PowerDirector keeps hanging on my project during disc creation

Hi there,

I have a wedding project (call "Sami") I've about 40 hours of editing work done on. I have been doing editing, DVD creation (both standard and AVCHD) without any issues. I went back and corrected a few things in the video, and now I am having issues. Although I am able to use "Produce" to render a video, the "Create Disc" option has quit working ("PowerDirector 12 is not responding"). I get this even when trying to "Create a folder" option under create disc. The issue occurs whether I've enabled hardware acceleration or not. When I go back to an older version of the project from 3 days ago, I experience the same lockup when trying to create a disc folder set.

When I pack the "Sami" project up and copy it over to my laptop, and then try to open it. I get a "CyberLink PowerDirector" dialog referencing a sound file that was part of my project. Options are Ignore, Browse, and Ignore All. For whatever reason, this file wasn't included in the packed project. When I click Ignore, the program locks up. This occurred during the "Checking Menu Settings (10%). Updating title profile settings..."
Here are the specs on the problematic computer (desktop):
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel i7-2600 @ 3.4Ghz, 10GB of RAM, GeForce GT 530 (331.58 driver), 320GB of free disk space on system volume. PowerDirector Ultimate 12.0.2230.0

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Dafydd,

Thanks so much for your assistance here - I really appreciate it. I will give the beta a try, and get back to you.

Regarding the missing of the audio file, I think I know what it is. I think there's a bug with PD including the media file used in the menu of the create disc, when doing the pack project. If I remove the audio file from the project prior to packing it on the desktop, and then open it on the laptop, it works fine.

Information on the file in question ("Good life.WAV") - this file was an extraction from a video file, using PD. MediaArea.net says
General
Complete name : C:\Users\Lowell\Videos\2013-09-15 - 2013-09-15 Sami & Dustyn Wedding\Good life.WAV
Format : Wave
File size : 2.81 MiB
Duration : 15s 362ms
Overall bit rate mode : Constant
Overall bit rate : 1 536 Kbps

Audio
Format : PCM
Format settings, Endianness : Little
Format settings, Sign : Signed
Codec ID : 1
Duration : 15s 362ms
Bit rate mode : Constant
Bit rate : 1 536 Kbps
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Stream size : 2.81 MiB (100%)

You will find the dxdiags from both computers attached. You'll also find a screenshot of the edit on the source computer. I will also provide 2 more screen shots in an ensuing follow-up.

Okay, I've installed 12.0.2405.0 Beta on the desktop computer.

Screenshot attached.

As for the other issue (missing disc music in pack file), I repacked on the source computer (having the 2405 beta) copied over to laptop, and experienced the same problem. Note that I did NOT update the laptop to the 2405 beta.

Menu items are not retained in a "Pack Project Materials.." export process as well as many other things. You used the Good life.WAV in your DVD menu. You would need to move that file, C:\Users\Lowell\Videos\2013-09-15 - 2013-09-15 Sami & Dustyn Wedding\Good life.WAV , to the other computer manually.

Hi Jeff, and thank you for your response. Yes, we're finding that we may have a bug here, given the defined feature doesn't include all media files as it should.

Product feature documentation:
Exporting Projects
You can export your CyberLink PowerDirector projects by writing them to a DV
tape, or by packing all the materials in a folder on your computer's hard drive.
Exported projects can then be imported into another computer running CyberLink
PowerDirector.
To export your project to a DV tape select File > Export > Write to DV Tape. To
export it to a folder, select File > Pack Project Materials.

While we wait for the analysis of the root problem (that I can no longer get my client's wedding video to DVD), I'm attempting to migrate over to another computer to see if I have any better luck. Hence, the finding of the other issue where the program hangs on the missing file. Jeff, you mention that the export process doesn't retain menu items - as well as "other things" - do you have any documentation on what "other things" so I don't miss them?

Also, does anyone know how to get a custom-designed menu template from 1 computer to the other, other than through the directorzone upload/download process?

Bug, debatable. The menu is not part of the project and has not been for any release of PD. Limitation, yes, bug, questionable. There are many other things it does not pack either. Basically, it assembles all the video/audio/pics used in the timeline, that's it. Exact menu or custom pic used in a menu, not packed either.

Jeff, thank you again for your chiming in. As a new user of this product, I have to say I absolutely love it over another product I've been using for a while. I certainly mean no offense, but I'm not certain there's really a debate here. The product documentation clearly states the ability to export a project, the packing of all the materials to enable importing into another computer. Nowhere are there exclusions that say it only applies to the edit pane of the product. If you, or any others, have become apathetic to accepting the product as is, then I certainly do respect your decision. However, this being a great product, and with my being in somewhat of a bind to finish up 2 wedding videos within the next week that I have more than 80 hours of time into, I'm just trying to use the documented features to continue to the project on another computer. We might be able to isolate the issue here and potentially solve the problem. If you want to call it a feature enhancement, then sure, we can do that. I'm just trying to work around some issues using the documented features, while avoiding the distractions.

thank you sir - hokieinidaho

Hi Dafydd,

Here is some more information that may be useful. I was able to successfully get the video over to the other computer (laptop), after having removed the excluded menu sound file ("Good life.wav") prior to the pack process at the source. I also was able to get the menu theme over to the laptop using the directorzone export/import. I ran into similar motion generator crashes on the laptop, so now I am trying something different. I'm scrapping the menu design and trying a burn without any menus.

Stay tuned, and thanks again!

You highlighted it, "project", as I said the menu is not part of the "project". Your custom menus are easily moved and are at
\Users\USERNAME\Documents\CyberLink\Custom Menus , yes you manually move them to the other computer, they are not part of any export or any packing process. The are numerically incremented for every custom menu you saved.

Apathetic to accepting as is, you have no idea the efforts many have put in to make the program or user support better and continue to put in. I gave you the exact reason you received the missing music issue and exactly why, just so you could continue with your critical DVD.

Good Luck
Jeff

Hi Dafydd,

Here's what I was able to determine. I went with clearing the menus (no menu) and here are the results
- on the desktop (running beta) burning a regular DVD to file resulted in program hang
- on the desktop burning an AVCHD to file actually worked
note that both options above were without hardware acceleration - I'm attempting again with it turned on just for kicks

- on the laptop (12.0.2230.0) I was able to burn to file DVD, as well as AVCHD (without acceleration) and I'm currently burning AVCHD again with acceleration

Thanks again for your assistance.

If it was me on your desktop I'd try your DVD to a folder without the "Smart Fit" that you currently have selected in your previous attached pic, if PD thinks your project is larger than 4.7GB, change that DVD drop down to 8.5GB and the do the "Create a folder" option for the burn and see what luck you have. Use no hardware acceleration as well.

Thanks Jeff. I gave that a try, and I got the same thing. Program locks up.

Over on the laptop, I tried a very basic menu (default one for PD) and it bombed out the MotionMenuGeneratior Application. So at this point, it looks like the only thing I can do, is resort to what I've always had to do in Roxio (Ack!) and produce a video file, and reimport in to do the menus.

Well, this isn't good. I took the AVCHD stream that was output as a work-around, and brought in back in to PD to make the chapters and attempt the creation of DVD.

On both computers, when I hit <Create Disc> the program hangs.
- on the desktop, I got to 57% on the "Checking Menu Settings / Updating title profile settings
- on the laptop, I got to 23% on the same dialog.

I'm in dismay, and really heart-broken on this. I'm not sure what to do at this point, other than try to salvage the video by bringing it into Roxio to finish the project.

Minor breakthrough - I went back and did <produce>, imported that file, and did the menus & DVD burn.

This is how I solved it: disable Smartfit (by switching to another option), set all other preferred options, re-enable Smartfit (if desired), burn disc.
