!

Scope - I think it is far more likely to be your system than a particular PD7 issue, but tech support should be your first avenue.

If that doesn't work - given that you've already tried the uninstall/re-install option - my suggestion would be to back up your data (if not already) and do a complete system restore.

If that doesn't work, a dirty great big group cyber hug will be needed!

Good luck with it.

Cheers -

I can't remember where I came across it but I recall several problems being reported with Haali Media splitter. I'd check it out with a google search - maybe do an uninstall of haali and see what happens. I think you can then reinstall but maybe choose different options.
If I see anything I'll post it here.

Cheers

Hi RC,

I agree with Dafydd and Tony, the issue does appear to be particular to your operating system.

Did you install the Haalie Media Splitter, or was it attached to another program. On some systems this Splitter can act more like a Trojan than a useful piece of software.
Your description could indicate that the Splitter is trying to take control of PD7 and this could be the issue here.

Try uninstalling Haalie Media Splitter, this will be extremely difficult to remove as it has a habit of reinstalling itself, you will therefore need a good cleaner.

Strangely, my posts seem to have been stolen again. This may be the 3rd repetitive one?

Others on different forums have had problems reported with haali :-

http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t12998.html

http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/30740p1.html

http://forum.doom9.org/archive/index.php/t-109759.html old post

maybe worth uninstalling and see what happens??

hi Robert,

I hesitate to post again - the order of posting seems to be slightly random. A bit like waiting for a bus - then they all arrive at once.
