Here's something I'm at a loss to understand.

I just produced a video that's approximately 1:10 long (5110 MB). I know it was too long for a 4.7 disc, so I unchecked burn to disc and cheked burn to file and gave it a name.

When I click burn, it said it was too long even though the space available below said 1437.4 GB available and needed 5110 MB.

So, I went back to the settings, under 2D disc selected 8.7GB. Burned no problem.

What I don't understand is, if I'm burning to file only and no disc, why the limitation on the length. I didn't know files had llmitations.

Any ideas on this? Jack

You did not go to the Produce page to create a file which of course has no 4.7 GB file size limitation in which you did not do. Instead you made a mistake by going to the Create Disc page to choose to create a set of files with folders which contains vobs and ts.ifo and .bup files suitable for burning to a dvd.

Use the produce page to create a single file of the format and type you want.

Certain aspects within a DVD video disc are enforced for future proper playback. This check occurs regardless if you burn an actual disc, create a iso file, or create a video folder. PD checks the estimated project size vs the media size selected, to determine if it fits. This check has nothing to do with how much space you have available on the current hard disk destination. If by chance your project size is estimated larger than a 4.7GB DVD, then the 8.5GB setting may work. If size is estimated larger than 8.5GB, one needs to select a different media that supports larger projects.

Basically, certain rules apply for DVD video, PD didn't make those, it's simply trying to conform to them.

Thanks tomasc for your response. Not sure what you mean in your post. I certainly did go to the Produce page. I clicked on SVRT and nothing came up. So I selected MPEG-2 and Start (see atch). When finished, I went to the burn page, selected No Menu all pages. When I clicked to burn, I unchecked Disc and File, gave it a name, then Start. That's when I got the warning the file was to big. Maybe I missed something and I'd appreciate it if you could point that out to me. Thanks again.

You are confused in stating a problem the way you see it. Jeff gave you the best possible explanation. Let us get this right.

  1. Produced a 1 hour 10 minute file which became 5110 MB or about 5.1 GB using the mpeg-2 8 Mbps setting.

  2. Went to the Create Disc page. Imported the above produced file and chose No Menu. The 4.7 GB dvd cannot be created because 5.1 GB file is larger than the maximum 4.7 GB dvd selected. That was your error or information message.

  3. Changed the dvd selection from 4.7 GB to 8.5 GB. You can now burn a 8.5 GB dvd+-r dl successfully. The 5.1 GB produced file is larger than the 4.7 GB maximum. Did you not answer your own question. That produced 5.1 GB file is 5.1 GB – 4.7 GB= 0.4 GB too large to fit a 4.7 GB dvd.

There are several things that you could have done. In the produce step, why did you choose the 8 Mb setting when you said you already know that the file will be too big to fit a 4.7 GB maximum for a dvd??

The drop down arrow allows you to scroll up to choose a 2 or 3 Mbps bit rate video setting and the produced file will only be 8 Mbps/2Mbps =5110/4=1277 MB in size. That of course will fit a 4.7 GB dvd.

The same result could have been achieved and fit a 4.7 GB dvd in the Create Disc page. Your JVC camcorder produces 4:3 SD video. In the recording format choose 4:3. In the encoding format choose either Smart Fit, SP, or LP but not HQ and it wil fit a 4.7 GB dvd. I just tried it and it works.

Another thought. You could have saved time by not doing the Produce step. Do it all in the Create Disc page. 2.2 hours of video should fit if SP is selected. 3+ hours of video should fit if LP is selected.

Let us know if your question is sufficiently answered. If you choose LP you can put maybe 7 hours of video on a 8.5 GB dvd. You just need to select the correct settings. Some users may prefer 7 hours of video on 1 disc instead of 7 hours of video on 7 separate disc. Quality of course will not be as good if only on 1 disc.
