how to restore function buttons above timeline in Edit

I have been using PD10Ultra (10.0.0.1129b) with no problem on my Win 7, 64-bit, i7 930. Today I have suddenly lost the function buttons(trim, multitrim,fix/enhance,etc)that were above my timeline view in Edit mode. At same time I no longer have the centre 'target' point in the preview window. I can play my project in either clip or movie mode but I can't access any of the edit functions anymore even by right-clicking. I restarted computer still nothing.

I have no idea if I clicked something by mistake & have read the UltraGuide & the Tutorial Book but am unable to see how to get these buttons back. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

vidgal

Hi vidgal -

Did the buttons just "disappear" & the space became grey? If so, just jiggle your cursor over the space & they should reappear. This happens sometimes, & not just to you!

The other thing is that - which buttons are available depends on what you have selected in the timeline.

Cheers - Tony

Hi Vigdal,

Have you opened/sent any of your video clip's audio, to WaveEditor (on purpose, or by mistake)?
If so, just right click on a clip that no longer displays the editing buttons, choose Unlink Audio And Video from the menu, and then click on a blank space in your timelines. Your missing buttons should now return when you highlight the clip.

Wow, Cranston, that worked but I can't figure out why. I had done the audio in Wave Editor & then brought it back & continued to work on the project for a good while using the buttons just fine til suddenly they disappeared. Now thanks to your solution they are back,

So no I need to know: do I have to leave them unlinked now or when do I link them again?

Thanks, also to Tony for answering & trying to help. BTW, I have found the PDToots tutorials very helpful & also the ones I found on this site.

Hi vidgal,

I don’t think it’s possible to re-link audio that’s been modified and saved with WaveEditor. But there’s not any crucial “need” (in my estimation), to have the Audio linked to the Video if it’s been unlinked.
Though you could highlight both, and the choose Group Objects in the right click menu. That’s kind of the same as having them linked.
But if you properly utilize the Link/Un-Link All Tracks option in Preferences (Alt+C > Editing > Link All Tracks), as well as the Lock Track option (Padlock icon to the left of each timeline track), the un-linked audio will behave just like all the rest of your tracks that are spread across your various timelines, and sync should remain fine. Or at least I have not found unlinked audio to be an issue.

As far as why this missing buttons phenomena happens. One reason may be because, when you save the audio that you've sent to WaveEditor, it now returns the audio in the WAV format, replacing the original audio with the WAV file. So perhaps that is factor.
But I’ll let some of our more astute members chime in on that. I really don’t know. I just had the same thing happen, and during the course of poking around, discovered that if I Unlinked the audio, the editing buttons reappeared. So now I am in the habit of unlinking audio before I open and modify it in WaveEditor.

Thanks, Cranston. I wasn't sure if the new audio WAV would stay in sync if I left it unlinked, so I finished my edits then chose the Link audio option again to check it before producing. I did already have those options you mentioned checked in my Prefs so maybe that was what kept it in sync. Anyhow, next time I will know what to do in advance!

I appreciate your help. Have a good day!
