First and foremost, i did a check for power director 11 and couldn't find anything. I will say i'm not the most tech savvy, so if i've missed it i apologize, please redirect me. Also, i set a message to tech support, but also am posting here just to cover all bases. Here is what i sent.

Hello,

I'm having trouble importing wmv's to my power director 11. I'm getting "an error occurred while opening this file in the media library. It may be because the file is broken, an unsupported format, protected video content, or for another reason. Try contacting your video provider for another format." My school uses wmv because it's universal and easier to handle. I know power director can produce it as wmv. But when I uploaded the wmv it wouldn't load. the original was an avi, but when it converted to wmv i couldn't upload to edit it. when i first installed it it said the same thing for the "tram.wmv" file it uploaded but i thought nothing of it then. but not i see that my copy has never been able to upload the wmv files. please help me as i need to be able to upload wmv's for school.

thanks to anyone who can assist and i apologize for any inconvenience or duplicate posts.

You need to go back to the original AVI file that was converted. Can you play that AVI? There may be something wrong in the AVI.

Find a different file converter, something when wrong in the first conversion. Or the original was bad.

You are correct that WMV is pretty common and most all Windows computers can play them. But if the file is broken, nothing will play them.

thank you for your reply. power director was what converted it. i uploaded the avi to power director, edited it for the school, produced it as a wmv. it played. uploaded the same file that was produced and it won't upload. then i realized NO wmv's upload to my power director. hope this clarifies.

Hi janus -

Sounds like something is missing.

What OS is your PC? If it's XP (64-bit), this may help... http://www.cyberlink.com/support/product-faq-content.do?id=12824&prodId=4&prodVerId=930

I was just about to mention you, Papido, it's a very unusual problem, although it's possible it's 2 different errors manifesting itself in a similar fashion. HP Envy Phoenix/4thGen i7-4770(4@3.4GHz~turbo>3.9)

Does your Windows 8 have Windows Media Player?

Can you play a WMV video in Windows not Powerdirector?

sorry for not clarifying. I can play wmvs fine on windows media player. I can produce wmvs that work on windows media player. I can't however import and wmvs including any power director creates. so it can shoot them o but it won't receive them.

Can you attach a sample WMV that does not play. Or one you created in Powerdirector that does not work.

Keep it short, 5 to 10 seconds is long enough.

To attach a file in the foum, use the PostReply Button not the Quick Reply. Blue Attachments button below the text box.

that's the thing, they ALL play on windows media player. they WILL NOT import to power director. I can import any other file, convert it to wmv, produce it and it WILL play, but i WILL NOT be able to import it or any other wmv. the problem isn't playing them. it's importing them. any wmv.

Which is why I want one of those files that do not work so it can be tested by members on their powerdirector.

If you attach a sample, we can check it out.

okay. I'll have to do it when I get home. by "does not work" I'm guessing you mean doesn't import? I just want to be clear because technically all wmvs play.

Yes, does not import since that is your problem.

We need a starting point to figure out what is the cause of your problem and how we may solve it.

Do you get any error messages, if so do a screen shot and attach that also.

Not much help, but an observation that your file loaded in PD successfully. Video appears to be stretched.
After making an eyeball aspect adjustment I produced a smaller WMV file. It's attached, for further testing.

the fact it loads for you tells me it HAS to be an OS problem, or i'm missing some kind of file which is what i suspected. i'm running on windows 8 and have encountered a few problems elsewhere i've had to fix. thanks for checking though.

W8 here, so it's not the O/S at fault. Wish I had more insight for you...but all will be clear eventually. ^_^
