And then comes what I want to do:
I want to split the long video whenever I am talking. So basically that I have split segments of "explaining time" and the rest where I don't explain stuff because it's usually waiting for the computer to boot or load something. These sections (where I don't talk) I then want to speed up (like 10x to 20x) so that the viewer can see the whole process but when for example something installs for five minutes it just "warps" through that section.
But in order to do this I need to add my commentary track to the video before splitting it and applying the speedup function. However if I do this, PowerTools is unavailable and I can't access the speedup function.
PS: In the timeline a video with a replaced audio track does look different compared to an imported one.
Another way, that works, is replacing the audio, then splitting, then removing the audio for the split segments that should warp and then I can apply power tools. It's a few more steps but should work well.
I see no problem with what you want to do.
However, I strongly suspect you do not yet know what all PD11 can do.
Try this:
1. Import your Video. (the over hour long video). Drag to Track 1.
1A. Right Click > Mute Track/Clip
2. Record your Voice over in PD11 (I assume you are doing that already).
If you have a recording already, Import the recording and put on a separate Audio track.
3. After you have your Voice Over done, Save As your project file (for safety).
4. Select one clip, Press Ctrl+A (Select all) Right Click > Group Objects. Click in a clear area of the track to deselect.
5. Play the video (Do step 6 while playing)
6. Put splits where needed for the speed up sections. (Split at beginning and End of section).
7. After you have found all of your sections Right Click Ungroup Objects. Click anywhere in track to deselect.
8. Select the Audio sections that do not have talking (the Speed up video is above) Delete > Remove and leave Gap.
Do this for each audio section you want to remove.
9. Select a Video section for Speed up > PowerTools > Set speed.
10. Repeat for each speed up section.
11. Save AS PDS file
12. Produce the final video.
It is harder to describe that it is to do it. once you get the method and steps, it is really very easy.
