I highly recommend Process Explorer

It's a glorified Task Manager. If you run it with Admin rights (Run as Admin) it will let you sort by "Company Name".
Anything that doesn't have a "Company Name" (unless you specifically know it should be there) should not be running. I have a process called Core Temp with no "Company Name" but I know it's ok because I installed it and it let's me see my computer temps.
Anything related to Windows, "Microsoft Corporation" LEAVE ALONE!
You will see a few or a lot of svchost.exe, those are the Host process for other dll files. If you hover your cursor over one, it will display what processes it's running.
Anything related to your computer maker (ACER, Toshiba etc) is ok to experiment with.
Anything that is a toolbar or updater, turn off.
