How to fade video without fading sound.

I'm working on editing an old video recording that has acting and narration. In certain places I have replaced the video with an image, but the narration continues. I want to fade into the image, and then after a time fade back into the video, but whenever I do that the narrator's voice fades out for a moment.

Is there any way that I can do a crossfade without fading the audio?

I have found that it works if I fade to black instead of crossfade, but I prefer crossfading the video.

I've tried splitting audio and video, and putting them on different tracks, etc., but still every time I insert "crossfade" PD 12 automatically moves the audio around on the other tracks. I'm using PowerDirector 12 on a Windows 10 computer.

Any ideas?

Did you try transition type cross instead of overlap in the setting yet...

Yes, at first I inserted a "fade" transition, then set it to "crossfade." Later when trying to solve the problem I saw the option of dragging the video track to overlap and make the crossfade, but that seemed to cause even more problems.

The image should be dropped onto a second track(Video Track 2) with fade transition applied at the beginning and end while on the second video track. If you're using any version from PD9 to PD13, a third video(and audio) track will be automatically inserted. Just click on the new unwanted track, right-click for "remove empty track" and remove that unwanted track. Any further inserts on Vid. Track 2 should not reopen the unwanted track.

The effect you want is for the photo image to appear over the existing video, then fade out again.

A second method is to, again drop the image on the second video track(unwanted third track appears, just do as I had earlier remarked), this time click on Modify, you can make the image fade in and out using keyframes.

In each case the length of time the image fades in, stays on screen and fades out, is user-adjustable.

Thanks, this solved my problem! It wasn't what I was looking for, but it turns out I was looking for the wrong thing! I had thought I had to cut out a bit of the video and put the picture in, but putting the picture on another track on top of the video is much simpler, and the fading works perfectly.

P.S. I have PowerDirecter 12, but the unwanted third track didn't show up for me.

The situation with extra video tracks automatically inserting must've started with PD13 then. It can be a nuisance, yes, but it has some uses.
