Locks up every time on the Produce tab

Go to the Produce tab, but as soon as I click on something, it locks up immediately. Tried 5 times. Restarted and tried 5 times more. This is far from the most computer heavy project I've made. What's up?

If I just hit the Start button immediately, it will render fine. But it's stuck at .AVI by default, which won't do. Switching to other formats kills it.

Hi Davoo ,
For starters Video Editing is "resource heavy" and if you have a low end or a hardware failing unit - video editing software will show it up. You need to provide a few bits of info. see the guides, Part A, B, E & F and J.
Ok, Version used, Diagnostic of your PC, Screenshot of the Edit workspace with your project insitu, and the MediaInfo of the video being edited.

This DxDiag is a bit older, hopefully it still applies. I'll make a new one when I get back from work.

Davoo, your DxDiag file is from 6 months ago and it shows several problems. Before we start chasing down issues you may have already addressed, please run DxDiag again and post the new version.

Actually, before you do that you should make sure you have the latest video driver from Intel and then try uninstalling PD (including SmartSound and Quicktime) and reinstall them all. You'll need your license key. Then download the 3130 patch and update PD and see if that helps.

If not, run and post your new DxDiag results and we can proceed from there.

Aye aye. I'll get to that now, though I did do a new DxDiag first. So here it is just in case it's helpful.

That's OK. Also, there's no need to zip the results, just attach the text file directly.

You definitely need to update your video driver as yours is 16 months old, and your new results show many PD13 crashes instead of the ones regarding Windows Update in your earlier version.

Since these serious errors are still present, I think it's time to run the SFC test and see if Windows can repair the problems that have been causing these errors. Here's an earlier *post* showing the steps I think you should take. Since you don't have a separate GPU card, ignore everything there about nVidia.

Also, it looks like you're running Win 8, not 8.1. You'll definitely want to get these issues sorted out before upgrading to 8.1 or 10. With that said, if you find that neither SFC or the Refresh your PC option solve the crashing or Windows Update problems, the best choice in my opinion would be to do a stand-alone, full clean install of one of the newer versions of Windows rather than installing Win 8 from scratch.

Let us know how the SFC process turns out.

What's really frustrating is the Intel driver update software isn't working. It scans my drivers, and doesn't say any of them need updating.

And I'm sure there's some software that fixes the Intel Updater software, but then 90% of the time *that* software won't work, so then I have to install a software to fix the fixer software and it all comes tumbling down, and I'm on my deathbed, having spent 89 years fixing convoluted computer problems just so I can do some very simple project.

My point is, thank you enormously for the help but is there a way to do juuuust enough to get the rendering to work? I don't know what SFC even means, and I fear all sorts of problems that could occur if I update windows. I just want to be able to render this video.

I completely understand, and I didn't mean to throw a bunch or jargon at you.

Here are 2 simple steps to get you closer to editing again:

  1. This *link* will give you the latest Intel video drivers for your 64-bit desktop computer. Download it, then double-click to install it. If you have any problems, try right-clicking on the file and choose Run as Administrator

  2. SFC is a built-in Windows command that stands for System File Checker. Its job is to verify that all the important files that Windows needs to operate are valid and present. When you run it, it will automatically try to repair any problems it finds, but sometimes it will find problems that are beyond its ability to repair. Even if it comes back with a message that it found errors but could not repair them, you can try running it again to see if another pass can get them fixed. The steps to run this command are clearly listed in this *post* so please take a look at that and see if that's something you feel OK trying. You can't harm your computer by doing this.

As I said, each of these will get you closer, but given the severity of your issues it may take more work to get your computer in good enough shape to edit again.

For now, please do these 2 steps and let's see where we're at afterwards.

I'd say it's time to start over.

Grab the latest ISO image of Win 8.1 or Win 10 from Microsoft or ask a friend to help you do a clean install. A fresh start will only take a couple hours and all these problems will be behind you...

I'm glad you were able to get back to editing!

The problems with your computer are serious, and my advice is to take care of them when you have some time and not wait until they come back to bite you in the middle of a project. I've been there, and it's no funyell
