Menu Highlight With No Thumbnail

Maybe this has already been posted, but I can't find it!
Is there a way to remove the motion thumbnail and have text only in the Menu Designer? I am creating a live bluegrass recording of my band and I want the Titles/Chapters page to have only text (for the names of the songs) with no thumbnails, as the thumbnails all look the same when it's a band on stage. Also I would like the text (names of the songs) to be able to highlight, that way I could put 6 or 8 songs on each page.
So basically what I want is the Titles/Chapters page to have highlighted text with no thumbnails!
Thank you so much!

G'day John -

Senior contributor Jeff (JL_JL) first posted a no thumbnail menu a few years back - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/153239

Since then, many variations have been made
http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/117978059
http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131975124
http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/124375458 and etc

You could download & install any of the above & modify it to suit your purposes.

Thank you ynotfish.

However, I've ran into another problem! PD12 stops working if I try to edit any of these menus, after I've downloaded them from Director Zone. I can make changes to the menu designs but when I click "Save" and "Ok" I get the message "PDR12.exe has stopped working". The menus that came with PD12 work fine. I just having problems with downloaded menus.

I have the same problem ... editing a KISS menu is death to Power Director 12.
Still need a simple menu ... I want a simple background with 14 topics to choose from and don't want the auto-thumbnail revealing the slides to the audience early.

Hi Tiberius & John -

I recall I had similar "stopped working" issues when editing KISS menus in PD11. My issue was specifically related to adding customised buttons.

Is your crash occurring after any specific action? or can it occur when doing any modification?

That issue is gone now. Editing KISS menus in PD11 or 12 (here at least) causes no issues.

Cheers - Tony

Good morning,

The KISS of death occurs if I open the menu and :
a) only change the font of the title to one of the normally released 'Character Presets' and try to save
b) only change the button to one of the normally released 'Navigation Buttons' and try to save
c) just try to save it again without making any modifications.

Notes:
a) I am running PD12 Ultra ... patched to rev 2230 (latest and greatest)
This is a clean install ... just bought the software yesterday - 11/10/2013
Only previous version of PD was trial version which I evaluated with no custom downloads for about a week.
b) I can use the KISS 14 menu as is and save the project without a problem.
c) I can use the KISS 14 menu as is to create DVD image without a problem

Opening the KISS 14 menu with 'Modify' and then 'Saving' will cause a problem regardless whether the user modifies something trivial or in fact makes no modifications at all.

BTW: Cyberlink gets major credits in my book just for reading their e-mail and responding - and very quickly too. Thank you very much. I am impressed.

Thanks

Just tried DVD with standard KISS 14 menu in my LG DVD player
The 'Play' button text stays on the screen
The DVD starts late (~14 minutes into Chapter 1)
--- arghhh

Here are the menus that I tried with no luck at all:

KISSII
KISS Blue
K.I.S.S. 14
K.I.S.S. Gold 3
Earth10
Earth10_2

I do not have to even try to change anything at all for PD12 to crash. I click Modify and do not make any changes at all. If I click Save As and then type a name and click OK, PD12 crashes (PDR12.exe has stopped working).

Does anyone know if there is a way to create a new template without the thumbnails?

Thanks,

Hi John & Tiberius -

I'm at a bit of a loss because I can't replicate the problem here, & I can't see a reason for those menus to be failing or causing issues. Obviously, there's a cause - we just can't see it yet. Here, I've thrown everything at many of the KISS menus to try to make them fall over, but I've had no luck.

I understand it doesn't help you one little bit to read "it works for me" and I'm sorry. I'm sorry I put menus up that are giving you grief.

I've tested dozens of them - including the one Papido mentioned here - http://forum.cyberlink.com/forum/posts/list/30655.page#168332 - http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131582471 - burnt & tested DVDs in 3 different players but can't make them fail or find a cause.

During my testing, just now, I ran the screen capture for part of it. What you see is just what happened - http://youtu.be/iZ0Ru3RS5es

We may have to consult a higher authority!

Cheers - Tony

John - I forgot to respond to your question: Does anyone know if there is a way to create a new template without the thumbnails? I don't! All I've done is what you're trying to do - modify someone else's menu... & 98% of the time that's gone without a hitch.

Yippe, Hallalujah, Shout, Scream, Great Scott!!!!!!!!!!

It worked! Thank you so much for you help!

I just tried http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131582471 and it worked. Renamed it with my own style of template and now I have my own that I can work with.

Must have been a bug in those other ones but this one does work.

Again, thanks to everyone for helping me out.
Gotta go.... I got some videos to edit.

Just want to tell Tiberius Nero to give a try to http://directorzone.cyberlink.com/detail/131582471

I've been trying for quite a while and even did a complete system recovery over the weekend. This templated worked.
Let me know if it works for you. Other than that, I'm not much help. If something works for me I'm ok but if it don't I usually don't even know where to start.

Cheers, Let me know!

Glad to hear that you are fixed.

I tried Papido's menu and yes I can modify and save it. However, what he did is make all of the content thumbnails really small and move them off of the visible surface. At least for me, I can't click on the text (even in PowerDIrector preview) and have it jump to content.

And a rendered DVD failed in the player again. I think there must be something basic in the menus that the LG player doesn't like, although it plays commercial DVD and Blu-rays fine.

The support staff asked for crash dumps on the machine and I have sent them in. Will update everyone once they figure out what is going on.

Thanks to everyone who is working to solve this.

Update on status .... it kept bothering me that most other people don't have a problem. So I went back into KISS 14 and tried several different things. I clicked in every menu with no difference.

Then I think I moved the thumbnail slider bar to the left before saving. This time .... it SAVED !!!

John, if you've got time, it might be informative to see if you can modify KISS 14 now also, by just moving the thumbnail slider fully to the left.

The modified KISS 14 works OK in preview mode on the PC so I rendered and burned a disk. The disk still crashes the LG player if I click to play. If I let it timeout to play, it starts over 10 minutes into the video and the 'Play' button is shadowed on the screen.

My wife is going to take the DVD to our daughters and a friends tomorrow to see if it plays properly or differently on their players. Just trying to eliminate all variables and understand what is happening here.

Meanwhile, I am trying a different experiment to see if the sound track I had clipped out of another song might be the problem. Also change the selection indicator to an arrow instead of highlighting text in a different color.

I'm just started the rendering, so iIt will probably be tomorrow before I can check it out.

Once I get my DVD working, I'll return to the KISS 14 or another KISS menu to see if I can get it to crash again.

Hi Tiberius Nero,
I gave it a try, by moving the slider all the way to the left and it didn't work. Then I tried something else. I brought up KISS 14 in Modify mode and made absolutely no changes at all and clicked "Save As" > entered a name > clicked "OK" and it crashed. Brought up PD12 and tried again and it crashed. Tried again and it crashed and on the 4th try, it saved. Now I have a template in my saved name and I can now do anything with it and save it and it works great.

Why did it save after the 4th try???? Who knows!

I don't know why CL can't just give the user the option to remove thumbnails.

Good day!

That was what I was worried about ... that the last action wasn't the cause of the save working but just a random event.

My wife took the burned DVD to my daughter's house and it totally crashed her DVD player too. Her power cords are all hidden in the back of the media center so she was NOT happy about having to pull out equipment, trace the wire and unplug to get the DVD to work again.

DVD works great on the PC player but totally incapacitates a stand-alone player!!! I'm amazed that a 'bad menu' can crash DVD players that hard!

John - many people have been requesting this for a long, long time!

Agreed - it's a very perplexing problem. As I reported above, the KISS 14 menu worked on 3 DVD players and a BR player here, with no problems.

They're the worst kind of glitches to try to resolve - where we get inconsistent results.

I'm reliably informed that the R&D team at CL is investigating the problem using the custom menus listed in this thread. Hopefully, we'll be able to stop guessing soon.

Cheers - Tony

Here we go again! Now I've run into the next problem. Can't open the "Produce" page when I'm using the "K.I.S.S. 14" menu, even after I've modified it.
I'm gonna start a new thread on this, as this is a different issue now.
I'm gonna call the thread "PC crash with K.I.S.S. 14 .dzm template"

John -

Though I completely understand your frustration - and I'm a bit Grrr myself trying to isolate a possible cause - I cannot (again) replicate a crash just by going to Produce after modifying and/or applying a KISS 14 menu.

Guys,

Some good new information. I took the DVD that crashes the players and ran it through a utility called VobBlanker (circa 2005).

It reported the following:
VTS_01 ... menu does not exist
(then somehow recovered and found the menu)
then
VTS 01 VTSM_C_ADT did not exist
VTS 01 VTSM_VOBU_ADMAP did not exist

Then you click on "Process", it rebuilds tables, wrote out a new set of files and my DVD works !!!

I don't know what those messages mean, but hopefully someone familiar with DVD PGC chains and codes does and can fix the problem.

Meanwhile, I think I have a work around.

That's interesting & equally confusing.

VobBlanker didn't recognise the menu - then it did.

Guys - even though I've used those menus on many hundreds of discs, distributed far and wide with no complaint, & even though these recent reports are the first I've heard that the "KISS" menus have (apparently) caused various issues, and even though I can't get any of the menus to even look like they're going to fail in the ways described above... I've deleted them all from DirectorZone. My intention was only to share menus - not grief!

Hopefully, we might receive some clarification on the issues soon.

Cheers - Tony
