Interesting sidenote: I had a problem several weeks ago with intermittent audio in MOV files. CL provided me a free download of MediaEspresso, which I dutifully installed, to convert my MOV files to MP4. When I tried to use MediaEspresso, I got an error message. I contacted CL support and got the following response three days ago:
"Dear user,
Thank you for writing back.
In regards to your concern, I would like to inform that after checking, the MediaEspresso error message is suspected the compatible issue with the latest QuickTime version v7.7.9. We are clarifing the issue in the MediaExpresso team.
For the original PowerDirector issue, suggest you can use the freeware "HandBrake" to transcode the MOV to H.264 MP4 then editing in PowerDirector.

Converting my MOV files to MP4, using HandBrake, solved my original problem. Apparently, Apple products don't play well with others (they probably run with scissors, too).
