Using a mono source file, the simplest thing to do is import it into ADR & Produce it as a stereo file. The right track is automatically populated.

Manually duplicating the track, can cause level issues (depending on the sound). It may result in distortion.

Here's an example. First the original mono clip was simply produced as a stereo clip. In the bottom example the mono clip was duplicated in the right track & produced as stereo. The sound is distinctly different - see the waveform.



"Panning" is shifting the balance between left & right channels. It's probably not necessary in your case.

Dumb question... how do I produce it as a stereo clip?
Do I do all the modifications on the one channel I want and then "producing as a stereo clip" is the last step?

edit: I just produced it as a stereo .wav and imported that file, but it is only showing as the one channel as well.

So you:
1. Imported the mono audio clip
2. Applied adjustments as needed
3. Produced as a stereo WAV file

and you were left with a (produced) mono file???

If the original clip is not too large, perhaps you could add it here as an attachment. I, and other members, can test & verify.

Here, using various mono source clips, and following that procedure, the produced file is stereo.

I'm confused.

I've done 2 recordings, one with mono and one with stereo set on the preamp (Juicedlink). Actually, 3, the third in mono but with "pad" on, which should record a lower signal to the right side, is my understanding.

Recording in stereo results in left channel only? This would be right, leaving the other channel open for a second mic?

Recording in mono with pad off, results in sound being evenly recorded to both channels? I was under the impression that mono only recorded to the left channel. Hence confusion.

Should mono only record to one channel, or both? When I import into AD, at the bottom where it lists Audio Codec is says Stereo for all my files (don't know if this is relevant).

How does one learn all this stuff besides with lots of trial and error (and frustration)?

Edit: Just tried to produce a mono file to stereo and can confirm it still only has the left channel. In this case, It was mono with a lower signal recorded in the right channel. I "silenced" this channel in AD, then produced in stereo. Resulting wav file only has left channel sound.

Cloud9 - part of the problem is PIX isn't listening to what you're saying. He keeps changing the problem by saying you're importing a MONO file. You clearly stated you had 2 channel (stereo) with sound only on one. I have the same issue. Roxio has a feature in Sound Editor where you right click on the sound clip, and then in channel control you can select "Left on both", "right on both", "left on right", "right on left", etc. Basically a means for easily handling this. I've recently been trying to convert over to Cyberlink, and looking for the same feature in AudioDirector, but unable to find it.

You are right. I've probably misinterpreted what Cloud9 originally posted. My apologies.

Cloud9 - when you import your original audio clip into ADR, does the waveform look like 1 or 2 below? Are you able to attach the audio sample here?

Unfortunately, ADR doesn't have such a facility but it would certainly make life easier! Adding your idea to the suggestion box will get the attention it deserves.
