Can't enable HW Encoding for H.265 with new GTX 960 card

I just bought an EVGA GTX 960 card and am running some tests to compare it to my 780Ti. (I'll post them soon)

I'm producing to 1080/60p M2TS and so far, they're essentially equal - but I can't get the "Fast video rendering technology:" or the "Hardware video encoder" boxes on the Produce page to be active no matter what I do. The boxes are active for H.264 and XAVC S (MP4 27Mbps) for both cards, but I was expecting to be able to use the HW encoder for the 960 (or any 9xx cards).

I'm using the latest nVidia drivers (specifically released for the 960) and all the HW acceleration boxes are checked in PD13. I've tried enabling and disabling the HD 4600 graphics for my i7 but that doesn't make any difference.

Am I jumping on the H.265 bandwagon too soon to expect H.265 HW encoding from PD and/or nVidia's driver? I know there have been a bunch of threads regarding H.265 but I haven't seen any that discuss these checkboxes.

I have the same indications as you with my 770. Must be an NVIDIA thing.

It's actually a different situation. Only the GTX 9xx series cards have hardware H.265 encoders built in, and only the 960 has a hardware H.265 decoder. That's why I bought this card.

None of the previous cards have anything beyond H.264, so you'll never see the hardware video encode option with your 770 when producing to H.265. Same with my 780Ti, but to have a new card with that hardware sitting there and not being able to access it is really frustrating

I wonder if SoNice is having the same problem???
SoNice purchased the GTX960, too.
where are you?

I've posted this on 'production unsuccessful...' post
try this below.

' well ladies,
I've found the answer to my own question.

in order for me to get rid of the 'production unsuccessful, yada, yada, yada...' and to get the HA back,
I had to further modify the Cyberlink registry of my 3 years old Dell XPS L702X laptop.

WARNING - messing with registry is bad for your wallet, proceed with extreme caution at your own peril.
me, myself and I isn't responsible or the Cyberlink of your mutated DNA(your non-responding computer).
do not blame my poor grammar, either.

alright then,
now we got that warning statement out of the way...

under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cyberlink\CES_FunctionLogger\Data

is Powerdirector 12 registry folder.
in that folder is EnableHardwareDecode REG_BINARY 01 00 00 00 and
GPGPUSupport REG_BINARY 01 00 00 00.

I've changed to EnableHardwareDecode REG_BINARY 00 00 00 00 and
GPGPUSupport REG_BINARY 00 00 00 00.

the result is now I have HA and no production unsuccessful message!
wa ha, ha, ha... (evil and sinister laugh echoing...)

oh yeah, one more thing.
my PD12 is build 3403.
Intel HD 3000 driver 8.15.10.2455 and nVidia driver 285.77.
my video drivers are still 3 years old...

wa ha, ha, ha... (evil and sinister laugh echoing...) '

My card waited to be shipped 3 days in the New Jersey snow
Order it on 26, actually left NJ on 30, after bouncing between Secaucus and Saddle Brook for a couple times. It is supposed to arrive Monday.

I actually asked about future support here on forum, before I bought it, exactly because I am expecting those features NOT to work right away. They are too new, for example GTX960 is supported only by the latest nVidia driver! Dafydd offered to pass the question to CL.

Yep, I have passed on the question posed, so far no reply... I have followed it up.

Yep, that's the downside of online shopping

I was able to pick mine up at my local store and I even had it for a couple of days before I had time to do the testing, but that's when the "not quite supported" surprise hit.

It's true that the 960 was just released and it's the only card with both H.265 encoder AND decoder in the silicon, but the 970 and 980 cards have been out for months and they have H.265 hardware encoders (which is all we'd be using for production), and I didn't realize that PD wasn't supporting them yet either.

Meanwhile, all of my testing so far shows that my new $200 GTX 960 performs just as well as my 1-year-old (and $800) 780Ti. The production times are within a couple seconds of each other on a project that takes around 13 minutes for H.264 and about 15 minutes in H.265, so it's clearly a winner in the performance and value department.

Based on what I've seen so far, this would probably be my pick for building a new editing system or upgrading an older video card to get a big performance boost. I expect it will get even better when the on-board encoder gets utilized.

However, I don't need to spend $200 just to get to where I'm already at, and I'll probably just return it and wait another year (or more) for a newer design that'll have enough of an improvement to make it worth buying. Anything that can cut 13 minutes down to 10 or less is definitely going to get my attention (and $$$)

Or you can sell the 780Ti for at least $350 on eBay

Hi,

One cause for not being able to "Enable hardware encoding" checkbox for me was because I had used another application, which very likely kind of reserved the feature from my graphics cars. Once I quit the other application and restarted Powerdirector, I had the feature enabled (again). I was getting pretty frustrated because I felt the feature was available randomly regardless of any settings.
