Hi all, thanks Dafydd here's my post as a new topic.

I also one who is having dreadful trouble with my new PD13 (upgraded from PD11 which ran perfectly.) I have a brand new custom made (for Cyberlink) intel i7-3770 CPU, with 16GB Ram, andand AMD Radeon HD7800 series PC with TONS of memory in it. 1TB memory, with 600 Gb free. (I have no idea what most of that stuff does, but I DO know that it was custom built to take the cyberlink program.) It has Win 7 which I prefer.
I have Color Director 3 64 bit that came with the PD13 Ultimate suite.
It is the combination of ColorDirector/Fix/Enhance button adjustments that I THINK are causing my problems.

>I work in 30 minute blocks of clips, so it's nothing too huge. I am editing AVCHD home movie from a Pan TM900.
>All importing etc seems fine. My problem is with the playing/viewing window, and adding fix/ehancements, which include round trip to color editor occasionally.
>I view at the middle setting, High Resolution. Only occasionally looking at it from a higher res.
>I have only 20- 30 clips in my library at once. Coming directly from the folder on my desktop (not an EHD)
>The total time on line at moment is only ~19 mins.

1. Worst prob: when I play a clip to check my new enhancement (back from ColorDirector, or straight from Fix/enhance) it begins fine 3 secs., then slows, jitters, jumps, it seems to split the audio...which keeps playing at the normal speed and from the proper place, from the video..which freezes...but the red 'cursor' line keeps jumping waaaay ahead to the very end, the last clips, and stops there. The audio is still playing from 10 minutes up the timeline and the video has frozen at the very end - where it is not supposed to be and where the cursor now is. (See picture of this attached.) Window viewer shows scene that is NOT where the cursor is on the timeline, is frozen, and is still playing the correct audio.
I can't monitor any of my changes as it generally jumps before too long. 5 seconds usually, sometimes 10 but by then too distorted.

2. it has frozen and/or crashed during the above process multiple times.

3. I'm interested in presets, because my footage is often the wrong white balance. I have been using CD3 to 'round trip edit'. Making a preset that I could use for the next few clips in the timeline. However, in saving the clip, it does not appear in my created presets when Back to PD13. To make it appear, I have to turn off PD13, then turn on again. So it is saving, just not the way it should.

These problems do not seem to occur on clips that have not had some Fix/Enhance applied. I haven't gotten to the heavy duty stuff like Modify masks or titles, or any power tools yet!!

I've uninstalled, and reinstalled, and applied the last patch (not the beta) and have 13.0.2123.0.
PD11 worked perfectly.

Screenshot attached of workspace. the video in the viewer has frozen. the audio is still running from 10 minutes earlier (where it should be) and the red cursor line has jumped many minutes to stop at the end of the last clip.!

I'm beat! No point in going any further as I can't check any of my enhancements, or add any without this happening.

EXTRA: have just noticed another anomaly with Fix/enhance.
I have a clip highlighted, I'm in Fix Enhance screen, I move the cursor line backwards or forwards on the same clip (too see what it looks like or to find a position where I can monitor the adjustment) but the Fix/enhance screen disappears and the last used gallery, from the left side - either title, media, fx...or whatever, comes up in it's place.

This is definitely a Fix/enhance button problem,...definitely, probably, maybe....

mmm. Interesting. Just also noticed it jumps to end of last clip every time I press Pause (usually because it's misbehaving), on clips that have Fix/Enhance/colordirector effect on them. Jenny

This appears to be a similar problem to that experienced in PD12, which I believe is software related. I also have a hi-spec machine, but PD12 exhibits similar problems to yours, which I find is simply overcome by reducing the review quality down to 'normal'.

For some reason in my experience these CyberLink editing suites just cannot handle any of the better, or HD quality previews, where enhancements and effects are applied; the more effects there are, then the worse the preview becomes, unfortunately.

My usual workflow, to overcome this problem in PD12, is to preview any playback in 'normal' and only select 'HD' when viewing an important stationary frame or two. High quality previews of more complex edits, especially with higher bitrate files, can only be viewed by rendering!

Thanks for your reply, however this is not the problem.
I habitually look at my viewer in High mode (the one above normal), have done since PD11. However, this problem is not just 'jittery' playback as experienced when putting the viewer into a higher mode, but complete breakdown of the viewing sequence, ie: the audio and video timing seem to split, where the audio keeps playing the video begins to freeze and ultimately the video (with audio still playing) jumps to the end of the last clip and stops. Typically the viewer is still showing a frame from somewhere around where it WAS playing, but the cursor is on the end of the last clip.

I have tested it at lower viewing resolutions,s uch as the normal you suggested, no difference, still occurred. Along with all the other anomalies.

however, adding to your comment that the editing suite cannot cope with the viewing resolutions....I wonder why cyberlink bother to put the higher res viewers in at all...since they have been pathetic since PD11, and seem pointless, if you can't monitor your sequence in HD, which presumably the clip has been shot in.

papido France: I'd be interested to hear your description of your problem, see if it's the same... what have you experienced?

I am at a loss to explain this behaviour or how to fix it. I can't edit anything, since the clips I am doing at the moment require Fix/Enhance color balance,

Hello to all,

I have to indicate that my troubles of reading on the editing table were bound(connected) to the parameter " Resolution of overview in full house HD " (continuation of the audio but frost(gel) of the video and successive catching(making) up); with " Resolution of overview HD " the reading is fluid. On certain projects with " Regulation of colors ", it is necessary to come down(to fall) in a lower resolution (in " High resolution of overview, the reading is fluid in every case).

The indication of your equipment would be maybe useful.

I understand. Your video and audio are splitting too, when you are playing clips with colour regulation.

I have also experienced this in PD11, and always look at my sequence in Normal or High. Never HD.
However, in PD13, the problem is MUCH worse. Audio splitting from video at every Enhanced clip, video freezing completely and cursor jumping many minutes forward to the very end and stopping, while audio continues. Very annoying, frustrating. Can't edit anything. I can't imagine it is my equipment, as it's pretty damn good.!!
(Plus, it has to be said, if I can't use it on my customised PC, I can't imagine very many 'ordinary' people are going to be able to do this on their PCs. If you need a tank to drive the program, what's the point?)

My best advise that has work for me. Is to edit the your clips first or cut them. Then do the Fix and Enhancing. Then I do a preview render. I now it takes time, but I have play with the high dollar editing software and I have to do the same thing with them to play them back smooth in preview.

I order the part yesterday to build a i7-5960X Haswell-E 8-Core computer. I want to see how that makes a difference. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

What I am about to say is not a solution, only a comment, what I have learned to (been forced to) do while editing in PD –
regardless of any release number or specs of my current computers.

I always pre-edit and pre-produce bits and pieces.
The bits may be 1-3 min long. Edit- means when using 4 > >……. tracks, enhancement of some sort,
maybe power tooling something. All kinds of different stuff may happen/occur with PD I have
experienced over the years. Some choose to save projects by number continuously, I pre-render.
I guess it’s something similar to what Michael 8511 is saying.
(Unlike Michael, I very seldom experience anything like PD’s behavior(s) in “high end dollar” NLEs.)

It’s hard to figure out PD. You close it for the evening- next day odd things happen.
Suddenly, it doesn’t like your hardware, your graphic card, your OS, the format of your clips,
the bitrate of your clips, mp3’s or another software you installed.
Very often people have been told there is not enough power in their setup, but these odd things
happen with people with very powerful rigs- and you are absolutely right in saying
“If you need a tank to drive the program, what's the point?”

In PD, using enhancements / effects trough longer clips have always made the program struggle,
in my experience. Some of the NB effects demands a lot. Adding to that the use of several tracks one
will get different “happenings” – hence my workflow of pre-rendering.
In the marketing of PD13 CL flags the possibility to edit MultiCam over 100 tracks.
For that (if needed by anyone on earth) one surely would need a tank.

I have a love / hate relationship with PD13. I finally got my PD11 to work perfectly (because I got a massive upgrade in hardware), and now?? ppppttththh!

Yes, I fear background software, even time of day, can affect the CL program.
Sadly for me I bought the PD13 ESPECIALLY for the Photodirector, the round trip editing, the effects and enhancements, and the new speed. Unfortunately also for me, none of these new improvements seem to work either properly or well.
I can't imagine millions of regular people having THAT much of a better PC than me, since my upgrade, and that being the case, why would an ordinary person with only a 'fairly good - good' setup by this software?

I have also tinkered with pre-rendering pieces of my 30 minute home movies. First, I downsized my chunks to 30 minutes, as that seemed sensible. Second, any time I put in photos, I prerender them as slideshows. However, I stopped short of actually pre-rendering bits of the actual movie/music/titles etc,....as I am a bit finicky about exporting the packed project. I feel like I MUST protect the project in it's entirety incase I want to do something with it later. So If I prerender, won't that prevent the 'pieces' of the rendered bits (eg title templates, particles etc) being transported in the export? (because they're part of a previous render project?)

So....My problems still remain.
1. If I use Fix/Enhance - then try to view my change at anything more than 'normal' resolution (which is pretty hopeless)
a) the audio splits from the video
b) the video slows and slows...until
c) the video freezes with the audio still going and
d) the cursor jumps to the last clip and stops (with the audio still going and a the last played bit of video frozen on the monitor)
2. If I have a clip highlighted, I'm in Fix Enhance screen, I move the cursor line backwards or forwards on the same clip, the Fix/enhance screen disappears and the last used gallery, from the left side - either title, media, fx...or whatever, comes up in it's place. Very weird.
3. Frozen and crashed multiple times during above processes.

Jenny, here’s my workflow:

All my assets for the video are located in 1 ( one) folder somewhere.
Within I have separate folders for images, raw clips, pre-produced clips and what I
I call “sections”. Usually, I have at least 2 – sometimes 3-4 project files of the same
video in work. (Never open more than 1 at a time!)
In the main project, I produce range in 1-3 min bits.
I keep doing this, and if PD is cooperative I might have a full project in this main project.
If not, I have the pre-produced bits. I work on them in a 2. project file and produce sections.
I have to be aware of where I begin/end the sections because in the end they have to
connect seamlessly, and this is usually in a 3. project file.

You have the option to “Pack Project” and save the project+assets somewhere – maybe
on an external device. If PD is working ok and you have the full video done in a main
project, then all is well and you pack the lot. To be on the safe side you can work on
a few minutes and pack those minutes – if you don’t want to pre-produce (or both).

You can also start a new project – do that piece for piece 2-5 min duration and then
in the end combine the project-bits to 1 by “insert project”. If the video has a duration
of let’s say 30 min and you have a fair share of enhancements, effects and transitions
in there you will perhaps still encounter problems with pre-view and/or production.

Have in mind this is my workflow.
It may seem a lot of extra, unnecessary work – but it is a way of working with
PD I have adapted over the years to avoid grief and frustration as much as possible.

Wow Nina, that's a complex workflow, and all credit to you for being so organised!!
I thought I was picky, having all my bits and pieces in separate folders.
I've never noticed "produce range", what is that?? I just went in to have a look and can't see it...If it's button that just produces within the same project, then that would sort part of the situation, in that the pieces for the project are all in the library for export eventually. (a bit like when you produce a slideshow within PD)

My main issue with prerendering is still the export, I want it all in one folder, in one place, at one time. It's the way I catalogue my home movies,...so there's no chance the chronology and video names can get mixed up. I thought that my system of producing 30m at a time was being fussy....especially since the system is designed to do hours, not just minutes.

Exporting aside, I still can't believe this is 'normal' for PD13. Really???? I knew it was normal for PD9 when I had it back c 2005? Then when I got PD11 a couple of years ago, I fought with it for a while until I upgraded my pc. Fair enough. But really?? Still? and worse I'd say.

There's no point adding mag wheels/turbo engine/lowered suspension and extractors to a Toyota that will only go 80kmph, The additions will never work the way they're supposed to.
.....there's no point adding bells and whistles to software that won't work effortlessly on even GOOD computer systems. They'll never work the way they're supposed to.

I hope Cyberlink are listening. Fix this Enhance/Fix stuff. Pllleeaaaasssse.
I still hope someone has a solution.

"produce range" is where you grab the yellow handles on the scrubber
and position it to whatever you want.
- The 1 folder I mentioned, where all my assets are, this is a working folder.
When done with a video, I organize afterwards what/where.

I was working with PD 13 yesterday some. I have been working slow on a project on and off for the last few months I shot in Sept. I have some clips I shoot of a dance that was in a fluorescent light room. I have the white balance in the camera set to fluorescent. But I still when in to PD 13 Fix and Enhancing to check the white balance out. It seen a little sluggish doing that. I got the win 7 circle or new hour glass come up in there. I have not use PD 13 that much after it came out. I have been busy doing other things around the house.

I have read where Tony has said it uses more resources. I started using PD at version 10. I think Cyberlink needs to maybe put more time in to development and testing before they release a new one. I do like the fact that they added the h265 in this one. I will have more time to work with it as winter is on it's coming on. Intel i7 5960X overclock to 4 Ghz 16 GB of ram.

Nina, I'm trying your workflow...well an amended style of it, as I was in the middle of my project when I wrote this post.

Now I'm pre-producing parts of the video. I'm using the 'range' produce, as you suggested.
I had difficulty producing the 'range' due to jittery video. Funny, if I cut the rest of the video and 'save as' a new project ..ie part 1. the project is not jittery. I think it had something to do with 'shadow files'. The shadow file setting has been unchecked, and seems better. (so annoying, I've been very confused by the jittery outputs).

Anyway, producing in parts.
Hoping I can get them all together in a new project, AND end up with all the assets in the project...maybe have to use the original one to do the packing.

I've had a lot of difficulty with this particular project. Its disappointing.
At the moment, one 10 minute sequence has taken 1 hour 22 minutes (and is at 86%)
There was not much svrt, only 5% but a lot of the clips had colour director, enhancements etc. But really?? 1.5hrs for 10 minutes seems rather extreme. Hasn't mattered what I did, still super slow.

Oh well, your workflow seems to be working for this very annoying project. Jenny

Hi Jenny,

First; I never use shadow files.

Then;
The “main project” file is the one I start off working with.
But as we know, all kinds of incidents may happen - that’s why I pre-produce bits.
If I have a project only 6-12 min long and not use too many tracks, PD might do well
without hickups and I will be good for the whole project. Even so, I will have pre-produced
a part of two, especially if I have used some effects, pips and/or titles.

Jenny; I very seldom use the “canned” options, and if I do, I usually customize /modify them.
Often I use several .pngs as overlays; it may be frames, text or “items”. I also often use
background footage for the .pngs- or for pip footage. This means using several tracks and “heavy”
use of Modify window, which again has contributed to the workflow I have.
Sometimes PD can manage.......sometimes not. Not to loose 2-3 hours work, I pre-produce.
1,5 hour for 10 min sequense do not at all seem extreme to me, Jenny.
It all depends what our demand is for a project and what we are editing.
It’s not uncommon I work 15-20 hours on a 10 min sequense- just to get it “right” and be
satisfied with the production. Remember; we are not professionals- although I do think
professionals work on their videoproductions for many hours.

I am editing as we speak, so more questions?

thanks Nina! I understand now.

No, when I said 1.5 hours, I mean it's taking 1.5 hours to render the 10 minute sequence. There is the odd title, fade, etc, but plenty of colourdirector use, and video enhancement. I think this is what is taking the time....but 1.5 hours?? for only 10 minutes? That seems a l0ong time to render to me.

I spend hours and hours editing. I don't think I'm as talented as you, you have made some beautiful frames etc, I think PDToots gave me one recently (that is you, right? who made the frames?)
I love it.

But PD13 has been very difficult for me so far. I've come from PD11.
This latest project has a few .mov files from my son's iphone, combined with m2ts files from my camcorder. Some are std def and mine are 50i. I think this has mucked up my editing suite a little. I've had dreadful problems with jittery production.

So....the settings.I have deselected shadow files in General,

but some I am unsure if they are affecting my jittery production....
General: enable HD video processing? I have this checked.
hardware Acceleration: Enable Open CL technology.... I have this checked???
Enable Hardware decoder > I have this checked??? but hardware decoder on Produce screen is greyed out??why?
In Produce: reduce blocky artifacts - checked.
Reduce video noise - checked
>allow SVRT on single IDR... - deselected.??? what does this mean??

I am not sure which settings to check and which to uncheck.
I usually work in HD, 50i and sometimes 50p (this time it's a combo of std def and high def though)
I have a good graphics card, amd radeon HD 7800series, and an i7 processor, lots of memory and it's a fairly good setup.

So I'm not sure why render of this project is soooooio slow, and why it's often coming out jittery.
Wonder if you can help? Jenny
