PD14 Interlacing Problems - Drone Aerial Video Footage SOLVED

Hi CS2014 - The reinstallation of PD9 has produced a nice smooth video played back on the PC before burning. Yes!

I think my error was I was not converting it correctly at the beginning before importing into PD14 so I should probably reinstall PD14 once I have mastered a process that works first via PD9.

BUT I still do not have a good looking video playing through the player/TV on PD9?? Annoying me!

This is where I am stuck currently. Anybody got any ideas? I will try to upload to You Tube also in a day or so, but why will the file not burn to a dvd and playback with no pixelation on the player/TV?

... and what you are viewing through your TV .. this is a burned DVD correct?

Probably the next question will be - does a 'produced' file play as intended with good quality - can you produce a video file and play it from a flash drive / thumb drive... does this play correctly?

I think part of the problem is that we can't get a feel for the degree of pixellation you're experiencing. SD, 720x480 as used in a DVD, is always pixellated to some extent even when viewing live broadcasts. This becomes more apparent when viewed on a large HD TV (I don't think you've mentioned the size of yours) so what you're seeing may be perfectly normal for a Standard Definition picture. As you've suggested, you can get much better quality by producing to HD and burning a Blu-Ray disc, even though this will still only be 2K rather than 4K..

Mike's got a good point too.

I was trying to see if you played this DVD on a few players and got the same result. But if you can upload a small... 10 second portion or less and we could view it, this might clear up a LOT of confusion.

It is a 50 inch Panasonic.
The blu-ray player is a Panasonic DMP-BDT700 I am using. Just wondering if I should invest in a blu-ray rewriter and write to blu-ray disc?

I have just played it on an old HD Sony 36 inch via a very old Panasonic dvd player and it is pixelated also.

Have you tried the DVD .. that you burned... on other DVD players?

Are there any USB -input sort of connections on your Panasonic BDT700 ... like the one I have on my BluRay player? This lets me play a video from a flash drive.

Certainly might be a concern too, time will tell.

If the picture is correct at this website - http://www.whathifi.com/panasonic/dmp-bdt700/review - (it's about 1/2 way down the page) I think it has a USB port. Maybe you could produce a video too gas... see if it plays correctly from a flash/Thumb drive?

Thanks guys, I will try this approach tomorrow. I will report back. Losing faith with burning to a dvd so a flash drive USB stick is the next task.

Sounds good ... let us know the results

And maybe just make a 10 second video ... see if IT has the same issue when played from a flahsdrive. If it does, then maybe upload it to youtube or do a screen record if you're usiung PD14.

CS2014, will take yours (and others) advice and reload PD14 Ultimate tomorrow and persevere with the USB and or You Tube approach.

Thanks for your help and advice guys. Really appreciate it.

Quote: That player has ethernet connectivity and is DLNA capable. You can play stuff right off your computer. I stream videos via DLNA from my computer to my TV. Your TV probably has an ethernet port as well with the same capability.

Hi Longedge, even better. It is a new player so will have a look at this also .

Longedge and gas,

I just want to make sure you - gas - aren't playing the video straight from the timeline editing window in PD .. when you connect to the DVD player with ethernet or whatever connection was direct to DVD player.

I wanted to make sure you (gas) were taking a 'produced' (rendered) video and trying to play THAT type of material. Now i am NOT an expert with some of this terminology, so please feel free to correct me but...

Rendering is the process where PD takes the editing window video and processes it in to a way that you either produce/create a file or burn to a DVD sort of format. If gas has been having the issue with the burned DVD I was trying to see if the produced file had the same issue - the produced file being copied to a flashdrive and played from there.

Like I said, I'm not as expert as so many of you in here but what I just described was what I was trying to narrow down with gas.

CS2014, I am producing/rendering and then burning the project to a dvd disc, not burning the project from the Timeline.. I will try to burn the project to a USB drive tomorrow.

The produced file (before burning) plays well through the PC monitor.
I will report back in a day or so as you have all been brilliant at giving me the guide I need. I am on a learning curve!!!

Sorry if it sounded like I was 'beating a dead horse' there gas.

I was just trying to distinguish between playing the video as through the timeline and processing that timeline into 1 - a DVD disc... or 2 - 'Producing' it into a file.

I distinguish 'Producing' and burning to a disc by stating the word 'produce' - I do this because I see the tab in PD that says "Produce" and that is the module (hope I'm using that word correctly) that I am referring to when i say 'produce' a file.

This 'production' file (created through the 'Produce' module in PD) is the file I would like to see if you get the same results.

Again.. sorry if it seems like I'M preaching but I find some text communication challenging when trying to resolve technical issues - UNLESS ... we can all talk the same terms and language (and I'm not saying I have all the right terms... so I hope those reading this will correct me so I can learn the correct terms).

Hi gasjkh3 -

You've been getting some good advice from Longedge, Fenman, Carl & CS.

I'm glad you're beginning to rethink what you do with the footage you shoot with your DJI Phantom 3. Burning to DVD is quite an appalling thing to do to 4K clips! Especially when you're going to view them on a 4K TV! surprised

That process is the reason you're seeing that tearing or combing (interlacing effects). Your starting with 4K/UHD clips 2160p - rendering or burning to DVD format 720x480 - then your player is upscaling when you view it on your 4K TV. In relative terms, it's kinda like this:

As Longedge suggested, you'd get far better results by leaving out the middle step completely. Stream it, transfer it to a thumb/external drive or burn to BR & you'll be happier.

Attached is a screenshot showing a UHD 3840X2160 clip (on the left) and the DVD version of the same frame (on the right)... and that's a still frame. It looks terrible when panning, which is difficult not to do with a drone!

Cheers - Tony
