Importing iTunes Music

I just purchased PowerDirector 10 today (May 12) so am new to this software (but have used video editing software before). I'm already having issues (very likely "user error"!)...I can't import music from my iTunes library (file format .m4a...which appears to be supported in all the documentation I've read about PD 10). When I try to import this type of media into the PowerDirector Media Room I get the following error message:

"An error occured while opening this media file in the media library. It may be because the file is broken, an unsupported format, protected video content or for another reason. Contact your video provider for a different video format."

Is this typical? Thanks for any help/guidance anyone can provide to this "newbie"!!!

Welcome to the volunteer forum

I believe Tony's method only works for music you have imported into iTunes via a CD.

Basically Apple spends millions every year copyrighting and protecting their music files (even though you bought them) and PD cannot import these - hence your error message.

There are programs out there that claim they 'convert' the Apple codec but be aware.

If you have a Mac you can import your iTune music into a photo slideshow in iPhoto and Export using the MOV file extension.

You can then import this MOV file into PowerDirector and right click in media library and Extract Audio as a WAV file.

If you don't have a Mac you may want to consider Youtube for the song and a Youtube Downloader (Google it), these downloaders can convert the video file to MP3's etc.

Folks, thnx for the responses. I'm not completely surprised taht there might be some restrictions on iTuens songs (tho since I've bought them I thought I might have greater access to them).

Oh well...I'll just dump music from my CD's into my PC and use that music.

Tony, a BIG tahnk you. Clicking through the thread you sent I found the below post of yours a while back. It worked like a charm (tho it seems I have to follow the below for EACH song I want to import into PD). But it does work.

I'll throw a bit in too...

Cranston & Jaime are on the money. I use iTines as my main music library. Here's what I do and it's never resulted in any such problem:

1. In iTunes, go to Edit > Preferences > General > click on Import Settings > Select MP3 encoder or WAV encoder. Click OK a couple of times.
2. Now music that's in your library may already be in a variety of formats. Select the track you want to use.
3. Right click on it & select "Create MP3 version" (or WAV).
4. Drag the converted file to the desktop (or wherever you want). It copies the file. iTunes does what other conversion software does (as long as your preferences are set as described above).
5. In PD, import the converted file.
