After a lot of research on what would be the best Video Editing Software, I downloaded the 30 day trial of Cyberlink PowerDirector Unltra 12, only to find that I am unable to import my video into the system. It seems to not recognize my Canon Vixia HF S21. Is that possible?

habb,
welcome to the volunteer forum.
Your Canon is a flash drive camera, so it will be "seen" as a drive letter in your computer.
Capture is for tape cameras, and a few other formats, but NOT flash.
Using Windows, not PD, attach the camera via usb as the Canon instructions detail.
Hit the transfer button on your camera. I think that will start the process, I don't have my HF21 anymore.
Browse to the drive (it might even say CANON).
Find the STREAM folder for video files, or for photos it would be DCIM.
Copy or cut and paste from the camera flash drive, to your desired drive on your computer.
Or...
if you have the files on the camera's SD card, simply pop that into a card reader and look for those same folders.

Well. I didn't expect such a quick & concise response. Exactly what I was looking for. Just started the process & it seems to be working...I'll update you when (if?) it's complete. I have always used Pinnacle & while it does the job, it always seems quirky & a little unstable. How does this product compare with Pinnacle, if you are familiar with that? All I am looking for is something that is stable & fast & the reviews say this one is just that. Hope they are right.

A BIG THANK YOU for your help!!!
I was just about to move on & look for something else.

If the Canon shows up as a Drive, shouldn't the last option work: Capture from an external or optical device?

No, that is not the way.

Copy your video to a folder on your hard drive.

Open PowerDirector > File > Import > Media Files

Or click the folder icon (tool tip says Import Media).

Isn't the only way a camera can be used for direct capture in PD12 via Firewire? Win 7 64 Home Premium on an AMD 1090Tx6 @ 3.2ghz, 16gb of ram, dual 500gb drives, AMD Radeon 770 w/ 1gb.

Can I edit clips one by one like in Pinnacle?
Pinnacle shows two side-by-side widows of the same clip & allows me to shorten the clip at both ends before moving it to the timeline.
I can't do that in PowerDirector?

My Canon Legria HFR406 came with Transfer Utility LE which allows direct export from the SD card to the PC.

I have never used any utility, from Canon, or anyone else, to transfer my files from my flash-based cameras, I never saw the need, still don't. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Nor, do I.

I have a internal Card Reader, I just plug the SD card in the card slot and transfer the files in the "Stream" folder.
