changing color of a rope and garbage matt.

I don't own color director but I have a few questions about what it is capable of doing.

Let's pretend wonder woman throws her magic lasso. As it uncoils you want it to take on a magic golden glow. Is this possible to do in color director? The rope is becoming longer and straighter very quickly.

Can color director be used to make a mask that would exactly outline the shape of an object. For instance a man is running and you only want the man to be in the video but everything else in the video would be covered by a matt or mask (if I am using the correct terminology) so other video can replace it like what is done in green screen. I am not sure but maybe I am describing a garbage matt.

thanks,

Hi Heavytiger Welcome to our Forum. I know what you mean however it would be easier to let Cyberlink do the talking, here is a link to just one of the many "HOW To Do It"videos that are available. Motion Tracking Have fun.

Cheers I just want to edit and make pictures, walk my dog and go fishing.

Thanks Klye. That helped for changing the color of a moving object. But do you know if part of a scene can be completely masked out so a second background layer can become visible?

Hello HeavyTiger,

Welcome to the ColorDirector forum laughing

Kyle has pointed you in the right direction with the use of Motion Tracking masks. I'd be less-than-honest with you if I suggested that this process is not without difficulties.

You would have noticed that the tutorial maker deliberately chose a clip where there is strong contrast between the subject and background, & that the background is completely uncomplicated (sky). The less contrast & greater background complexity, the more difficult the task becomes. I'm not trying to put you off the idea - it's possible - but be prepared to spend time getting it right.

■ When setting the motion tracking mask, you can use the regular tracker or set the mask frame-by-frame for greater accuracy. For your Wonder Woman colour changing rope idea, I'd think frame-by-frame would be the only way to achieve that.

■ The mask can be inverted so adjustments can be made to the "background"

■ Here, colour adjustments are made to the inverted mask area

■ Next the clip would be produced with its modified background. In PowerDirector, chroma-key would be applied to incorporate a different background clip.

The clip I used for these screenshots is 15 seconds in duration. I'd estimate at least an hour's work in masking & changing the background. If the runner was also throwing a rope (!), add another hour+.

HT, your idea is possible using CDR & PDR. If I get a few spare hours, I'll put it to the test & post the result.

Thanks Heavytiger. Pix has already given an excellent reply using ColorDirector. I tried to use Powerdirector but I think this is pushing it to it's limits. It is one of things that I do hope will improve over coming PD versions. the latest PowerDirector now has the ability to "blend" in the video tracks but I don't have this latest version so can't give you any more info about it!

What I have done is used the PiP Designer to use just basic masking and using the square mask provided I have masked out a different part of the video in each of the 3 vidoe clips, to reveal the next layer

The video clips I've used were shot by Hit Film. There are just 3 Star Wars troopers used in the clips but by shooting the same scene several times and moving the actors to a different position and with the use of masking, it is possible to fill the scene with extra troopers!

Here is the 3" video showing Storm troopers . The video was recorded by HitFilm for use with their project, Rebellion - a Star Wars-style fan film I do hope they won't be upset with my usage in PowerDirector.

I really think that if you are going to heavy, FX based editing with lots of masking and keying, then PowerDirector may not be for you! ( I'll prbably get barred from this site now that I've said that !frown )

Happy editing.

Kyle and Pix

Pix you put a lot of effort in responding to my question. Thank you very much.

Kyle thank you for your honest assessment. I guess some of the things I want to be able to do require professional level software if they are to be done efficiently.

Thanks Heavytiger, are you into making a "feature" or just wanting to try something out?

it really depends on how many wires you need to remove. Just one or two then a simple "clone" FX using something like Cyberlink Director Suite would probably do, as you get PowerDirector + ColorDirector with all the other great programes for a reasonable price. It is a great editor, fairly cheap (!) very simple to use and with the added advantage of being able to "Pack your complete project" with all it's files to a different drive for future use. There are draw backs.

However, After FX would does have a simple wire removal. Then theres Boris Continuum Complete Wire Removal has an extremely good reputation. You just have to work out what you really need.

Good hunting wink I just want to edit and make pictures, walk my dog and go fishing.
