How can I get more PIP's/particles/titles to show in 360 mode?

Hi,

I'm having tremendous fun with PD 15. However, when I start doing things in 360 edit mode, I'm left with a fraction of my installed library items. In particular: Pip's (17 of 117 show), Particles (5 of 110 show) and Titles (21 of 150 show).

There are certainly more then just this handfull of them that will work in 360 mode?

Is there a way to get more of them to show in 360 edit mode? If I work in 16:9 mode all of them show. In 4:3 mode a few less, but still almost all. Only in 360 mode I'm left with about 10% of these left to choose from?

Is this a bug, intentional and can I edit some file somewhere to get more of them to show?

Any help greatly appreciated. I feel a bit handicapped here.

kind regards, Frank

Hi Frank -

True - only a small percentage of PiP Object, particles & title templates are available when working in 360 mode. I wouldn't call it a bug - just a compatibility issue.

Try this:

  1. Insert a 360° video in Track 1, with your timeline set to 16:9 (all PiPs etc available)

  2. Insert a PiP Object - say "Record"

  3. Switch timeline to 360 - "Record" is zoomed

  4. Select PiP & try to resize it. frown

You could resize the PiP before switching to 360 mode, but I have no idea how that would function in the produced video.

Anyway, that's a shonky way of incorporating other (non-compatible) effects into your 360 project.

Cheers - Tony

Frank -

What I suggested above kinda works. Trouble is, the PiP, particle or title is stuck on a particular view of the video.

Here's a little test I just did. If you view without panning, each of the effects shows up. 2xPiP, 2xparticle & 2xtitle. If you pan about (as one does), the effect could easily be happening out of view.

Edit: view on YouTube - looks like rubbish here.

You can also see the distortion impact on effects.

Cheers - Tony

Not every template suits 360 video so some of them are hidden when you set project as 360(2:1) aspect ratio.

But here is a tricky way: Switch project to 16:9, select a template and add it to timeline, switch project to 360 and open the template on timeline in PiP Designer, save it as a custom template. POOF! Now you get a 360 custom template.

Thanks for answering people!

I agree, obviously not everything will work in 360. However, the selection is really much too small I believe. And this small selection is only in PIP, Particle and Title, yet I still have all 147 transitions. Many of the transitions also don't work, so there is a discrepancy here.

The workaround of constantly switching between 16:9 and 360 does work however. When I change aspect, I can drag stuff in and it remains when switching back to 360. A bit clunky to do it this way, but at least I have my options back.

There are indeed a fair few items that DO work in 360 but are not shown as I have found out sofar. So the left out bits are not all incompatible.

I think creative freedom should also be key here. To have your options slashed this severely (leaving only about 10% of my arsenal) doesn't make much sense IMO. It's all non-destructive editing, so if you find something doesn't work, you remove it. And in other cases, something that at first glance doesn't sit well in 360, might make a creative effect in another part of the movie.

PD could show an info box informing me there are compatibility issues with several items and then just show all of them. Or at least give us a much larger section, since there are really more of them that work.

I'm no expert but also definitely not a novice. Around 25 years ago I spent a few years as volunteer at a local TV station, doing edits on broadcast machines (tape to tape editing). Over the years I kept an affinity with video and dabled a bit in free editors and sometimes with (yeah, I know) pirated copies of a few paid ones.

Many years ago I decided to ditch all pirated software, and only did a few little movies in things like Videopad or Moviemaker. Now I want to get a bit more involved and decided to go for it and buy PowerDirector. Very happy with it, though this put me off a little. Good to at least have a workaround by switching to and from 16:9 to 360.

Hopefully there will be more object available in an update.

regards, Frank
