Able to use HA only one time - GTX960M - SOLVED
[Post New]
Kind of funny...my new laptop:

i7-4720

16 gig

GTX960M card/2 gig

1 TB 5400 hard drive

256 gig SSD

When I produce a H.264 mp4 video using HA, the next time I try to use HA I get a message telling me it failed and I need to update my graphics cards driver, update my Quich Time(which I did) or update my Windows Media player. I can render one time and attempt to do the exact same thing two minutes later and get a fail message. If I close and then re-open PD13 I can get my one time HA render back.

Any ideas?

Thanks

welcome.

' NVIDIA: GeForce 8500GT/9800GT and aboveGeForce GT/GTS/GTX 200/400/500/600 Series

PLEASE NOTE: For users of NVIDIA cards who have updated to graphics driver 340.43 or later, the video hardware acceleration feature in PowerDirector is no longer available. To re-enable hardware acceleration, please download and install an earlier driver. '

PD13 doesn't support HA. read above note again.

PD14 supports HA with GTX 960M with select drivers. will not work with 35x.xx drivers but 347.xx will.

Perhaps I mis-understood...I thought the driver issue were for the older cards....and I wonder why I can use HA one time if it isn't supported at all...

That statement is a subject that continues to cause confusion for many people.

My understanding is that the statement applies only to the older chipsets that are explicitly listed and the issue exists because nVidia removed CUDA support starting with driver version 340.43. All newer nVidia hardware uses nvenc and is unaffected. This sticky *nVidia CUDA encoder* thread is long, but it has all the specifics and gory details

My understanding is also based on having the nVidia card listed in my specs below and always having HA available with PD12, 13 and now 14. This has been true with every driver up to and including v355.98, which was just issued yesterday. With that driver installed, this is the relevant section of my Produce tab:

I think your post about errors and HA becoming unavailable will need some futher investigation, and we'll quite a bit more detail than the basic specs you've provided. Fortunately, it's very easy to do if you take a look at the *Welcome* sticky at the top of the forum index and please post Parts A and B and give us some specifics about your source clips as requested in Part J.

If you're running Win10 and using AVI source clips, you may want to look at the *Fix for AVI clip* sticky as well.

optodata, to clear up the confussion, post that same HA picture with PD12, I'd like to see that with V355.98. My guess, you can't, you won't have the option, it will be greyed out in PD12. I think what you will see is, yes you had it when you used PD12 in the release days, now you don't.

PD13 (later releases) and PD14 yes, it will work for your current GPU, a Kepler and current driver releases.

EDIT: My bad, I had looked across on a excel spreadsheet but was looking at PD11, not PD12.

Jeff, you have a good idea about maybe PD12 only working back in the day with the older drivers, but I have full HA right now with 355.98:

My error and mistake then on my guess. My GTX580, GTX650, GTX950, GTX960 and GTX970 all have no HA in PD11 with recent drivers wnd WIN7 and WIN10. A little suprised with the GTX780 but it is what it is. Points all the more to a true support table from CL on what capabilites PD supports with various GPU's.

Jeff

EDIT: Modified above to read PD11, I had skipped a line in my excel spreadsheet and had the wrong PD version.

I agree. Having some clear documentation on which hardware/GPU chipset/driver/PD version combos support which features would be really helpful.

There's a lot of info spread out across the forum and some individual threads have a lot of dense details, but having a single reference table or page (even if it isn't 100% complete or accurate to start) would be a good resource.

Just so you know, I tried 2 different clips, one a GoPro MP4 1080/30 fps and the other a 3640x 2160 shot with my Galaxy 5S. In both cases the Fast Video Render and Hardware encoding were avalible and checked.....but again one time only to use FVR and HA.

The reason I'm asking for help is that I made sure I had a half decent video card in my new laptop (I know the 960M is a middle of the ground model) because I wanted faster rendering.....and if it's not able to be used, I kind of wasted money on hardware....

Thanks for everbody's feedback

Thanks for the update. Your graphics card is clearly supported (otherwise you'd never get the FVR/HE option at all), but it's odd that it goes away after one produce session.

Obviously you can close PD13 each time, but as I mentioned in an earlier post, the best way to understand and try to fix the issue would be to run the DxDiag test and post the results along with attaching a couple of sample clips.

Often, that's all it takes for someone to find the problem and either post a fix or suggest a work-around.

Do I run the diag static, that is with no programs running or do I start PD13 first then run diag?

It doesn't matter. Just run it and the test will catalog all the drivers and relevant details of your system. When you post the results, we'll have a thorough understanding of how your system is configured.

OK. 4 things stand out right away, so take care of these and see how your PD behaves

  1. Your nVidia driver is 10 months old. Please visit nVidia.com and let the wizard find the latest version for your system. When you run the installer, chose custom and UNCHECK every box except for the graphics drivers. It's OK to leave GEForce Experience if you want it to run in the background and notify you of new drivers, but it's not needed

  2. Similarly, the drivers for your CPU's intgrated graphics (HD 4600) are more than a year out of date. Please visit intel.com and use the driver wizard there

  3. I can't tell if Windows Update is working correctly, but you should run that from the Settings | Update and Security tab and make sure that your system is fully up to date

  4. There have been several significant crashes (see the final couple of pages of the DxDiag results describing "Fault buckets") You should probably run Windows' System File Checker (SFC) and see if it can find any problems and automatically fix them. There are many posts on the forum, and you can just search for "SFC /scannow" and pull up the steps.

That should keep you busy for an hour or so, and when you're finished I'm betting things will work better for you. Either way, please let us know how everything goes.

Happy updating

Alright....got me some homework......
[Post New]
Update:

Downloaded latest driver for 960M - 355 I think...

Windows site says I have a custom Acer driver for my HD4600 and need to get driver from them

Acer says my HD4600 driver is the newest even though it's over 1 yr old..

Ran SFC - no issues found.......Here's the kicker

No I have NO fast video/HA available at all for any profile!.....I have no gone backwards...

Open to ideas?....thx

Sure. Update Quicktime to the latest version (quicktime.com) and run the DxDiag test again.

Are you running the latest patch for PD13, v3130?

OK. Since you've lost the HA box completely, try rolling back the nVidia driver from the Driver tab in Device Manager.

If that doesn't work (meaning you can't roll it back) try the 337.88 *driver* or maybe something a little more recent than your orginal driver, like *350.12*

See if any of these make a difference. Your QT is at 7.7.8, correct?

My guess is you are oscillating between the onboard HD4600 and your Nvidia and that creates your observation with HA encoding. Currently you are probably using windows drivers hence no HA that you observe. The Acer VN7-791G manuals I’ve found indicate they run Nvidia Optimus technology, have you customized Optimus for the PD14 executable to always use the High performance Nvidia processor? I'd caution against simply loading any graphic driver, most laptops use OEM custom modified drivers and often flag/reject/caution when trying to load vender drivers. I'd visit Acer and make sure you are current with what they recommend for your laptop as a starting point.
