Ok this has me scratching my head. It's something really simple but I might be doing it wrong or there is another way.

This is what I am doing.

1. I import a video clip and drag it to the first track.
2. I right click on the video on the timeline and select > Unlink Video and Audio
3. I import an audio file and drag it onto the Audio track (which is now unlinked)
4. PD asks me if I want to replace it and I say yes.
5. I right click and select > Link Video and Audio

However this new Video clip doesn't have the Power Tools anymore!

How can I replace the Audio in a video clip and still use PowerTools?

I would guess that if you put the new audio file on a separate track your power tools will re-appear.

Either remove the audio track linked to the video or just right click and Mute.

When the video is produced, the new audio and video will be combined into one file.

1. Import your video
2. drag to Track 1
3. Import your new audio file.
4 Drag it to any other audio track (It can be the audio part of Track 2 or the Music track).
5 Right click on the Video in Track 1 > Mute
6. Check your PowerTools.

Yes this would work.

However, and I guess I should have explained why I am doing this, I need the audio replaced in the video clip for a reason.

So this is what I am doing. I record long tutorials on the computer. Like installing software or something like that. The capture is from an old computer so I use S-Video.

The clip can be quite long like an hour or so.

Then I import it to PD11.

I then use the function to record commentary through a microphone attached to the computer. It's quite neat. The video plays and I talk whenever there is something to talk about, muting the microphone slider whenever there is nothing to talk about.

And then comes what I want to do:

I want to split the long video whenever I am talking. So basically that I have split segments of "explaining time" and the rest where I don't explain stuff because it's usually waiting for the computer to boot or load something. These sections (where I don't talk) I then want to speed up (like 10x to 20x) so that the viewer can see the whole process but when for example something installs for five minutes it just "warps" through that section.

But in order to do this I need to add my commentary track to the video before splitting it and applying the speedup function. However if I do this, PowerTools is unavailable and I can't access the speedup function.

PS: In the timeline a video with a replaced audio track does look different compared to an imported one.

Another way, that works, is replacing the audio, then splitting, then removing the audio for the split segments that should warp and then I can apply power tools. It's a few more steps but should work well.

I see no problem with what you want to do.

However, I strongly suspect you do not yet know what all PD11 can do.

Try this:
1. Import your Video. (the over hour long video). Drag to Track 1.
1A. Right Click > Mute Track/Clip
2. Record your Voice over in PD11 (I assume you are doing that already).
If you have a recording already, Import the recording and put on a separate Audio track.
3. After you have your Voice Over done, Save As your project file (for safety).
4. Select one clip, Press Ctrl+A (Select all) Right Click > Group Objects. Click in a clear area of the track to deselect.
5. Play the video (Do step 6 while playing)
6. Put splits where needed for the speed up sections. (Split at beginning and End of section).
7. After you have found all of your sections Right Click Ungroup Objects. Click anywhere in track to deselect.
8. Select the Audio sections that do not have talking (the Speed up video is above) Delete > Remove and leave Gap.
Do this for each audio section you want to remove.
9. Select a Video section for Speed up > PowerTools > Set speed.
10. Repeat for each speed up section.
11. Save AS PDS file
12. Produce the final video.

It is harder to describe that it is to do it. once you get the method and steps, it is really very easy.

Yes that works

And you are right, I am new to Video Editing in general. I looked at all the trial versions of Premiere and Vegas, but PD felt most natural to me.

The Voice Over feature is fantastic. Yes I use the built in function for this and it is such a powerful tool, especially for the videos I make. I used to use Movie Maker and, well, there is not much you can do with it.

I have gotten my head around the concept of key frames as well. Quite nifty to say the least. But yea, there is so much to learn and often it's like the chicken or the egg. Does the vision of what you want to do make you look for a how to or does learning about a feature make you find a section to implement it

Great!

Good to hear of success.

There are many, many new things in Powerdirector 11.
Most are very good.

The Voice Over functions has been around about as long as I can remember. It is a great feature.

The Voice Over function in Powerdirector 11 is Improved.
Now when you start the Voice record, the video starts playing at the same time.

In older versions of Powerdirector you had to start the voice record, then start the play on the preview.

You always got a short period of recording in the voice track before you could get the video playing.

Chicken or Egg, true. I think the Chicken came first, without the Chicken, who would lay the Egg?

The Idea comes first. Then you figure out how to do your Idea.

I just discovered this TOO!

If I cannot crop and mask after replacing the audio track with synched hi def audio recorded with a pro audio program I am uninstalling this product and calling my credit card to challenge the purchase.
